George Soule: Mayflower Passenger Documentary
Mayflower Pilgrim George Soule is the subject of this documentary. It covers the life of Mayflower passenger and Plymouth colonist George Soule; the Edward Winslow household to which he belonged; as well as his later wife Mary Buckett. Researchers Caleb Johnson, Sue Allan and Simon Neal discuss the genealogical and DNA research that has gone into trying to puzzle out his origins and parentage.

Thank You, as George Soule was my ancestors as are many too. Add, I can boast of more, Francis Scott Key & Supreme Court Justice, Brooke Tanney & Rev. Robert Brooke and all their family as a Brooke designed the first iron ship in the Civil war & a Shaw of Iran, somehow. My Brooke family has not spelled the name the same since we left England for more...the inventor of the American Fox hound, google it as it includes George Washington & General La Fette too, by the American Kennel Association. Big thanks, as a joy to know Our heritage and shared it well like my friends in TV & Movies.

As a Native American, I wish we had the power to turn these people away. The same way most Americans feel about immigrants today who want to come to this country to start a new peaceful life for their families, to have freedom of religion, to raise their kids so they can go to school and escape the violence. It makes me angry they want to close the gates to these immigrants who want what your ancestors came to this country for. Yes, they need to do it the legal way but they should have as much a chance as your ancestors did. The Native Americans didn’t have a choice while all their land was taken from them, and millions were killed just to steal and remove them from their lands, millions killed with their diseases they brought to this country, degraded and treated like animals. So be proud of your ancestors if that’s what you feel but all Indigenous Americans are not !! It’s a sad legacy for us and our children, but we are a proud people and our ancestors survived and we still exist today.

You have to work backwards, one generation at a time using birth and death records. Starting with your own parents, then grandparents. Or in your case your mother's line.

Back in 2012, I single-handedly went down the same YDNA research path to establish my own Mayflower descendance from Edward Fuller (to me an 11th great-grandfather). I found a correctly descended male Fuller living in Nevada (with whom I share my 5th great-grandfather Fuller) who agreed to do the YDNA test and in early 2013 the test results were a positive match to all other tested Fuller males who have complete paper trails pointing to Edward Fuller. This research took me exactly one year to accomplish. There were MANY dead-ends, disappointments and a lot of nail-biting along the way, but in the end, it was a success and what a journey it was.

Did the researchers also check families with their names spelled "Sowell"? Also, growing up in New Orleans, my brother had a friend with the last name Soule, but their ancestry was FRENCH, and the accent was on the E, pronounced "Sulay". Is it possible that George Soule was French Huguenot?

I was just doing some research on my Soule family connection. I found at least 5 Soule family members served during the Civil War in the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment. One was 15 when he joined.

I'd look for George Soule ancestors under the name Soulice. There is an early Huguenot man by the name of Jean Soulice on the Huguenot Society of the US. The Huguenot connection to the Mayflower makes it a possiblity these two were connected. And the I haplogroup may be bc it's French.

My 8th great grandfather James Chilton died on the Mayflower while it was anchored off the tip of Cape Cod shortly after signing the Compact and his wife died weeks later. There is a statue of their daughter Mary in Plymouth (first European woman to set foot in the New World), and she married John Winslow, Edward's brother. I am descended through their other daughter Isabella who came over from Leiden with her husband Roger Chandler about ten years later. The father of Edward Winslow (Edward Winslow Sr.) is my 10th great-grandfather. I'm descended through the brother, Kenelm (so Sir Isaac Newton is my 3rd cousin through his wife, my 9th great-grandmother Eleanor Newton). My 1st cousin 9x removed, John Haskell, married Patience Soule, daughter of George Soule and moved from Salem (the part that is now Beverly) to Middleborough in Plymouth Colony. George had specifically willed property to Patience with a warning to her brother to not bother her or John. When John's brother Mark was called for jury duty in the Salem witch trials he skipped town and moved to Rochester near Middleborough (better than being accused of witchcraft for not believing in witches and thinking the trials were nonsense). He became known as "Witchcraft" Mark. Another bit of family trivia: Mark's wife was Mary Goodale Smith and her uncle Jacob Goodale had been beaten to death by Giles Corey in 1675 (Jacob was an indentured servant and Corey was only fined for using excessive force when he beat him. People felt that he had gotten away with murder and that didn't help him in the witch trials later). Puritan family history sure is fun. John and Elizabeth Proctor are my 8th great-grandparents (through their son Samuel who was seven when they were convicted of witchcraft). Anne Marbury Hutchenson is my 11th great-grandmother. She was exiled to Rhode Island for causing the Antinomian controversy in Massachusetts Bay Colony. Boy! Those Puritans sure were all about freedom, weren't they? Did I mention that my 8th great-granduncle Mark Haskell (a different Mark) was fined five shillings for wearing broad lace by the Salem court in 1653?
