Isabel WIlkerson — The Warmth of Other Suns
Finally, grudgingly, a majority of Americans are beginning to address their most profound and destructive failures as a nation and as a people: slavery and genocide.
After 15 years of research and writing, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Isabel Wilkerson published "The Warmth of Other Suns". In it, Ms. Wilkerson brings to life the epic Black migration from the Jim Crow South. They left with the hope of escaping the racism and terror of the former Confederacy.
Unfortunately, racism was not confined to Dixie, nor did it end with Jim Crow.
We recorded this conversation with Ms. Wilkerson in September of 2010. In the intervening years, the latent racism in America has come out of the closet, encouraged and sustained by Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
If America is ever to meet its stated commitment to “liberty and justice for ALL”, that JUSTICE must be applied equally to every person. People are not born racist; they learn it. That learning is based on false narratives and assumptions.
The stories Ms. Wilkerson has crafted about the Great Migration, the attempt by millions of Black people to escape the horrors of Jim Crow in the South and its northern and western equivalents, are a powerful antidote to the ignorance, prejudice and destructiveness of racism. She tells us about it with grace and humor.

“It’s sort of become cliché to say that laughter is important in life, but I think it is. A lot of jokes come out of the military the harrowing and the funny have to get mixed. Some of the funniest, biggest laughs you'll have is at a wake afterward a funeral or the shiva. There's a lot of fond laughter or sometimes naughty laughter and it’s a great relief to people to be able to do that."

“A few years ago it occurred to me that if I would listen to another person in life now, I'm not talking about on the stage, just in life that I would listen to another person as though they were possibly my salvation, not that I had to wait until they were done so I could say this great thing I had to say, but really let them land on me and change me unless I were willing to let them change me...

I don't expect to go on after this, so I want to make sure that on this side of eternity I get a feeling of pleasure in it. What could be better than life? I can't imagine anything better than life.

My feeling is that anyone is a believer. Belief is part of us, as human are dominated by imagination. Belief must be fed, and religion might be a food, as science may be one other. Rationality remains an everyday fight against our deep nature. Many can hardly accept this... Finite game is a moment of infinite game. Religion processes rituals to establish a permanent interaction. Interactions are an infinite game. War is a finite game, as any other competition is. War is a moment of an infinite game. Religion may become politic, and conflicy might rise. Belief might be fed with anything, and if politic becomes a religion, then society becomes totalitarian

Susan Faludi is a highly intelligent woman, and by her manners in interviews and media in general she seems like the best type of friend anyone could have. I agree with alot of things she says and some things not but I still believe that I could sit for hours with her discussing different topics over a cup of coffee. She has got a very attractive intellect.

I feel so bad for her, she worked so hard for her children to have normal life, but her daughter when back to that hell. From what I read she never tried to be in the world, and she wanted to be back with her abusive father because she was his golden child? She needs help, she needs therapy, and I hope one day she see that her mom was right.

I've spent weeks now reading about the FDLS and watching the clips on You Tube and I have to say I simply don't understand! Girls are used as bribes, pretty much - you scratch my back and I'll give you the prettiest of the bunch to 'marry'! Their prophet is in prison for life - and behaving, if I may say so, in the most abominable way. Now he tells the 'faithful' that they can no longer eat white flour, corn, sugar ... I mean what's all THAT about? What's more although they live together in Utah, they apparently hate each other like poison. They spy on each other, tell tales and generally dog each other's lives with misery ... and they claim they're living as their religion demands? I tell you what if there IS a God, then not for a moment do I believe he's the one Muslims are so bloody frightened of, nor the one Polygamists seem so shit scared of offending ... and who permits men in their fifties to despoil pre-teen girls! Maybe if there are SO MANY Gods all fighting it out to be the TRUE God, then we should cut our losses and manage for ourselves!

I say a documentary on african bushman, in which the father tells the sun to do a dance for the gods prior to getting ants from an ant bed. When the hunt for ants was unsuccessful, the father said the son did not do the dance right. Maybe the father was not sincere with the son, otherwise it seems like superstition to me. I am not trying to discredit the author above, in fact I appreciate her book titled the hidden life of dogs, I am thinking that the bushman of today may have superstitions that bushman of the past did not have. I don't know much about E. M. Thomas, but I am impressed appreciate her work.

The former left an abusive Mormon cult, and the latter left an abusive "Christian" homeschooling Quiverfull cult. I put that in quotes because I'm a Christian and this group often defies most Christian values.

I used to be Republican for many years, from the 60's until the mid 90's, but not anymore. I changed parties in the mid 90's. I do not recognize today's "Rethuglican" party! John pretty much sums up why. It's a party of kooks! I've seen interviews with some of the older Republicans like Bob Dole, Tom Keane Sr and Pat Buchanan and they're not happy with the modern Neo Conservatives and Republicans. Even Newt Gingrich said they're beholden to elitist interest and nothing but an opposition party!
