Hello!
For the last decade+, I've been a private college consultant based in California. My experiences range from elementary/boarding schools to graduate school programs, so I'm confident advising the entire gamut of competitive educational applications. Over the last several years, I've focused on competitive undergraduate admissions, transfers, and graduate programs (Medical, Law, MBA).
My hope is to share the knowledge and experience I've accrued and present them in a way that meets students eye-to-eye. That's why I'll strive to create content that is first and foremost made for students. I think the most powerful thing a parent or guardian can encourage in their child is self-agency; so, to that end, I'll be making content that can be an easy tool for students to pick up.
As for why I'm doing this? I love teaching, educating, coaching, and I enjoy the learning process I'm going through to expand my reach!

So we should talk about only major-related things? What if I wrote something unrelated?
This was incredibly helpful. I particularly appreciate how you didn't just tell us to research - you gave us advice on exactly *how* to research. Thank you so much!
Appreciate the feedback. I'll keep your comment in mind as I get to updating the guides in the future!
im talking about the educational barrier with having severe 'diagnosed' ADHD but dealing with it without taking pills and instead striving n using it to my advantage . later talking about giving a talk in ,y school about adhd awareness n all that . what do you think
THANK YOU!, most insightful piq video
This is so good! Have a question - can I start with why I liked engineering as a child but an incident (an internship) changed all that, and my focus shifted to Economics? The question is whether to state that the interest shifted from one to the other.
I don't think so; unless you can pull off the summary and transition in 2-3 sentences, it's better you just go straight to the highest IQ experience of Econ that you're engaging today, and how that leads you to wanting to learn the next set of tools and specialized knowledge in economics to become capable of pursuing more advanced interests. Also, saying "ever since I was a child, I liked engineering" is very generic. Even if you're using it to pivot, it just seems like an unnecessary use of word count. Why not just start with the high IQ econ experiences and then use the remaining space to talk about about your endeavors today and your future aspirations for the subject?
If I have bad grades for semester due to unforeseen circumstances, wouldn't it be better to just talk about them in my additional comments rather than talking about them in a PIQ?
What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time
Bro when is This year's guide gonna come?
I have watched so many PIQ videos, but this PIQ video is undoubtedly the most insightful ones out there. Thank you!
Is this GPA only counting courses from summer after 9th to summer before 12th?
Heyy, I have a potential topic for this prompt of trigonometry (I'm going for an engineering major), but I'm afraid I don't have enough impressive experiences/actions. I delved into trig in middle and high school (I saw triangles in like everything).. but then I really didn't take a lot of opportunities to do research or anything. Best I have is teaching myself math (homeschool student) and creating things out of junk in my backyard (stilts, foldable desk, bucket armed with a bow and arrow.. random stuff but triangles! idk). So should I just stay away from this prompt since I don't have impressive enough ingredients?
If you're applying to more than the UC's, you're likely going to run into Why Major prompts, in which case Prompt #6 is great for that. Perhaps you can use your personal background in the backyard as a personal anecdote of how you grew up using math in your own unique/personal way, and then talk more about how that built into your major interests, because basically everything synergizes with math. You can then transition to higher IQ content that reflects your intellectual and academic goals related to math and your major.

Pretty sure one of Questbridge's prompts is the new Harvard prompt. However you get 400 words on Questbridge vs 150.

College Admissions Balance Changes 🤯🤯
It's a good day for CounselorJay uploads🤤 gotta turn up your mic tho🤔
Thanks, will adjust!
I had a position where I led young students by example and mentored them and built them up and all that good leaderstuff, but I'm worried bc I didn't really have a lot of hard decisions to make, there weren't a lot of downsides/consequences, and my role really wasn't being jeopardized-- is this a problem for this prompt?? thanks!
If your insights about coaching/mentoring as a leader are unique and interesting, then you can focus more on the positive value aspects of your leadership while not shining light on the weak areas of your leadership that you see. I've seen students successfully write a compelling leadership essay with your given constraints. Just really comes down to avoiding writing generically.
Great video, would be nice to know if there is a way to get these stats but for graduate school admissions?
I am manifesting harvard
🔥 🔥🔥
Hi jay i am from saudi arabia how i can contact with you ?
Can you put non-academic awards in the honors section? Like a character leadership award given by faculty for running a club?
You can, but it wouldn't be an optimal choice to put in there. This leads to a question of whether you should aim to saturate all 5 slots (like some do with the President's Volunteer Service Award) or respect the "Academic" element. In general, I tend to see students just fill up the slots with anything that could be State, National, or International in recognition, even though it may not be Academic in nature if they cannot saturate all 5 spots. In general, if you're struggling to fill any of the slots with an academic award, you're likely at most competitive for T1.5 schools. Let's say you're a T3-4 student... in this case, I would say just saturate the honors slot because the argument is that the perception/printout of the application will still have a visual impact when you highlight your character awards. But for T1.5+, I would say that the competition you're compared to will make your non-honors inserts potentially less valuable. Lots of variables here as you can see, but I hope this gives you some insight.
@@CounselorJay thank you for the detailed information!
Trin and Conncoll are definitely on 3, especially bc ranks are dynamic, and professors too, but prestige and cross-college resources are not
Hey, we should work together man. I run a college consulting company but I've been having trouble getting the clients to work with our program. I have about 50 mentors already working with me however and they span mostly from ivies but they are all willing to work for free to consult students. We also provide free essay revising
How can I connect with you??
Hey im a student for this upcoming cycle, how can I work with one of your mentors for free?
Hi, can I get mentored as well if that's possible?
I would love the free tutoring!
How may I connect?
COUNSELER JAY, MA BOYYYYYYYY!!!!

I got all As in all other grades except 10th grade and it was only because I was into dating … so i thought about writing it in the essay but i guess its a bad idea after watching your video 😂
Can u do prompt number 4 too pleaseee
Thank you so much. Best UC PIQ video i ever seen!!
Amazing breakdown!
Hello, I got waitlisted from WTP but did get into Stanford’s SPINWIP program. Would this be just as good?
Does this look good and give a boost on college admissions? I have a mediocre gpa.
Thank you to the out of state students, it has made public school much more in-accessible to CA residents (parent) that have been paying tax all their lives.
I got into AwesomeMath this year!!
My daughter with a 4.2 GPA got turned down for every UC University she applied to. She was applying in Business to get in to UCLA and Berkley for Business you need at least 4.5. Remember it isn’t just the campus it is the major as well.
if the student is balck or latino, it will be way easier to get in UC.
@@DanielDD4889 Incorrect. The only differentiation now allowed is family income. There are no race based criteria in California anymore.
@@matthewhuszarik4173Oh my god. There’s a huge advantage if you’re Hispanic or Black. Income shouldn’t matter neither. Every heard of DEI?
@@MrBUGS713 Income does matter. With income comes better primary and secondary schools. Better private tutors, SAT ACT coaching, ghost writers writing essays, never having to get a job, baby sit, or even do chores. The affluent’s children are professional students. Their parents manipulate every possible factor for an advantage. They have college admission coaches who are former admission officers who charge $10,000 and walk their childs through the college admissions process to maximize your advantage. The problem is if you are well off and don't cheat or game the system you are screwed, because the well off cheat at everything and not cheating puts you at a huge disadvantage. We are well off and live in Santa Barbara CA about as affluent an area as you get. I tell my daughter to do her own homework and she tells me nobody does their homework alone either they do it with their tutors or their parents spend hours doing it with them. We know less affluent children who got accepted with poorer grades, less difficult classes, and far less optimum extra curricular activities. My daughter it multilingual, she volunteers from 300-500 hours a year.
Hey Jay, not sure if you still monitor this video but have you done a more recent update, 2024? Thanks
can you be a leader without a team?
That's getting deep! haha. I would argue that the 350w limit makes it difficult to attempt a leadership essay that is unconventional to that degree. For practical reasons, I think it's better to go with a leadership experience that incorporates leading followers. Granted, if you think you have an idea or example that showcases this notion, I'll be glad to read it and give my thoughts on it.
How does it affect being national merit finalist
So materially, it's considered a very solid Top 5 Academic Honor/Distinction on the Commonapp. So that's one extra ticked box for a National award. Besides that, I'd argue there's a correlation (not necessarily causation) for NMSQT semi-finalists and finalists becoming very consistent T2 and higher accepted student profile.
The volume coming out of this TH-cam video is so low that despite maxing out my computer's sound, I'm struggling to hear the presenter.
Thanks for the feedback; I'll be ensuring the audio quality is consistent in the future!

Hey there, I appreciate this so much. Happy New Year and GL on your ventures!

How different would our approach supposed to be if we were applying as a trasnfer and not a first year? I'm trying to trasnfer to CAS and we have the same essays (plus a why transfer essay)
Not different at all!
