Through A Smaller Lens
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ก.ย. 2020
Viewing life through a smaller lens! Sharing the passion of scale modeling with others.
I started building scale models in 2012 after many years making Lego as a kid and wanting more detail than bricks could provide. I build a little bit of everything and I always have too many kits in some stage of completion.

Resin Water Scale Model Failure - 1/700th 688(i) ICEX Diorama
This ended up going anywhere but where I'd planned. But that's okay! I'm glad I practiced on something that only took a few hours and that I knew had the risk of failing as I have never tried to use 2 part epoxy resin to make water before. I thought I'd be okay with a 2 inch deep pour, but I clearly thought wrong.

A Simple Base For Your Scale Model - Meng's Pickup with ZU-23-2 in 1/35th Scale: "Qilo Edition"
มุมมอง 2.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I think making a base is a very important step in finishing your scale model and it really takes the presentation to the next level. It may look like a daunting task to make a base, but it's much easier than it may look to get your scale model looking like the piece of art it truly is. Even the simplest base for your scale model goes a long way and I highly recommend you try it out! As always, ...

Painting a Technical - Meng's Pickup with ZU-23-2 in 1/35th Scale: "Qilo Edition"
มุมมอง 3984 หลายเดือนก่อน
Yes, the pun is intended. Time to get some paint on this technical! The color isn't a perfect match, but I'm pleased with the color combination as I knew I wasn't going to be painting the ZU-23-2 the same bright orange beige as the ornament. Building A Christmas Ornament in 1/35th. Meng's Pickup with ZU-23-2: "Qilo Edition"
มุมมอง 1.1K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
Since picking up Qilo's Technical Christmas tree ornament, I've wanted to make it in 1/35th for quite some time. I finally had a free slot in the bench to get going on it and I figured it would be a great way to finally properly kick off my TH-cam channel. This has been one of my quicker builds of late and I'm thrilled with how it's turning out so far. I can't wait to get some paint on it, let'...
How to build your first scale model kit: picking a kit and assembly
มุมมอง 48910 หลายเดือนก่อน
So you want to start building scale models, huh? Let's talk about how how to pick your first kit, what tools you'll need to get started, and how to actually use those tools! This is the first part of my beginner's guide to building scale models, where I'll cover everything you need to know about what matters in your first kit, all the situations you may run into during assembly, and what makes ...
ХОРОШО ПОЛУЧИЛОСЬ )) но как по мне сильно блестит , она же ездит в пустыне , а там пыль песок , а так красиво )))
Really like the clear explanation and time spent on the foam. Don’t often see that.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I always want to be able to provide enough that others can try it too if they like what they saw, inspiration can be invaluable 😁
Hunt for Red Oktober! Dramatic scene. Thanks for sharing this though. We can all learn.
Lesson one you have to learn when working with resin: Resin setting is an exothermic reaction. Your datasheet is your best friend - you may need to learn some calorimetic math to understand the numbers.
Unfortunately there isn't a data sheet like that available for the resin I used. I've had no issues doing large pours with Smooth-On resins in the past, especially their fast setting stuff which gets very hot even when thin. Now only if they made an endothermic resin! haha
@@throughasmallerlens There should be data sheets available for any resin system you can buy. Sometimes you need to twist the manufacturer's arm a bit, but afaik they are required to have some.
My dude. You struck gold and you don't seem to realize it. It went from a fairly standard "ship in resin" build to something extremely dramatic and interesting, if maybe a a tad on the unrealistic side. Bob Ross would be proud of your mistake turned into a happy accident. I'd say push your contrast with the painting and redo this as if it was your intention when you feel the time is ripe.
Almost like a dolphin jumping out of the ocean, I like the idea!
Look at the bright side and see the possibilities. Into the holes you could stick some LEDs and then call this an art installation that was inspired by Dali and his melting time. 🤔🤷 and thank you for the reminder why I got several pieces here that rest well at the stage where I was supposed to pour resin over it and didn‘t have the guts to go through with this plan. 🙈🙈🙈
It's definitely abstract in its final form haha! My advice to you would be to do it in many layers, and if you're going to tint the resin, make sure you're calculated in your mixture of resin and paint so the color is the same at each layer - that's how I'll be doing it when I reattempt this.
Just as important to show what not to do 👌
Agreed! Hopefully someone won't make the same mistake now
well done laddie, no one learns from anything that went perfectly

Stellar job 🤙 a base is on my list to try, and now I have another excellent guide to refer to whenever I get over my procrastination lol
Thank you! Definitely give it a try, I think it really completes the model and sells the story of the weathering, even a simple base adds a lot😁
Great end result. Can't wait to see your next project. The Runescape music takes me back to my childhood
Thank you! I played many hours of RuneScape back in the day and I still play the OST every now and then, I think it suits stuff like this 😁
@@throughasmallerlens I sunk so many hours in I got to 99 runecrafting the OG way
youtube is wonderful when it works. my uncle lost his eye sight too early that i could learn these modelling/painting techniques from him. now i can sit at the elbow of any number of crafty uncles and watch the secrets of their hobby or trade. thank you for showing us all. 🙂
realy good tuorial - its giving me some motivation to restart my abandonded model (heller 1/24 tractor) -new to the hobby - was distracted by PITA airbrush - bits of sponge and brushes i can deal with !
That's great to hear! Airbrushing can definitely be tough to get the hang of at first. I struggled a lot with getting the mix of thinner and paint right at first and now I recommend using either pre-thinned lacquer paints like Mr. Paint (MRP) or pre-thinned acrylics like Vallejo Air to shortcut that.
Great video. Glad TH-cam suggested it to me. Subscribed and looking forward to watching your previous few.
Thank you! Hopefully not as long until the next one as this one was to the last😅
@@throughasmallerlens building models already takes a lot of time, throw in video editing too and it takes twice as long. I get it. When friends and family ask me they are shocked to hear it takes me about an hour of editing time for every minute of finalized video.
Thats my next project. Yours looks great 👍
Thank you! It’s an enjoyable kit from Meng without much fuss. I would definitely recommend getting the Voyager Model photo etch set for it, the added detail of the tailgate latches and the bedside tie-down points are really nice. Not to mention the addition of Toyota badging which isn’t standard in the kit.
Cool weathering effects. 👍
Thank you! 😁 It’s always the process that takes me the longest but I like being able to look at it for a few days after each major step before moving onto the next to make sure I’m happy with it
Great work, as usual, my man!
Thank you Jason!
Fantastic work!
Nice video, lovely build!
Thank you! Cheers!
love the voiceover
will you do 1/12 bikes?
I will! I have a 1/12th Tamiya Ducati 1199 Panigale and Ducati V4 in the stash that I'll get to, along with Meng's 1/9th scale BMW HP4 Race. We'll see when I get to them.
Honestly love tamiya primer always gives a good surface. Love these longer form videos
Thank you Brodie! I’m a big fan of the primer from both an adhesion and surface finish perspective. I used Vallejo’s Acrylic primer for a few years before making the switch to Tamiya’s because the Vallejo primer has such poor adhesion to the material underneath.
what is that apple pen ass intro LMAO
fantastic build!
Thank you! 😁

Let's go. The RS music takes me back
Came from tik tok , here for the builds 👍👍
This is an amazing video! You should build and do a review on the Tamyia me262 A2a
Maybe eventually! The 262 is something I’ve always wanted to build
