Unrelated to the video but about gouldian pairing. One of my parent male bird died during incubation period and unfortunately eggs weren't fertile so I removed them. That was the first clutch for the hen. My question is, can I introduce a new male to pair with hen? If yes, when can I introduce him? Can the hen still bond with new male for the rest of this breeding season?
Hi. Yes you can repair. They don't always take to the new partber straight away but it should work without a problem.

Great information Clyde as always, hope your well. Do have questions though? Are all black headed yellow tipped beak carrying 2 copies of the orange head gene to show the yellow tip? Also can the shade of the head be an indicator if the bird is 2 gene red & gene yellow or if it's only 2 gene yellow and 1 red? Thanks
How do you keep lizard out your bird room
Hi brilliant info…. What country are you in .. just curious .
Fabulous work Clyde 👏
Most people allege these birds are winter breeders but most of my chicks(I have 6m long outdoor aviary which came with the property....) fledged between February and end of April- seen quite a few dead chicks- isn't it perhaps unfair to these birds to breed them in winter outdoors and rather stick from January to April ? By the way I'm in Robertson western Cape and we are still consistently under 10 celcius every night
Hi Francious. To answer your question, a good few breeders do summer breeding. The reason for the time is as follows. The adult birds molt until the end of November early December. Very fes are dome molting by late October. The birds then need time to bulid up their reserves and come into condition. The seriius show guys then wait until after the main shows in Jan/Feb and then pair there birds. From this ppint it takes approximately two weeks before the first eggs are in the box. Putting us into late Feb esrly March. I now keep a show team (previous years chicks which I won't breed). So for me I can start towards the end of Dec if I wish. If I do then I'm done before the end of April as I onky breed two rounds. In terms of your questiins specifically the winter breeding 8s to mimic the natural breeding season in the wild. The birds start to breed when fresh seed becomes available which tends to be later in the summer. They therefore have maximum food availability in the height of the breeding season which makes chick raising easier and more successful. In captivity we have seed availabilty all year round so it is up to you. But the birds should not breed during the molt.
@@thehouseofgouldians ❤thanks so much - lot of food for thought- I removed all the nest boxes last week 5 October which is perhaps a little late but at least they are out now
I like the forms you use for the records .. Do you have PDF files or downloadable files we can also use?
So far I have 1st yr birds and she has laid 9 eggs, but showing very little interest in laying on the eggs so I've put them in with some society finches to see if they will foster the eggs
Hi Kevin. They only start to sit after they finish the clutch. So don't take them away too quickly.
Send me you email and I can email you. Thanks
Awesome video, very informative and definitely interesting for someone (like myself) who’s interested in possibly breeding finches. Thanks for the attention to detail, very useful.
Thanks Raul
What could be the illness if juvenile gouldian seems to most of the time tuck his head behind wing- and just sitting still quite tame- or do they do that with all illnesses
Unfortunately they do that when they ill in general. Will need more to go on. Thanks
Morning looking for a blue male
Hi good day
i am a new keeper of gouldians when is the best time for gouldians to breed
If you in the Southern Hemisphere our breeding season starts in Jan/Feb and runs through until about June / July. Northern Hemisphere would theoretically be the opposite but many control the lights with timers etc and protein. This allows them to breed later in the year and closer to the Southern Hemisphere timing.
Great video, very informative. Thanks !!
Thank you. I appreciate the feedback.
Hi, Can you please let me know why my lady Gouldian’s that are just receiving their colors are getting weaker/sick and dying?
The chicks are at there most vunerable at the stage. It is why our club refuses to sell or buy birds that have not completed this process. In terms of assisting them: stop all greens. If you feeding a commencial egg food reduce it to every three days and not daily. Provide them with warmth. Give them a good balanced vitamin like premolt 100 (a water based one). Place a perch low so that they can get off the ground. Also place watrr and food low incrase they are battling to fly. I hope these tips help.
Thank you very much for your help
Thanks a lot for explaining the genetic in a very that novice can have some idea. It would be more useful to share some more photos of actual birds. Im new to gouldian and ur channel is really an eye opener.
Hi. Thank you for the feedback. I really do appreciate it and will include more in the next episode.
Thank you Clyde for sharing the breeding tips on gouldian finches.
Tip #3 Peaked my interest, a lot of food for the brain to consider. I have found more birds reach the perch with 2nd/3rd Year Birds or at least one of the pair not a first year bird.
Thanks for the feedback. I hope that the informatiin helps you improve your own results.
very interesting and thought provoking. I have followed the diet convention and from 6 pairs, 1 pair raised. All the rest were clear eggs, as you can imagine I was perplexed, the birds had austerity, vitamins and perles morbide with eggfood. Your video gives me much to consider!
I hope that it can make the difference and you jave better success in the new season.
Great advice right there Clyde. Hope you are well my friend!
I am thanks Victor.
❤❤🇧🇩🇧🇩
Great video - as always😉👍
I noticed that chicks start to sound at day 3. Once I hear their cries, I count back the three days and write that as their hatch day. I won't touch nest boxes until they are at least 2 weeks old.
Great Emily. The less we inspect the better. Are you ringing your birds? Day 14 would be a bit big for ringing but brilliant in terms of the discussion.
@thehouseofgouldians yes, I have to band the babies before they leave the nest. That's why I go in there around that time. I have a community aviary and sometimes I have about 4 nests all ready to fledge at one time. If I don't Band I won't know whose baby is whose. I find that a community aviary of gouldians is very interesting to study. I make sure never to have more than two birds related at a time. I will keep two sister or two brothers, but that's to make sure that birds are not inbreeding. I find that only some hens will be monogamous while others will breed with the same two males for every clutch. Even though I have a community aviary I was able to coherse certain birds to pair with others and it has worked 90% of the time so far. All of my pairs were made by me, the last 10% are the ones that choose to have multiple partners, but they still raise nests with the original partners I gave them.
Very interesting method and something I'm sure others can benefit from in terms of how you ensure you do not have in breeding. I'm also interested in hearing more about your method for pairing in a colony setup. What part of the world are you from?
@@thehouseofgouldians USA
Thanks for the video Clyde. I had some strange behaviour from one of my pairs which you might be able to help me with. I have a pair, hen was over 18 months old as I bred her myself and male was purchased so no idea of age. I put them together and they paired very well and raised a clutch of 4 and all fledged. Male took over the feeding and the hen went down again on a clutch of 5, all were fertile so all was going well. However as soon as the eggs started to crack and hatch then some of the eggs were pitched, I found them in time and put them back in but again they were pitched. In the end the hen stopped sitting and they all got cold and were finished. My theory was that the male wasn't in feeding mode as he was feeding the first clutch solo while the hen sat on second clutch and he never did his bit on the second clutch. So I let them go for a third clutch and again the eggs were fertile but as soon as they started to hatch then the eggs were pitched out again. I separated the male and the hen did raise the only chick that survived so it was the male bird doing the pitching. Any ideas why the first clutch was successful and second/third were not? Why did the male switch behaviour?
Hi Jessica. The cock bird is prone to misbehaviour when they over stimulated hormonally. I have reduce the amount of softfood I give my birds and I have found it makes a big difference. So lets say you repeat the what you did first time around. When the second clutch is started reduce the protein in the softfood (egg to every second or third day). This way the first clutch still get the nutrients for optimal growth but the cock bird does not get over stimulated by breeding hormones. This should solve the problem.
@@thehouseofgouldians Thanks Clyde, thats good to know. I have retired him now for the season but I will track that for next time round. Thanks for the answer.
Great information Clyde.Thank you. I have had lots of clear eggs and screwed up with how to deal with, now I understand it. Appreciated
I live in United States. My Birds lady guardians they having diarrhea, but I cannot find the right medicine. If you can help me can you write the medicine name, please?
Hi. A couple of different things can cause diarrhea. This can be a sudden change from seed only to richer food like lots of egg in the soft food. Give seed only for a week or two but keep giving intestrum by medpet (vitamin with a probiotic) and see if the problem goes away if so then slowly re-introduce the softfood. If there undigested seed in the watery droppings that is commonly know as going lite (forget the scientific name). There are other bacteria that can cause diarrhea as well. I would recommend if the seed only trick does not work to take it to a vet so they can give you medicine that is locally available and specific to your issue.
Good day i want to ask some advice im selling a colony of gouldians some chicks has started to colour up and some has been out of the nest for a week and few days im pressured to move coloney by a week from now any advice as some of the last chicks has not yet lost the spots on the side of there beaks hopefully by friday 26 of April i can move them with minimal compliations.plz any advice would be appreciated thx
Hi. It is a big risk the chciks less than 3 weeks out the nest cannot survive without the parents. If keep them in a separate cage as a family you may be lucky.
I have one more question and I apologise if you already answered it as I watched some of the episodes quite some time ago and will watch the rest - why do they stop feeding chicks which already left the nest (suspicion) ? I lost 2 out of 32 juveniles so far and those two (one died yesterday and one the day before) were spotted sitting "tame" on the aviary floor- do they sense something wrong with the chicks and think "why bother" ? Or is it the parents' fault? Or perhaps my fault ? Thanx in advance
Francois, we don't fully know to be honest. Most make great parents and raise the young and wean then without problems. Some don't feed at all and abandon the nest when the eggs hatch. It is younger birds generally speaking that gibe us the problems as a rule but not always. This is why I try not breed first years. They are like teenagers they want the fun but not the responsibility.
@francoisvanwyk8361 we all learn don't feel bad. That is why I started the channel and the club.
@@thehouseofgouldians 👍🏻❤
Some people say to deworm birds every three months and others say you dont give medication to birds unless they are sick (i have outside aviary in south africa)- please advise
Hi Francois. This is going to sound funny but both are partially correct. De-worming is a prevention treatment same as treating for mite and coccidia. All of these organisms have an affect on the breeding condition of the parents and the survival rate of the chicks. Every breeder will give you different intervals of treatment. Personally I do it twice a year. Once before breeding and once before the moult. The second aspect of your question...don't treat unless sick I also agree with 100% in terms of antibiotics and other medicines that should only be used to cure a actual problem and NEVER used just incase. The reason I say this is simple. We know that in humans we have caused "super bugs" by the over subscription of antibiotics and people not completing the recommended course. The same applies to our birds. If we give antibiotics preventatively you are stopping them from developing there own immune system. Secondly the bacteria can become "immune" to the antibiotics so when you do need it they do not work. Finally antibiotics kill good flora in the gut and the birds then end up on a roller coaster of being off and on antibiotics as the moment they off it they start to get ill as they have lost the natural defense in the gut. (Therefore you always follow up with an immune booster and a probioticafter threatong with antibiotics). I hope this helps.
@@thehouseofgouldians Thank you so much sir for your thorough response and your channel - it is much respected and appreciated
You are always informative my friend! What's the size of your breeding cage? 👏👏
Hi. My wire vreeders are 750mm x 450mm x 450mm. Thanks for the feedback.
@thehouseofgouldians Awesome! Thank you!
I am confused can you please clarify 1.what size ring suitable for zebra and lady gouldian? 2.what day put ring on bird chicks? 3.plastic or metal?
Hi. 2.8mm 8s what most people use. You can go up to a 3mm particularly if you have big show quality birds. Normal day to ring is day 8 but you can still ring after this if you have the 3mm or if you use a bit of vaseline. Sometimes the bigger clutches develop slower and then you have to wait an extra day or two. In terms of plastic or metal that is personal preference. I personally use metal rings.
@@thehouseofgouldians Thank you for replying to my comment and guiding me
Very informative video! 👏 👏👏
Hi how do I send you photos
Hi Wayne. You can email gouldianfinchcollective@gmail.com Thanks
Apart from the initial costs, would a PVC box be useful? (if one exists for Gouldians).
You do get plastic nest boxes and even breeding cages. The only issue would ve the moisture in the nest boxes as it could lead to mold etc. I have seen a new design that has a lot of vents so that version should be fine.
Do you feed cuttlefish bone for calcium, or is your grit mix in your cages all the time ?
Hi Robert. I have crushed the cuttlefish and a mineral block and added it to the grit. They have permanent access to this mix.
Hi, came across your channel a few weeks ago, although i don't keep Gouldian's yet, i really enjoy viewing ,really educational . looking towards future episode and hoping you offer some advice on zebra as i do keep those.

Hi. You can join the House of Gouldians facebook group. We would love to have you on the group. Do you have gouldians of your own?
Afternoon sir where in south africa do you buy the food and water feeders thks alan
Hi Alan Kings soft food you can buy at turf pets. He sells the white auto feeders I use and he will have the drinkers as well.
Interesting, I don’t think we get pied in the Uk.
what to do when my gouldians eggs disapear while beerding
Hi. If they dissappearing one at a time it could be that one got broken and the parents will then eat the shell. It they all vanished the cock bird may have build the nest over the top of the eggs.
how do i increase protein level in Gouldian Finch ?
Hi Farooq. You would add egg to the softfood you are feeding them during the breeding season.
@@thehouseofgouldians I want to increase the size of birds like ivan Vera Top Breeder of Gouldian Finch From Spain. What he do for increase the size ?
Hi Farooq. You need to deliberately pick the biggest birds each year for breeding and sell off any small birds. The hen lays the egg so one theory is that the bigger the hen the bigger the eggs and the bigger the chicks. I think it does play a part but only if you also breeding the hen to bigger and bigger cock birds.@@FarooqBirds

Hi Jennifer. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
❤super appreciate 🙏 the wonderful information you provide. Cheers mate from the U.S.. Your videos are such a help and wealth of information. I had a question regarding removing the babies in colony breeding after they are fully weaned? Is best to wait until a bit of color shows on em?
Hi. You can normally safely remove youngsters at about forty five days old. In a colony setup I would be tempted to leave them longer so that they can learn good parenting from the other pairs and often these chicks will help feed the younger siblings from the next round.
