    Irish catholicism is not Roman Catholicism... it is an earlier Catholicism... the Roman church never did Ireland any favours and the interference of the Catholic Church in the 11th/12th centuries led to the Norman and later Anglo conquest of the Irish church... I believe to the detriment of the Catholic church as a whole...

    • @ivanj.conway9919

      It pre-dates the formalized, Catholic Church, doesn't it? Being of Protestant stock myself, for several generations now, this part always, gives me mixed feelings, as I have a lot of issues with the history and practices of the Catholic Church. So, why not call it simply, the Irish Church then, and drop the Catholic part, altogether?

  • @aisl6190

    The Irish famine... 90% of the population were disinherited farmers with allotments... when the potatoes failed there was nothing for the populace to eat... wheat, grain etc was the landlords... hare rabbits and other game were the landlords..g re. fishing required boats and nets for the sea, and in the rivers was the landlords... Ireland exported food - meat, grain and vegetables to England at the height of the famine... the Brits decided that all charity programmes should involve families moving to poor houses, where men women and children were seperated, and that work programmes should be followed... we still have famine walls, and "military" roads built by the people who took this option - we call certain people soupers... they took soup from the baptists and other Protestant minorities in return for food.... hence "soupers"

    This was an entirely unjust, unnecessary and completely pointless war. By this time, IE after ww2, The British Empire was a spent force. It was an economic millstone as well as an inhumane institution. I include all of the empires of Europe in this, which were entirely run by and for the benefit of the greedy elites or Ruling Class. All of the countries that were held as territory by the European empires should have been released. Those independent nations should have been guided and supported by the governments of the colonial powers. Instead the ridiculous Tory government tried to retain their former glory by doubling down on descents. They are still at it. The majority of the terrible things happening now, such as wars, migrant smuggling and terrorism are all instruments of the elite, ruling class. To keep the Third Estate in their place.

      It's something I just looked into and was stunned by honestly. It's something ive noticed when learning about remote indigenous countrys and cultures even on the most hard to reach places, the British impact always played into their demise. Even when they didnt mean to do so.

      @ Let’s not just say the British empire, all of them carried out unethical acts, particularly in the last half century of the imperial period. If we study the behaviour of the French in North Africa, the Spanish and Portuguese in South and central America. The North American Spanish and French colonies had been ceded long before but also were punctuated with brutality. We (The Third Estate) globally are living with the consequences of that period. It is the taxes of the ordinary folks that pay for the elites’ business excesses and our lives that are sacrificed on the alter of their bloody war business. A business is what it is, the profits of which are paid by our sweat , blood and misery. Why are these vile creatures allowed to continue doing what they do?

    • @BrighaMedia
      @BrighaMedia 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You’ve raised a really compelling point, and I completely agree-it wasn’t just the British Empire. The French in North Africa, the Spanish and Portuguese in South America, and so many others left behind legacies of exploitation and brutality. The consequences of those empires are still with us, shaping the world we live in today. Your mention of the 'Third Estate' really hits home. It’s true-ordinary people have always been the ones to pay the price, whether through taxes, war, or labor. The elites have built their fortunes on the backs of the many, and those same systems of power and exploitation didn’t just disappear when the empires fell; they evolved. As for why these people-these elites-are allowed to keep doing what they do, I think it comes down to the systems they’ve built to protect themselves. They’ve normalized inequality and distracted us from questioning the structures that sustain them. Your perspective is powerful, and it’s a reminder of how important it is to keep studying and exposing these histories. It’s not just about understanding the past-it’s about challenging the forces that are still at play today.

      @@BrighaMedia Uncomfortable history is then, now and tomorrow. It happens all the time. Gaza,Yemen,Ukraine,Syria etc etc. This is yet another pile-on of the British Empire who at least left behind a legacy of common law, a functioning democracy, a civil service, a judicial system and the abolishment of slavery. Of course it was not perfect...they never are. How about how the Romans conquered and enslaved or the Mongol armies or the Spanish in the Americas...shit happens and is happening right now.

    • @BrighaMedia
      @BrighaMedia 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I actually agree with you. I do believe that the things you mentioned are positive contributions made by the British, but why does that mean we can't also talk about the bad things? Perhaps it's the juxtaposition of both the good and the evil done by the complex British Empire that is so compelling. Like you said, they did have higher moral standards compared to other empires, which is why it’s such a difficult thing to digest when we here about acts like this. Do you feel like people are pilling on the British Empire?
