Most US college first-year admissions open around September and close in January then the decisions come out around December, March, and April (It depends on whether you applied early or not). Since students apply when they r in G12, your application results will come before you finish high school or even before taking matric. That is why they don't ask for matric certificate. And about Extracurriculars, sadly it's what most ppl in Ethiopia are struggling with. However, there are some competitive programs available. STEMpower for example has many branches around the country in many universities to help high school students in Science and technology fields. STEMpower along with other institutions hosts an annual science fair nationwide. This year was the 9th national science fair. Unfortunately, you can't work in STEM centers if there isn't a nearby university, but u can still go to the National Science Fair if u have built a project. Aside from STEMpower, other competitive events include Addiscoder, Brighter Generation, INSA summer camp, Ethiopian Mathematics Olympiad, and AI summer camp. Except for the math Olympiad, all are summer programs. I can't talk much about INSA and AI camp, but I have participated in Brighter Generation and four science fairs. I can assure you these are very good Extracurriculars both for application and for experience. But don't focus solely on existing programs. Start from your own school. Create clubs or with your peers to work on tutoring middle schoolers or whatever excites u. That said no matter what you do, it has to be meaningful, don't create some random club just to put it on ur application. Do something with that club. Sorry if this is too long, but I hope it helps. u should know that there are several international Extracurriculars but they r way more selective and hard to get into. If u r into research Lumiere Education can be a great start for u. they have fees but u can ask for financial aid plus they don't require previous research experience. In addition u can search "Competitive programs for high schoolers" to find what suits u best. Most of the ECs I mentioned are concerned with STEM. If ur interest is different may b some other ppl can share what they know. I hope this helps. wish u all the best bro.
