The Wildlands Garden
Portugal
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ม.ค. 2024
Welcome to the Wildlands Garden....
We currently have 2 distinct garden areas:
Our permaculture food forest!
Full of fruit trees, berries, and perennial vegetables plus wild flowers for beauty, food and bio diversity.
This garden follows the layout of our water capturing swales and the beds are designed to be polycultures, a mix of plants all chosen for the part they play in creating healthy soil.
The Food Forest is just 1 year old and is still a work in progress!
And our new market garden!
Here we'll be using No Dig techniques to create straight beds so we can grow large amounts of annual vegetables in a small space.
Striving for self sustainable living and growing as much of our own food as we can in a fairly small area.
We'll be sowing, growing and planting as well as propagating our own plants.
We'll also show you how we save water, save money and get plants for free!

Very informative
Best video and easist to understand ! Thank you
Glad it was helpful! And just filmed a bamboo root cutting video, be up soon 👌🙏
Thank you. You have a great video. The best so far.
Thanks 🌱 just filmed how, to take bamboo root cuttings, And how to save pot bound bamboo
Beautiful place! Seeing tomatoes growing outdoors is just a joy because they'll be so much better than grown indoors. Paul Gautschi once said during one of his tours that they have tested tomatoes grown indoors only containing 50 chemicals. The same varieties just grown outdoors was 200. :D
So true! And the toms taste so so so much better than the store bought ones l! ❤️🍅🍅🍅
Nice gardens! Wow, such a difference in what you can grow compare to the British isles :D
That's true! Although we have problems with too much heat and drought.... So August is like frost season in the uk where plants can always make it through the 40c plus!
Brilliant tour a must watch! 🌿🌻🌞
It really is! 🌿🌞🌻☀️
I have news for you. What you’re calling geranium is not geranium. It is citronella.
It's not citronella. It's Pelargonium graveolens
Where’s part 2 to this video?!😤
Hi it's updated in the video successes and failures
What were the results?
There's, an update in the video 'success and failure in our garden'. But long story short. Clumping bamboos OK to poor results on nodal cuttings, running bamboo less, success. But root cuttings of all bamboo tried superb results. Will do a full video on this 👌☀️
pulling a large root out of the ground is impossible with bare hands, have you ever tried this (video link) propagation system? Do you know if it is good for all bamboo species? th-cam.com/video/c-ITmN0Ciro/w-d-xo.html
Hi. Thanks for sharing. Is there an update for this? How did the water propagation method work in comparison to the soil method?
On running bamboo it was poor and the best method was from root cuttings. Had awesome results there! Will have to show you on a video
@@TheWildlandsGarden thank you for the response. Appreciated
@@TheWildlandsGardenyou cannot propagate running bamboo from cane cuttings, it isn’t possible so that is likely why it didn’t work
Any updates on the growth of these cabe cuts?
There's, an update in the last video, but long short best results, was from root cuttings. The cane cuts I'd not put the effort in again on running bamboo. But better results on clumpers
Love to see that video... ☺️ Can i have the link..? ☺️ @@TheWildlandsGarden
@@TheWildlandsGardenfrom what i understand.. Your cane cuts got best results from Clumping varieties?
Correct, for running best results from root cuttings, clumping not to bad on node cuttings but also good on root cuttings..... For root cuttings lift a potted bamboo and use secateurs to cut of 1/3of the roots. Repot the bamboo in a bigger pot with fresh soil. Then spread out the roots in a, flat large seed tray, cover with an inch of soil and keep moist. Once shoots, emerge cut 2 shoots of root and pot those on. Recover the remaining roots in the tray as more will come! Also for runners in the ground you can pull roots and use the same method.
great job (new subscriber)
Thanks for the sub! And happy growing 🌿☘️🌱
You have so many plants. Do you have a stand at the local markets and is it successful?
So many! And yes, we've recently started doing the odd market, having open days and also dropping plants to a central location which is working well 🌱☘️🌿
Amazing! ❤️
Thank you! 😄
Isn’t nature great all the same? 😊❤
Nature continues and never ceases to amaze me, and yes she is 🌱🌞🌱🍌😍🙏
I'm absolutely astounded on how far you've come and how well your gardens are growing, starting again from scratch here this year, it's been tough going, some successes but many more disappointments. You guys give me hope and inspiration, wish you lived closer so I could pick your brains !
We're only 15months in to as, also started from scratch in feb/March of last year..... And lots of learning here too. Especially adapting to a harsh climate of extremes! Where, are you based, remind me?
@TheWildlandsGarden South of you on the Teijo River near Chamusça ..my garden 3 years ago was in a different spot, then last years got totally fried in new area,( I had to leave for 5 weeks as the heat hit,and the volunteer here just didn't do the planned watering).. let the goats and chickens clear it out over winter, and started again this spring. So many things started got eaten in the mini greenhouse, keeping going and learning ,did plant a load of the edible perinials, not much came up ..still working away. Budget doesn't allow for buying much more this year, will soon start winter veg things though, and next year hope for better luck. Your videos are inspiring ..will just keep plugging away, hope to get irrigation sorted soon which will be huge!! Need more shadecloth too..most expensive veg ever 😆 but its a labour of love and a great distraction from work etc.
Haha yes most expensive vege ever but getting the infra structure in hurts financially 😕 We just put up a fairly rickety shade cover over the largest part of the nursery area, as like yours many plants, we're baking.....
Great to see the progress & YAY bananas!!!
Thanks and yes so pleasantly surprised on the nana!! 🙏🍌🍌🍌 Really pleased! ❤️
Thanks for sharing..
Thanks for watching!
How did the bamboo cuttings.. ?????
The node cuttings I wouldn't do again, minor success vs keeping them moist. Had great success with root cuttings. Will update those in a new video 👌🌱
@@TheWildlandsGarden Thx
Great. Hope they all do well for you
Thanks all doing well and growing fast! 🌱
Thank you for sharing. I will give it a go.
Pleasure and let me know how you get on. Worked way better on clumping bamboos. For running bamboos I had great success trimming the bottom 1/4 of roots, from the bottom of pots and spreading roots out in Xl seed tray cover with compost 🙌 the potted boo is also thankful of the space with new fresh compost on the bottom of the old pot
Great video. What is your hardiness zone?
Thank you and we're in ZONE 8. Are you growing any nana?
Excelente proceso
Thanks 🙏 are you growing bananas or want to?
Oh, that is very sad. This was one of your proud projects... Well.. new season, new chances?.. otherwise building a "underground greenhouse/walipini" might be an idea.
I was sad.... But I've some hardier new varieties that I need to order to try.... Onwards and there's defo pups comi3up so it's, not a total loss.... Love an underground greenhouse ❤️
Looking good
Thanks 👍
In process of creating visual screen. Bought clumping bamboo yesterday and plan to use your method to turn it into many more today. I was planting too shallow before. Not sure how much to water. Great video. No nonsense or cutesy stuff, just straight info. Thank you.
Nice do love a screen of bamboo makes, such a lovely noise. My best success was from root cuttings almost 100% whereas the success rate on the node cuttings, was vary variable dependent on type. I trimmed off the bottom 1/4 of potbound roots , spread those out into LG old seed tray covered with compost and watered great results! Will film it so you can see 🌱🌱🌱
I'm interested to know if you've studied the market for what you intend producing? Fruit and vegetables are abundantly available here, the majority of people grow their own,or have family who do. A few years ago I was growing and selling herbs and plants, a very difficult market,as the locals either already had or were not interested in trying new ones. Very difficult to get anyone to pay enough to make the effort worthwhile. Then other things took over,so I stopped at least for now. Also how remote are you? Do you have potential customers close enough?
Good question, tbh we've hijacked the, style of growing and will be growing our own food in the market garden. In the nursery we're growing edimental vege so perennial food that is not easy to obtain here but in demand. We tested the theory at a plant market and sold out.... So things like yakon, fartichoke Canna edulis, perennial onions etc etc as you're right common vegetables are abundant and for sale/available everywhere.
We're remote but also only 25 minutes from Castelo. I think most of our market is Immigrants and permaculturists, bio/organic gardeners ai dining to be more self sufficient in the varieties of food they grow. Perennial are amazing as harvest for ever in principle 🙏🌱
@TheWildlandsGarden I found the expats were the worst! Always wanted everything for nothing or at least considerably less than the price I asked, believe me my prices were good! I wish you guys the best of luck, good that you at least have a larger town nearby.
@TheWildlandsGarden don't ger me wrong,I had a good bunch of returning customers for the first couple of years, but then ofcourse, they had all the plants they needed for the time being so spent less and less..was rare for any visitors to leave with nothing though 😆
@TheWildlandsGarden yes there is definately a market for perennial veggies..I bought some from you guys,or at least I think it was from you? Hard to keep track when using messenger, if you posted yakon, artichoke etc to somewhere near Chamusca recently that was me 😆 if not it was one of your competitors! Which reminds me,I'm rehoming a load of pots in my next video..might be useful to you,if you ever travel down this way. Hopefully uploading that tonight/tomorrow on Embrace the chaos Portugal.
Your gardens are quite beautiful, especially the shots from the drone.😊🇨🇦
Aw that's, so very kind of you. We must get round to filming a proper garden tour 🌱 are you gardening in Canada?
Just a small patio area. There's not enough space for more.😊
Lovely though I bet always, amazing how great a little patio can look and feel 🌱
Fab video, you’ve both worked so hard, the gardens are beautiful
Thanks so much! 😊 How's yours going?
It's all coming along so beautifully! London is still coolish & mostly rain after maybe 3 days of upper teens.- jealous of your strawberries! Mine are struggling to put on any size let alone ripen. Yours look delish
Thanks and yes crazy strawberry this year! ❤️🍓 Whereabouts in London did you say you were as we lived in Camden for years
@@TheWildlandsGarden Kennington Oval for the last 13 years
That clover looked lush. Such a good plant. Question...do you puncture the cardboard to allow the roots to grow through? I'm interested in doing more with no dig and it always says prepare the beds in the autumn so the cardboard rots by planting season. But of course I'm not that organised!
Clovers gone crazy with the mild winter and mega rains! Yes puncture to plant through. If you water first it's generally quite soft and easy to plant through 🌿🌱 I really do love no dig sure you'll be the same once you try it 👌🌱
@@TheWildlandsGarden I'm in the West, UK and can't grow it at all. Thanks for the advice - much appreciated!
Will be interesting to see how many you get.
Look forward to our harvest! :) Are you growing potatoes?
@@TheWildlandsGarden Yes. I grow then in old feed bags and containers until we move.
Nice, Rosie has hers in old Compost bags, and they seem to be doing well 🥔🥔 hope you get a great crop
That's the most ridiculous thing we've ever seen, the potatoes need to be covered with soil or they get green and poisonous
No dig potatoes in straw is a proven method. Presume you're assuming and haven't tried it as we've had great success. No dig methods are often 'attacked' by traditionalists especially those that till or leave soil exposed. But year after year test beds by the likes of Charles Dowding yield much better results and higher yields from no dig vs digging/ ploughing.
We just dug up these potatoes. Beautiful, very shallow much easier to get the potatoes out of the ground and no green ones. Give it a try! 😊
❤
Thanks hopes all going well in your garden?
Execelente dia bro🎉
Obrigado! 🌱💚🌱🥔
Great idea. We're about to sow potatoes this weekend so perfect timing
Perfect! Let me know how they get on and happy potato plantings 🥔👌🍠😍
Dom about your back. I noticed when you were digging the compost you were using your back. I’m no expert, but Google correct posture when digging, as I think you should be bending your knees more. Hope this helps. 😊❤
Yes, I saw that too! And I thought I was digging correctly but I'm not 😢
😊❤
🌞🌱😊🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔
Thank you so much for the idea I'm going to try to do that myself great video
You are so welcome and do let me know how you get on and how many potatoes you get! 🥔🤔👀👌
I love the look of this method - I'm going to try it on my allotment. My other plan for this weekend is inoculating an area with wine cap mushrooms. I was going to use straw for that too, under some wood chip. I need to go and find some straw!
It's, so super easy and my test bed looks like the results will be good! And super excited for you on the wine caps, let me know how that goes, as love to try some mushrooms! 🍄
@@TheWildlandsGarden I thought wine caps would be good as they're easy to identify! I grew them on my old allotment and they popped up all over the place!
Looking good!
Thank you! Cheers!
Any thoughts to add coffee grounds? Thank you for the idea to plant the tea plant as companion. I have both of these ready to go, but had not researched the tea planting as of yet. In hot climate as well, so giving it a partial shade spot when I decide where that is.
The jury is out on coffee grounds, have a look at this... www.bigblogofgardening.com/coffee-grounds-acidify-garden-soil/ Pleasure on the Tea I hope your's do well do let us know how they get on and if you get some good teas
Muy buen video 🎉
Muito obrigado 😍👌❤️
Peat mixed in soil makes it acidic.
Didn't know that, however peat is illegal here so no compost contains it.... Also it's no longer sustainable so we would not use it. But thanks for the heads up 👌🙏
Using anything the petrochemical industry creates is'nt doing the soil any good. In Germany they are making sustainable peat. Fresh unused coffee grains will make the soil acidic or create your own anorobic composter using water. Or just grow what naturally grows in your region.
We're adding coffee grounds and we make our own compost. But using bagged ericaeous compost was just quicker to start as the blueberries needed to get established before it gets too hot
My blue berries are planted in large pots and are in partial shade and do very well and I am in South Wales I hope yours do well
Thanks for that, what size pots? As might try a few... Do they fruit well still?
50cm pot or about 40 litre pot yed one has been in the same pot for 3 years I use chicken manure pellets to feed once a year love your channel
@@RedPhone-mz5lvthanks will definitely also try some in pots 👍🙏🌱
Hope the blueberries do well for you
Thanks, one plant already has a small crop and there's quite a few flowers 🙏
Sadly we don't have the veggie garden anymore. First we had 2 of the pink lemonade, my hubby liked it so much we bought more ended up with 5. Totall 15 plants. 2 had such big and deliscious fruits, some were 3 cm. Picking was a chore that's why I loved the big ones, besides the fact we planted them just too close to each other for comfort, if we would do it again. I would keep at least 1 meter distance🫐🫐🫐🫐😅. They grew very fast, blueberries don't like to be planted too deep and to keep the roots cool and preventing them to dry too fast we had them covered under a thick layer of woodchips.
Great info and ours are fairly close but not worryingly close, prob near enough 3/4of a meter.... Was Pink Lemonade actually pink? And same flavour as a 'normal' blueberry?
They were mostly pink/creme mix and absolutely delicious..not just the color but also the taste..pink lemonade. Reminds me of the movie Sound of music "pink lemonade"😅
Never knew you could make compost from worms
Me neither in the past but the worm casts are super good for the garden and food forest. We really need a bigger system. Once worms, are established will set up more wormery 👌🙏
Wow cheer up. Good job get information , i 'm from thailand and love bamboo
Glad you enjoyed and we love bamboo to! 💚 Bet your bamboo grows huge!?
