NFTs & Fine Art - Is this the future?
มุมมอง 3.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I have recently released a series of NFTs (digital artworks). The concept of NFTs is very new, especially in connection to Fine Art. That's why I wanted to briefly share my views on it in this video. These are the topics discussed: - What makes NFTs interesting for fine artists? - How to display or enjoy a piece of digital art? - Will NFTs change the fine art scene? - The current NFT landscape ...
Casting a plaster sculpture: from mold to finish | FEN DE VILLIERS ATELIER
มุมมอง 13K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A clay maquette doesn't last, yet I'm not prepared to lose it. The maquette holds the raw energy of creation inside it: hours of contemplation, playing with form, balancing shapes and perfecting details, all consolidated in a small model. As the original clay won't stand the test of time, I like to eternalise my maquettes in limited edition plaster series. This video shows the entire process of...

The stone works are now coming closer to being finalized, as we push towards the exhibition in March 2021. Behind the scenes sneak peek of the process.
Why Modernism was aesthetically superior to Postmodernism
มุมมอง 2.8K4 ปีที่แล้ว
HEROES OF MODERNISM Part1: Archetypes of Power in Turbulent Times (Italian Futurism, Russian Constructivism & Vorticism) Hard times create strong men. And strong men create powerful art. That's what we see in the '-isms' of Modernism. Italian Futurism, Russian Constructivism and Vorticism had a raw energy that is seldom seen today. In this video I discuss in a very casual, unprepared way some o...
Reflections - The beginnings of a stone sculpture

Preparation before starting a stone work is like packing your kit for an adventure. Once you have started carving the stone, there is no way back. Careful plotting is vital for a successful outcome.
Reflections - Clay sketch for stone sculpture
มุมมอง 5144 ปีที่แล้ว
During this quiet time, I started thinking more deeply about my practice as a sculptor. I wanted to share with you some intimate thoughts and feelings that come over me while making sculpture. This short clip is part of a series I call 'Reflections', exposing my raw insights during the process. Let me know what you think!
Reflections - Figure as a frame for form
มุมมอง 3164 ปีที่แล้ว
I am a figurative sculptor, but the figure is not my main concern. I use the human form as a frame to contain shapes that radiate the right energy, power and movement. In this video I am working on the clay maquette for my next stone sculpture.
Fine art sculpture: is this it?
มุมมอง 1.8K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Over the years as a fine art sculptor, it has become clear to me that Postmodernism, the ruling art trend, leaves little to no room for real, substantial sculpture. If a piece of work is not 'trendy' or 'conceptual' or fighting a social justice cause, it is not accepted in the art world anymore. But let me ask you this: do you feel nourished by the cultural setting that we inhabit? I miss the v...
για σκεψου λιγο...ειναι ολα τα μεγαλυτερα μουσεια της Γης γεματα με Κλασσικη Τεχνη η με μοντερνα τεχνη? Και γιατι?
Where's the finished work?
Carving away, reveal by removal. But also a piece of the artist breaks away and is forever captured in the sculpture. So in the end there's less mass but heavier presence. Beautiful work of art indeed!
Absolutely breathtaking!! You are truly gifted. My life's work is aimed as to one day have the honor of owning one of your masterpieces
I totally agree with you and I’ve been thinking about this more recently with the whole “ai art’’ thing. It seems to me that the people most concerned with having their intellectual property stolen make some of the most derivative art it’s not that it’s unappealing it’s just that it’s more concerned with being commercially viable than being original and there nothing wrong with that we all have our inspirations and we all need to eat, but it seems like the more they try to protect their style from AI algorithms the more they lay claim to a cultural influence that they did not create. I think the problem is all that people see when they look at art now is “style”. I have worked making copies of “masterpieces” for charity projects and have found that people don’t really understand what is going on in the paintings for instance when I was copying some of Franz Mark’s work I instinctively started out in black-and-white and then added vividly colored glazes and some of the other artists acted as though this was somehow wrong only later did find out that this is exactly how Franz Mark made these paintings . And recently I took a figure drawing class and when we did the exercises concerning contour, foreshortening ,negative space that kind of thing my results were different than everyone else’s. It wasn’t till the end of the class that I realized that everyone thought, including the teacher that I was just trying to do my own thing which couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s just that when I made something like a gesture drawing it didn’t look like the “style” of gesture a drawing that they saw in their mind. Anyway my point is that people seem to only see the style or message of piece of art now and not see the experimental technique or unique worldview that are the backbone of true modern art.
I’m deeply in love with the symbolism behind this, at least as I interpret it. It radiates vitality and optimism! I’ll keep a close eye on your career! In my opinion, we desperately need art of this kind.
I am very pleased you see that in this work. Thank you for letting me know!
I hope you do more 'artistic diaries,' because this was glorious in its simplicity: just a man with a unique talent thinking aloud while he creates. Please do more things like this; it was delightful.
Thank so much, glad you enjoyed it. There will certainly be more videos like this in the future as I plan to work alongside someone who can make films and such for me.
@@fendevilliers7914 So glad to hear it. Keep up the good work and looking forward to what you do next. Hail to the artists!
Stunning work Fen~
appreciate it, thank you!
Hey Fen, brilliant stuff mate; it's like a combination of the early Greco/Roman aesthetic with an Art Deco revival; this is what we like to see. We here at ConservaQuote have been a fan of your work for some time, and that is why you are soon to be featured on our brand new TH-cam channel. We celebrate the voices of people who deserve recognition by promoting the independent, dissident talents of our day, (no screeching liberals or ugly modern art allowed on our channel.) 'Conserve a Quote, Conserve a Thought,' and that's what we do with our quotes channel. You can expect a high quality presentation dedicated to various quotes of yours throughout your shining career soon. Keep up the good work and look forward to hearing from you!
Hey ConservaQuote! That's so cool what you're doing. I agree that Fen is a one of a kind, and I'm sure he will be flattered, I know that I would be. Definitely going to check out your channel now and see what other 'independents' you are promoting.
Can that material be put outdoors?
Yes it absolutely can! For 100s of years, bronze practically lasts forever.
@@fendevilliers7914 ohhh. I thought it was made from plaster
Stunning work, sir.
I very much appreciate this. Thank you.
Love your sculptures man!
Thank you!
Share your passion for this underrated aborted period especially the vorticistss
Stalin would approve
Stalin loved Art Deco interestingly enough.
I agree! Contemporary "art" is by NO MEANS fine art. It's more like spoiled brats who used to draw and paint in grade school are now "given" permission to masturbate in public. I am sick of it!!!
Can you share what did you use for sealing the piece? I am trying to seal plaster pieces and paint them with oil based paint afterwards. Thanks
To seal my plaster sculptures I use a high quality micro-crystalline wax. In this video though I am applying an earth pigment mix to take away the pristine white colour of the plaster and make it more off white.
@@fendevilliers7914 Thank you so much for sharing.
Dada succeeded in destroying art, those are my villains. Postmodernism was captured by exactly those postmodernism was against
This is why I love carving stone, a meditative state, you put words on what I feel.
While this guy sculpts this, why is he whispering: "vortexes, power, machines of monstrous force, vital energy, electricity, nuclear armaments, furnaces, carpet bombing, live wires, spontaneous combustion, plutonium, seismic forces, spiralling vortexes, raw power" Is that some sort of eastern mantra thing?
Hahaha you cracking me up here man 🤣🥂
TRUE IF BIG.
Yeah I wish this was bigger 🥲
Beautifull! Hopefully I'll get to see your work in person someday.
Incredible! The attention to detail is amazing!
Really glad it resonates with you, thank you for the positive comment 🙏
Yes. We lust for Strong Art. At a time where impressive monuments are being pulled down, I desire to see them rise anew.
Yes absolutely agree! Things are turning, I do believe we will see a far more vital future.
Excellent. These pieces and your commentary feels like the heroic or energetic quality that I kind of imagined was happening during the times when masterpieces of work were created. Contrast that against what I see now, boring, draining, disorienting, low quality, vain. This however seems to be aiming upwards.
Wonderful to read this thoughtful and positive comment. My honest belief is that art should to some degree talk to something beyond just the petty elements of our modern existence. There is an epic journey ahead and I truly wish to one day look back and say I left behind some work that others may inspire off 🙏🏻
Subbed
Thank you sir 🙏
i really recommend two extremely good contemporary sculptors from Belgium, Koenraad Tinel and Berlinde De Bruyckere, they both know how to manipulate the material to their hands, and De Bruyckere even shows her capacities on the classical fine sculpting, with hooded angels. They remain contemporary, with critical ideas, their style is variant, but true to their own, and they walk a line of technicality and expression.
Yes I am well aware of these sculptors. I am happy they still actually make. Rare in these times! 😅
I've always disliked the more angular statues ala socialist realism, but you taking it to a more platonic form of shapes and angles gives it far more depth both emotionaly and dynamically than the compromise could ever give.
Really wonderful to see how you have absolutely nailed exactly what I was going for. These pure forms were a pleasure to work with in this composition. Thank you for your insightful comment 🙏🏻
Amazing. Such precision.
Thank you very much, glad you like it sir 🥂
I don't know if you like Ayn Rand, but <The Fountainhead> is my all-time-favorite book, and I totally agree with you.
I have not read it actually. Perhaps one day I shall. Glad the video resonated with you sir!
this needs to be posted as Unintentional ASMR--- im saying this as a compliment ...your thought and ideas are intellectually soothing
Ah well that is fantastic to hear. Glad that it resonates with you, cheers 🥂
What app is he using with the VR to view the NFTs in the virtual gallery?
Well done! You should have millions of views- fantastic production and content. To your point there is no shock of the New in the art world and very little true craft.... part of it is economics and part of it is cultural nepotism.
Is there way we can trade the actual physical Sculpture as NFT? What if I want to hold the physical one and that becomes the value How does the digital one and the corresponding physical one go together.
The physical sculpture now only exists as a bronze work or plaster cast. The NFT is based on the original clay model that now no longer exists. I suppose if someone were to be interested in having the physical version and the NFT together I could make some arrangement with them.
South African living in Norway here. I like your work, as you say very powerful! I have been racking my brain on how to find a connection between NFT's and physical art pieces. The idea of a 3D print option alos intrigued me, but I am on the border of the technological-out-dated-generation and things are just moving too fast. I mean a minute of advancement in the It world, equates to a day or two for me to figure it out. Hopefully we'll see some type of 'NFT hedge funds' springing up, managing the IT part on behalf of physical medium artists. Maybe they could incorporate a 3D concept as well. Wish I had the knowledge to do that myself.
Ah, another artist with a connection to SA, always good to find others! Glad that you came across my video here. Yes the entire NFT space is something I am honestly having trouble keeping up with, hopefully in time things fall a little more into focus and it makes further sense to me and us 😂 🥂
Beautiful Work!
This is way awesome... Love it!
Could some on buy the 3-d scan and then 3d print mold and mass produce your image?
Did you find an answer??
These things will have a digital signature on the blockchain that will virtually guarantee authenticity. We can't stop reproduction but we Can authenticate .
I like the breakthrough statue.
Ah glad you like it 🙏🏻 you can see more of it on foundation.app and search for my name.
Great video sir!
Thank you very much! 🙏🏻
Also, unlike physical work, an nft is actually easy to buy and sell usually art is seen more like a commodity and less as an investment because it's hard to sell physical art but online things are more accessible. nft's are both a commodity and an investment, and a support directly to the artist
You're such a superstar.
Due to overpopulation and dwindling resources this will become the main way the lower classes will view art, and most all visual/audio experiences. People will be in a semi-amnestied state immersed in a virtual reality world that will resemble the Matrix (aren't they already?). A night out on the town with dinner and a gallery will be only for those of means. Also education standards will be so lower caste people won't even appreciate art. They will be viewing "shoot-em-ups" & sports in their displays. Buying an art token will just be another way the wealthy will show off their position. Besties their "originals" they will have displays on their walls with NFT's. I hope it works out for the artists.
Excellent piece. The facets and abrupt angular dimensions, really bring out the form.
Thanks a lot! Gives me great energy to read this comment 🙏🏻🔥
The bike works good on me thanks for show
Thank you!
great work! strikes fear in the traitors heart.
Haha thank you Sir!

Haha thank you so much man 🙏🏻😊
I do sketches Nd recently started sculpting Im really confused about digital artworks and nft stuff But maybe after some year I should give it a shot!!
I posted to Twitter.
Interesting video. It’s great for an artist like me thinking about getting into nfts.
Ah glad you liked it man!
Hey. Im feeling embraced to finally see someone on internet sharing similar ideas about today"s art world. About the importance material and spirit of hand made objects. Art is sacred, it represents our culture where we are and what do we seek for. Although Im just a student in arts gymnasium in Lithuania still am fascinated by those things and hope to get in touch with you.
Thank you for your insightful comment! I have a twitter page where I discuss these sorts of cultural things more openly. If you would like to talk to me over a DM feel free. twitter.com/FendeVilliers
