So whilst in the vicinity, I decided to pull my phone out and get some footage of the soon to be redeveloped 'Smallbrook Queensway' in Birmingham. I understand the project is currently in the planning phase (despite objections from a few who wanted to save the brutalist buildings) and represents an exciting new development for Birmingham City Centre in the coming years, which I'll be sure to co...

HMV used to be under the Empire. CeX used to be WH Smiths. The Army careers office used to be a Swiss Restaurant in the 1970s when fondues were seen as the height of sophistication (!) Opposite Scud, where that hexagon is on the floor, there used to be an aviary, like there is in Memorial Park. And behind the old IKEA, I remember when all that land was the GEC telephone works. Jeeeeeeezus..... I now really do have absolutely nothing to go back to Coventry for... Everything that I knew as a child and as a young adult will be gone. Just as well I've never had any kids of my own so that I cant take them back there to see where I grew up, where I went to school, where I had my first job, where my parents and grandparents used to work and shop and...... daaaaaaaaaaamn, theres gonna be f all left......

The old road bridge is Aston Church Road. Built in blue brick viaduct style. The new bridge is the new road over rail bridge, allowing HS2 to run parallel with the main Derby line. The big rail over rail bridge was slid in to place to replace a blue brick viaduct which the HS2 could not pass under it. The high level rail is the freight line from Stechford, To Perry Barr, Bescot.

I think it's absolutely unbelievable that people wanted this saved, outrageous given the state it's in. If it was all being constantly used, or if it was peoples'' homes for instance then i'd maybe have a bit of understanding, but this is completely unoccupied with absolutely zero realistic proposal of renovation or re-purposing. It's a disgusting looking eyesore in the heart of what is supposed to be a modern major European city and needs to be removed asap.

This development even though has many memories for many, should go ahead, old night clubs Locano & Romeo & Juliets. The development doesn't reach the actual island, that was intended to be the biggest Mosque in Britain but ideas appear to be shelved, that's completely different. Smallbrook Queensway could be refurbished but I like the tall office apartments like New York so reach for the sky Birmingham.

I come from Coventry I went to school in the 50s and early 60s I haven't been there for 5 years but every time I go and when my mate goes we can't find our way about as they keep bloody changing everything they are demolishing building that haven't been up that many years. I went to Priory high school down by Cox street and Ford street, we sometimes went to Owen&Owen at lunchtime or the old gas showrooms along Corporation street. We used to go on a Saturday to watch wrestling in the old drill hall.

The building on the corner which you focused on for the first minute isn't part of the plans - the Ringway Centre is the building next door, immediately after the little recessed link block that's a more brownish-grey. SBQ1, 2 and 3 were the former office suites and conference centre in the upper floors (check historic StreetView footage). Sidenote: a lot of the Birmingham building projects are extensively discussed in the forums on a site called Skyscraper City: Home > Forums > European Forums > UK & Ireland Architecture Forums > Projects and Construction > Birmingham Metro Area, which cover projects from pre-application through to (exterior) completion.

It needs knocking down but I'm old enough to remember when it was all brand new and shiny and looked like the future, not convinced a lot of what is built today won't suffer the same fate, depends how the materials weather over 2 or 3 decades. Not sure how old you are but about 50 years ago they did a promo film for Birmingham that you can find on YT, its called Telly Savalas looks at Birmingham, where you can see all this when it was new.

The maximum speed of S&C units to use that still has a reasonable whole life cost is 230kph (approx 140mph), so where HS2 trains turn off or join the main trunk route they have to slow to that speed. As a result the bit of route from Curzon street to where it joins the main trunk of the HS2 route is engineered for at most that maximum speed, with the bits close to curzon street being aligned for progressively slower and slower speeds. So basically the bit from Curzon street to Interchange isn't a 'high speed' bit of route, it's an express conventional speed section, hence can have tighter curves both horizontally and vertically than you'll see on other bits of the route out in the more 'countryside' parts.
