    • @watermarkdata7048

      If you're getting an error when you use the formula like you provide in your response, the first place I'd check would be to make sure your data types are consistent with your filter. In other words if you're sorting numeric values, make sure the data field is numeric.

    Love your videos. I think it would be great for your channel if you included in the title what it is that you’re doing in alteryx. I want to save your video for future reference but it’s hard to do so since the title doesn’t say much about what it is you’re doing. Overall your videos are great! Keep doing what you’re doing brotha

Glad to hear you enjoy, and thanks for the comment. Maybe I can go back to some of my earlier ones and add the business question part.

    Hi , nice explanation! Just a polite suggestion- would be a great help to the learners if you could pls explain the logic of the formula used. Eg- regex match , how and why does it work. Thanks !

    • @watermarkdata7048
      @watermarkdata7048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aishwarya, Each regex of instance is different, but I can explain this one a little more. The idea is, isolating each separate letter. If you open Regex, you'll see to the right of it a large "+" symbol in the section where you insert regex code. If you click on the "+", it expands various regex code you can readily insert by selecting. The very first choice on that list is a ".", with an explanation of 'Any Single Character'. This is what we need for 'this' flow. We want to isolate every character, and we select the "Tokenize" which essentially does a version of parsing, but allows us to parse that pattern to a separate row. Again, what we're looking for in this flow. It's impossible to explain every use of every regex in a video since Regex is effectively an entire programming language in it's own right and there are full websites devoted to it, and full courses on youtube or teaching channels (ie udemy, coursera, etc) on how to program Regex. The subject is huge, so I can talk to solving 'this' problem, but it's beyond scope to really do much more on 1 video. Hope this helps.

    On a side note Mark, won't using a sample block with n=5 and grouping by Class Name after sorting the data be a better idea?

    • @watermarkdata7048
      @watermarkdata7048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'd agree with you. That approach is probably easier. Lot's of ways to skin a cat. I've used/demonstrated that method in other videos. What you're proposing combines the ranking/filter. If you want to have the multi-rank ( 1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 5) it doesn't capture it. Really boils down to if you want to be have visibility to the 'n' sample size ranking as a separate piece of information or if you just want it to do it. Part of these videos is showing different ways to do the same thing.

    How about we add a container, instead of comments box?

    • @watermarkdata7048
      @watermarkdata7048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can absolutely use containers and achieve the same effect. Lots of ways to skin the cat. Gain the ability to move tools together and to minimize the box. Lose some of the flexibility on sizing the box, placement of tools in the box, and control of font used for description. Just a balance on what you'd prefer.

    Would the result be correct if we had joined the data back only by using "year"?

    • @watermarkdata7048
      @watermarkdata7048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're talking about the first join where we also use count and gender you'd end up matching the max against every value for the year. Something you 'might' want to do if you were trying to get say maybe the difference between the count of every other name versus the highest/max. You add gender because 'that' specific value 'might' show up in both genders and you want to be sure you're making the right match.

  • @noviceconsulting4302
    @noviceconsulting4302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, when we join the data back to get the name, what happens if let us say we have identical max values for two names?

    • @watermarkdata7048
      @watermarkdata7048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you'd have had a tie for the name, used the most that year. Out of 'all' the names that could have been used, it would be insanely unlikely. Other circumstance you would could potentially bring back 2 records, and the other gender would show the same twice. At that point you'd have to decide based on what exactly it is you're identifying if you want to add an additional feature to create further delineation.

  • @noviceconsulting4302
    @noviceconsulting4302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried the regex method to get the year out of the string. It appears to be taking more time than the formula based approach!! Is that behavior expected?

    • @watermarkdata7048
      @watermarkdata7048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what your regex necessarily looks like, but try this : Regex Parse .*(\d{4}).*

    • @watermarkdata7048
      @watermarkdata7048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saad, Believe you're referring to this ==> datetimeformat("2000-"+padleft(tostring([M Cnt]),2,"0")+"-01","%b")? To convert it, yes, you need the whole thing. You're essentially fooling the system into believing you're working with a date with the Alteryx standard format of "yyyy-mm-dd" You're then telling the system that you want a specific piece of that date, the month in a 3 character format. That is what the "%b" portion is saying. Please reference the following web page for formats: help.alteryx.com/2018.1/index.htm#Reference/DateTimeFunctions.htm?Highlight=datetimeformat Scroll down to the table of "SPECIFIERS" for different formats you can work with.
