@@jay-gx9uy I know, I'm an idiot! I really wanted to catch a big Mack and it's been so hot weather wise at Berryessa I have been targeting lakes near Truckee to beat the heat, but I'm headed back to Berry for sure, stay tuned!

Years ago the glow in the dark flatfish and J plug are the best. The big ones that are for salmon. When the ice leaves the lake is the best. My best is 18#.
@@MartinLai-p7k Hi Martin, thanks for watching and commenting, I have some of those flatfish from trolling on the Sac Rover for Salmon, I'll give them a try. I think my struggles at Donner have come down to fishing in the Summer, I need to hit it up in the Spring. Stay tuned, I'll get a bigin' on the line!

I think that day I started slow and then sped up and started doing aggressive S-turns to entice a reaction bite and then boom, got one! I think I was going like 3.5mph when I got the strike. The fish seem to be glued to the bottom up there right now. Lemme know how you do if you go!

I’m not a big Kok guy but when I go I always use Shoepeg corn on the last hook. Usually marinade them works best. I did not believe it but it does help.

Fighting the elements. Kokanee Fishing Stampede no matter the conditions. Hope you find more “nuts”. Marking lots of fish and locator is reading perfect…and quoting Fong…no wonder you find a nut now and then. Nicely done. Drag the bottom this time of year. Big dogs just off the bottom or right on it.

For setbacks the rule of 100 is where to set it, So say 70 deep 30 feet back. And 8 to 10 inches on your leaders with a hoochie. And trolling speed between .9 and 1.4 mph. Those fish you were catching are next years fish. Bigger ones are deeper than you were fishing.best of luck it's a learning curve. Just throwing out things that will make you more successful on that bodie of water.
@@johnnyjohnson5235 Thank you for the tips Johnny! Yeah, the bigger ones have been hard to find this year at Stampede. I was trying to find calmer water with the wind so I pushed up the west inlet of the lake and was fishing in total depths of only 50ft. Started in middle of the lake in deeper water but just too windy to maintain slow trolling speeds. Love it up there though, there should be bigger fish next year given all the smalls this year. That lake is hard to get them Lakers but ur right in a way with bait but try using an anchovy I heard from someone that they work good but have to have it on bottom all the way no trolling just drifting 100 feet or more is about right

I’ve been fishing Donner Lake for many years. It seems to be getting tough the past few years for Mackinaw. Many skunk 🦨 days. I had one great day in May this year with a 17 & 12 lb and lost another big one. Use big plugs that have good movement. Try a Lyman or Horde biggest size you can find. I use a custom plug 7 - 8 in trolling speed 2 to 3.5. Other stuff that I have used in the past big Rapala’s, Kwikfish, I like to jointed the best. Spoons used Krocodile and Hum Dinger. Best month to target Mackinaw late February to May when surface temperatures are still cold 48-56 degrees. Good luck🎣🐟🐟🐟👍

Now you got me all fired up again to get back on Donner. I know the fish are deep but with your info I think I have a better chance for sure. It's tricky to troll at those depths, with the rocks and changing topo, and then pop offs and resets, but big game hunting ain't easy! Lets goooo!

Hard to High Stick big clear water, need some structure to hide behind while fishing up river. In short, little truckee tough. But there in there . Good luck, havent fished that post pandemic. But I know that run well.😊 enjoy the journey. Fly-fishing Nor Cal and the Truckees 30 years now, still learning them every trip! Which really makes it Fun!

I was camping there last weekend. I was probably trolling right next to you and didn't even know it! I only go up to Stampede once a year but the fishing was good on Saturday. Nothing huge, but good fishing!

Beautiful lake. I was up there a month ago and was just opposite. 30 plus fish in the boat. We found one brown got to boat and with one big head shake, poof gone 😢.
@@Setthehuk yeah, I think the hot weather in mid 90's drove the fish to the bottom. I will be back and hopefully with a better report. Hey Rusty, what were you using and general tactics when you were up there?
@@blindsquirrelchannel3853. The water temp was much lower 63-66. The presentation of the day was metal head trolling fly- pink was hot! Chewed all the material off and it still kept working. Found the cuts out in middle of lake deep. Bows were all top to 25. Speed 2.2-2.8 Jon boat side planner put some nice fish on. The regular spoons, small rapala did ok. Fish hunt shoot flies and gear primarily.

Stampede Lake looks like it has a beautiful shoreline. How is the water clarity? Chartreuse huh? That’s my favorite color it always works!

@@phatdogfishing7545 Hey PhatDog, I just learned from the fishing counter at Mountain Ace Hardware in Truckee, that if you are catching small Kok's to move! Apparently there are bigger ones in there but if you are catching smalls you are only gonna catch smalls so make a move. That's what I heard at least, good luck!

Best lake but gets hot and cold regarding the bite. Seems last 10+ years have been weakest, from the docks, due to lower stocking #'s compared to the 80's and 90's but those Macks are definately out there.

I went back to Donner today with my boys, skunked! Headed to Pyramid Lake next!
