I'm thinking the C&NW footage is from Marshalltown, IA where the original C&NW, M&StL and CGW crossed west of town.
Anyone know where’s the CNW footage from?
A beautiful quality to this. Rich color and good resolution of classic railroad film. Someone did a heckuva good job restoring/preserving this footage. I subbed.
Thanks! My father used mymovietransfer.com to digitize his 16mm film several years ago. There will likely be a pause while we digitize the next batch.
Good old agent orange
I started working for the Railways in 1970 and most of the years i took my free pass anywhere you wished for The station masters had so much proud of there stations even the sidelines looked impressive Nothing left today Go look at Touwsrivier station to get a idea Nothing left Eish wtf
Growing up near the UP in Kansas in the 70s these were familiar views. I seemed to like those old UP gondolas. They were used for so many different things including tie service. I paid a lot of attention to MOW equipment, lots of 50 foot outside braced bunk cars, used to be auto haulers
The MILW depot in Ringling lasted a good while but it must have fallen into disrepair and is now gone
frisco footage is few and far between nowadays, thank you guy!
Absolutely the best film I've ever seen of SAR in the last days of it's heyday. Just superb. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, thank you!
Amazing to see some rare MoPac films from this era. Thanks for posting.
My pleasure!
Holy cow, this is excellent footage. Thank you for posting it, Frisco film is hard to come by. By chance was there a location given for the Frisco footage?
Frisco crossing MP has to be Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, or Kansas.
Everything I have is in the title. Unfortunately my fathers trip notes are missing at the moment.
No worries. I'll let you know if i figure out where. @@GuyWicksall
@@GuyWicksall I dig some digging, and my first guess was correct. The Frisco footage was filmed in Paola, KS
All of this footage is a reminder of how many sidings and spurs used to have around. Classic footage. Thank you for posting.
No audio, no commentary, just really excellent images! Thank you so very much for going to the trouble of sharing these!
Paradise LOST. I have 3 professionally recorded vinyl records documenting the closing stages of the South African steam era. If you're ever out here again I will be happy to give them to you. They were made by the husband of Dee Worman who sadly passed away a short time before I estimate these excellent films were made. Shout out to all the enthusiasts who went to the trouble driven by passion to record the beauty of the era they were part of.
Hey, Guy, this film is fantastic and never seen here in Uruguay, congratulations and Thanks a lot for share it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@GuyWicksall this is unbelievable, here in Uruguay there are not videos about railways from those years with so clear quality, it was made by a professional, i was looking for videos like this and the oldest i found was about 1990 when railways had been disabled in 1988. this is one of the last moments of the golden era, thanks again.
@@backuparchivo6770Why did they disable the Railroads?😢
What a good document!!
Man, those power lash ups.
@GuyWicksall do you have more film of Uruguay? Or pictures? Great shots!
My father only went once. There might be 35 mm slides of locomotives. I'm digitizing them but I'm only in the C's. photos.wicksall.net
The demotored trainset in Uruguay was a Simmering Graz Pauker one, built in Austria in 1951.
very nice - thanks :-)
Glad you liked it!
I went to South Africa to train spot on holiday late 79 and in the 80's so travelled over most of the lines featured. I did see an ES at Umzinto before travelling all the way to Donnybrook. When the drivers found out I was a London Transport Tube train driver I was invited onto footplate and spent the entire time talking trains not much doing photography! By the time I arrived a lot of lines had been dieselised so missed many of the older loco's on show. Just one slight correction the Class 24 were actually designed for 45 lb rail though many of the branch lines were being upgraded at the time but as South West Africa was going to be where the majority of the 24s initial allocation then they had to be able to go on 45 lb rail. Great video, brings back lots of memories.
Muchisimas gracias por subir esto, es una JOYA, soy de Uruguay, hay cosas que jamas habiamos visto en video!
One of the few pieces of video of the Ganz 38 from Uruguay EDIT:Removed a wrong asumption after a correction in the answers
That is not correct, that locomotive wasnt running a train, but doing shunting...
@@MarceloBenoit-trenes Ok, I need to learn the timeline (also are we speaki g english for the sake of everybody else?)
I am 69 years old and still remember the good old railway days. The steam locomotives and then the electric ones. Excellent passenger service working with the busses. I used the train everyday for years. I was 11 kms inland and the railway was on the coast. Get up at 4 in the morning and take a bus to the station in Park Rynie and take the train to work in Durban. Same in the afternoon, Durban to Park Rynie by train and bus again to home in Umzinto. The best five years of my life. The trains were safe and the journey was one and a half hours. We were a group of four and played cards on the journey. Then came the Taxis and the busses disappeared and then the trains disappeared. Great job the ANC has done.
I grew up in Umzinto in the 60s.Used to travel by train from Park Rynie to Berea.Never ever thought this mode of transport would cease. Now it's these annoying taxis everywhere!!!.SMH
@faithnaidoo7647 thanks for the reply, I left Umzinto in 2000 and moved to Cape Town, been in Cape Town since. Visited Umzinto in October 24 and spent a week in Park Rynie. Umzinto is a hell hole today. I am so glad that I left.
This is great footage. Modeling 70s era railroads is always challenging because of the lack of prototype footage as great as this!
Great video, thanks for sharing. I have gone to Google Earth and tried to find some of the locations. There is not alot left. Donnybrook still has some tracks but I don't think they have been used in a long while. I was lucky enough to visit the Port Shepstone and Alfred County Railway in 1997 and this also appears to have gone after bridges were washed away by severe storms.
29:50 - this funicular is already history: it was closed in 2006, and was replaced by an aerial cablecar.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Great video!
Thanks!
Didn’t get to hear any of Guy’s narration on this video 😕 still great nonetheless
Yeah, the numbered videos are just raw captures from his original 16 mm reels. I also only have the description written on the box. His trip notes are currently missing.
Nice to see something new on the Valley as sad as it is in CR. Great stuff - thanks for sharing with us.
Glad you enjoyed it
The "C&S" on the sign early in the video is Colorado and Southern, a former CB&Q subsidiary that was maintained as a separate division of Burlington Northern until the early 1980's. C&S owned Fort Worth and Denver, another separate BN subsidiary. BN units belonging to C&S had three digit road numbers, not the usual four on BN units, and "C&S" above the number boards on each end of the unit. I worked in another ATSF - C&S joint yard in Denver (Rice Yard) in 1980 as a BN employee. The old heads I worked with wore Colorado and Southern belt buckles the size of dinner plates and still answered the phone "hello, Colorado and Southern".
I think my dad would have liked these videos if he were alive .He passed in 03 an was a conductor for NJ Transit but started at i belive conrail . I like the quite nature of these vids Until you tube crashes the silence with a hole adds . I dig the trains that look like they never had a wash since day one ..the old overgrown lands .The great era of old cars ...old cars on carrier trains is my favourite..seeing those old cars brand new is cool .
Thank you for all these videos. They are really awesome
You're very welcome!
Great video. I'm really enjoying those memories and also the ideas for 60s/70s DB train make-up. Cheers.
Nice shot of the chevy wrecker getting it done !
Just amazes me how the BN. management the the Milwaukee road hired. Drove that Railroad into the ground. And was allowed to abandon what 1200 miles of track. Like nothing. Even snow plows were left behind. All carefully ORCHESTRATED. BN got all of S.P. s container business hmmm
Excellent video. Brings back lots of memories from the days as a kid as my father worked for the railway and we travelled by train.
Quite a trip! Thankyou. Third unit is or was an Alco PB. Probably converted as someone else commented into a heater car. The original rooftop radiator fan has been removed. Thank you . I am enjoying all your videos .
As a South African rail fan… I ve boarded the Jhb to Musina shosholoza at Parkie, in my wits days.. L getting off at Polokwane. Last year I did the blue train… Pta to CT. Next year it’s Rovos for me. I love trains
GEA power wow
Look how clean the area was.... unlike today where everything is in ruin and full of litter etc.
Really good picture quality, nice to see old stuff
I can't get enough of watching these videos... how fantastic they are, what a shame they don't have sound . Guy, you can't imagine how important it can be for me to be able to see these films of those spectacular years for the railway, it's like being able to travel to the past, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all this contribution.
Glad you like them!
Thank you for this great video. I was lucky enough to have worked as fireman on many of the sections in the clip. I spent most of my steam years working out of Kimberley to Bloemfontein and also De Aar but my final years was working museum trains out of Mossel Bay and along the Knysna line. I also worked a few specials between Johannesburg and Mafiking in my earlier years. You brought back many memories, thanks for posting
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice video :)
Thanks!
This is a great video, such great memories of the South African Railways
Pure gold. I've seen these stations and sections after their destruction, and seeing them in their hayday is out of this world.
How interesting were USA in those years....
I love the look of the C 128's. And those 4-8-0 steam engines .oh yeah baby!
I loved seeing the old SA I grew up in and the railway I worked on and loved. ...It no longer exist, ....but equally, my hatred for those that engineered its downfall and destruction will never cease.
