How To Be A Good Conversation Partner To Someone Who Stutters
In this 2-minute video, we offer key advice for conversation partners of individuals who stutter. The focus is on fostering open communication by encouraging partners to ask the person who stutters how they prefer to converse. We emphasize that listening to one person who stutters might differ from another, so it's crucial to understand their unique preferences. The video encourages partners to be patient, empathetic, and understanding, while avoiding making the person feel pitied or uncomfortable. The overall message is to be open to learning about stuttering and to support the person in a way that respects their individuality.

    Natural speech is a pure imitation of a speaking model saying one whole meaningful word only. This game would have been helpful if the therapist modelled one word at a time instead of pushing the child to repeat phrases! Attempting to say everything at once is difficult and causes tension = stuttering.

    • @bethanyroche8927

      when you speak you tend to follow a rhythm so that your sentences don't feel broken or disjointed. Those with stutters may break up that rhythm so she's encouraging a smoother and more fluid pronunciation and allowing the child to recognise this in their own speech patterns.

      @@bethanyroche8927 Terms of sentences and phrases are for writing. When ordinary people speak, they say only one word at each present moment, then, the next one, and so on. This natural way of speaking is very simple and is called ADDITION:-)

      @livestutterfree I'm no expert so I appreciate your input but I do think rhythm is important in speech lmao in English we stress certain syllables rhythmically within the sentence and when that's disjointed the sentence can appear a little strange

    • @livestutterfree
      @livestutterfree 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@bethanyroche8927 Each word in any language has one (rarely, two - in longer or compound words) STANDARD emphasis or stress. It’s always the same for all speakers. So once we have learned to produce the MELODY of the word with our speech organ, it always produces this oral word in the same way - with the same stress. No need to focus on some abstract “rhythm”:-)

    Do you use the libcombe method for toddlers who stutter?

    • @granitebayspeech6479
      @granitebayspeech6479 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we use some of the therapy techniques that are included in the Lidcombe program. Just like the Lidcombe program, parents are trained by us to recognize their child’s stuttering symptoms and provide positive feedback to their child to diminish stuttering. Children who receive early intervention for stuttering often recover at 7-8 times more often than those who do not receive services. If there is a family history of stuttering it is especially important to receive guidance within the first 6-12 months of stuttering symptoms. Young children are aware and upset when they don’t have control of their communication skills. They often push and try to get the words out with tension when they are not taught more effective methods. Parents may inadvertently increase their child’s stuttering symptoms when they rely on ineffective advice received from well-intentioned individuals. The Lidcombe program along with many other stuttering programs was developed to provide guidance to therapists. Speech Language Pathologists often enroll in a variety of classes when they need additional training for stuttering. My training far exceeds any one training program. I teach therapists who want to learn from an expert. I have worked with stuttering since 1975 and I was fortunate enough to learn from the best professors in the field. If you're unsure if your therapist has the expertise in stuttering that you desire, please have them contact me and I will be happy to collaborate with them. You may continue seeing them and I will be a consultant to guide the process. If you prefer to receive assistance for stuttering at any age, I have been recognized as an expert locally, nationally and internationally for my high level of expertise. I don’t use any regimented programs because they never cover what every individual needs. There will always be modifications needed because we are individuals and don’t fit the mold of any one program. I use therapy techniques for your family member based on evidenced based research. It’s very important that families receive services from a professional who is capable and experienced in the field of stuttering and cluttering and will design a program to fit their family members individual needs.
