In the 1940s and ‘50s, I heard several songs about the land of Canaan. This morning I was trying without success to think of the titles of some of those songs. So I did a search on TH-cam and found several titles (see below), none of which I recognize from my childhood. I do think I remember some geography, however. If memory serves, Judea is mentioned in the Bible and it was part of a larger land area that had once been known as the land of the Canaanites. So why would there be more than a dozen songs about Canaan and none (to my knowledge) about Judea? There has been controversy about land in the Middle East for as long as I can remember. There doesn’t seem to be much question about whether the Nile River Delta is Egypt - and has been called that for thousands of years but, in the area described in popular media (in the United States) as Israel and Gaza, it seems that to use any of the popular names for the land of the Canaanites is to imply an opinion about who is “right” and who is “wrong” in the current phase of the conflict. I don’t think any of the antagonists in the current phase of the conflict are entirely in the right. So what name or names for the contested land area can be used without being understood as favoring one nation or ethnic group over another? Brenda Dickson's acting was over the top but you sure couldn't take your eyes off of her. What snarky line would Dickson's Jill deliver next? The character lost a LOT when Jess Walton started playing her. The problem with Y&R these days is it is just BORING. Everyone now is so reasonable. It needs a "scene chewing" bitch like Dickson's Jill to spice things up. Judith Chapman, who plays Gloria (and, ironically, filled in as Jill for a couple of episodes in the very late 80s when Walton was unavailable), has the ability to pull off scenes like this. Unfortunately, no Y&R writer in the past decade has had much use for Gloria. The show could really use some snarling between rival characters who had a deep dislike for each other. (Personally, I'd put Chapman under contract to heavily use Gloria and revive the bitter hatred between Gloria and Jack, letting that drive plots with scenes like these tossed in).
