I make videos about languages and Duolingo
The Very Dark Side of Duolingo
Duolingo isn’t just a language app. It’s a system designed to keep you hooked, control your behavior, and collect more data than you think. This isn’t about streaks or funny sentences-it’s about what’s really happening behind the green owl.

I went digging through Duolingo's course catalog expecting to find a hidden gem, but instead, I stumbled onto what might just be the worst course they've ever made. Haitian Creole is a vibrant and fascinating language, but Duolingo did it so cheap. From bizarre translations to laughable audio quality, this course is chaos. Czech is the most annoying language ever created (in europe). And the worst part, IT'S A MADE UP LANGUEGE BY THE "REVIVILIST". We could have been speaking German all this time, but no! Our ancestors wanted to torture us. Most people don't speak czech fluently until they gradueate HIGH SCHOOL (yes a fucking high school). And also, our school system is fucked up. It's like doing everything by the guidebook (you learn how to shoot a handhun), and then for exam, you have to shoot a taget 3000m away with a 10 kg sniperrifle while running. FUCK CZECH, FUCK CZECH GOVERMENT, FUCK NONEXISTENT CZECH HISTORY, FUCK EVERYTHIN ABOUT THIS COUNTRY [exept for the humor and creativity (OF FUCKING UP EVERYTHING GOOD)]
now imagine having THAT as your mother language 🥲
I was betting on navajo. wild of them to remove audio one unit in for a tonal language
nice jseš dobrej ale já jsem lepší

@@duo_bingo yeah, lazy...
And I assume that this was after the update.
As a Czechian i can say yeah we have to forget and Relearn our Gramar Every Second ☺
here’s the thing: no single duolingo course will take you to fluency alone; that’s what this video can be summed up as. learning a language takes immersion, repetition and a LOT of practice, and i don’t mean 30 minutes clicking buttons and saying short phrases on Duolingo. Take it from the guy who already speaks three languages and is learning French for a fourth, i don’t expect Duolingo to be my only resource but i do set my phone settings to French, listen to French music, watch French shows and movies, hell, even read a few articles and this is all just to get your brain used to the language. if you want to actually speak it, find someone who’s also learning it or find a fluent speaker. we live in a century where opportunities are left right and centre if you look in the right places: social media, discord, telegram, whatever you use if you don’t personally know anyone fluent or learning the language you want to learn. both Duolingo and textbooks alike will only get you so far so you have to really *immerse* yourself Edit: TL;DR if you want to learn a language, immerse yourself in it with text, music, shows, movies, and find a way to practice actually speaking it

0:10😂😂😂
On behalf of Czechia we are sorry :D especially the sentence at 2:16 is just evil... Though every single screen you showed was absolutely terrible and barely even a sentence. I think, and we tested this with multiple foreign friends, cases are hard but learnable. What is truly evil are cultural and regional references and multiple words with the same meaning but some are used in some context while not others. Perfect example is 2:16, both are right but without context it was impossible to guess correctly. Which is probably the takeaway, just speak it and it will work :) I think we are quite tolerant.
Ty bis nevěřil jak často se ti opije koza se psem na sreše
I've never heard anyone say “nejneobhospodářovávatelnějšími” (the most unmanageable) in my entire life. It's such an absurdly long word that anyone who actually used it would sound a bit ridiculous. :D It’s like saying “themostunmanageable” as a single word. :D
Strč prst skrz krk?🤭
I'm learning Esperanto on Duolingo right now. I find it so much better than learning foreign languages in the past by just reading a book, listening to an audio, a classroom with useless sentences for daily conversations.
chudáci češi
Hmmm... I would say something... Ale nechce se mě.(But I don't wanna...)
Fortunately my first language was Czech... It makes learning of any other Slavic language much easier for me...
czech here I love seing a video that describes my felings growing up
I'm a Dane and two of my friends are learning Danish through Duo Lingo. I just checked out the Danish lessons for a bit to see what their complaints were about and half the words are mispronounced, the cadence is wrong and a lot of the words are cut off. It sounds like half of it is using our 2000s text-to-speech model. That model was built on a male and female voice actor/audio book actor getting a huge of amount of sentences to read out spanning over most of the words in our dictionary and then the best pronounced words snipped out and fed to the text-to-speech vocabulary. That text-to-speech model was used in our public transport systems and phone lines for a while and is barely understandable for most Danes unless you already have an expectation or context of what is being said. The other half sounds like they got 2-4 interns somewhere to do the leftover sentences and they are speaking casual Danish (sounds like 2 from Copenhagen and 1 from Aarhus, two different Danish dialects, the last one I can't place) which is much much harder to learn than the already difficult formal Danish
Btw I lost all 5 hearts when doing the first lesson in "I can have basic conversations". I've been speaking this language for 28 years. I work in IT servicedesk. My job is to speak Danish every single day for 7+ hours across all our dialects with varying sound quality and noise pollution.
I am czech, yeah it's hard
