    I will accept no version save this. It was the perfect ending. A kind of "cleansing of the remaining evil" sequence. Coppola was nuts for listening to some confused journalists and removing it.

    Saw this ending at the movie theater. It was the best ending because it made no sense, yet neither did the war. It was a perfect ending. It was so captivating, no one got up to leave. We all just sat there stunned until the lights came on. The movie isn’t the same without this ending.

      @@WolfKing-dv6xdI saw the version with this ending in late August, 1979. As much as I've learned about the sordid politics of the Vietnam War since then, the inclusion of the Playboy Bunnies and the French plantation scenes in later versions were unnecessary wastes of time. The original version from 1979 played like a descent into a fever dream of madness. The basis of this film is supposedly the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I read HoD twice after it was an AP English assignment for both my millenial kids, read about four years apart. Comparing books to movies, or visa versa, doesn't work well for my enjoyment or understanding of either medium. The same is true in this case. Just as the original trilogy of Star Wars (Episodes IV-VI) is no longer available in a non-digital format, finding the Apocalypse Now version with this ending has been fruitless. Hope you have better luck than I've had locating it.

    • @Garfuck
      @Garfuck 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It made a lot of sense actually. Kurtz wrote in his memoires with a red pen "Drop the bomb, exterminate them all!" It's a mercy kill, because things are so fubar in his compound, that there's no way of fixing it or the people other than to end it all for good.

  • @TheTDTDT
    @TheTDTDT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was also ending on my 1991 laserdisk version. Made most sense to me as everyone was nuts there after Kurtz'cult of personality and committed great atrocities deserving to be taken out. Coppola has it wrong nowadays and in subsequent releases.

  • @vanessajazp6341
    @vanessajazp6341 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was how it ended in the original theatrical release. I remember it well. It was very disappointing and disturbing, in that it conveyed that Capt. Willard had allowed all those people to be “exterminated”, as Kurtz had written on that page. Had it just ended with Kurtz’s “The horror...”, it would’ve been perfect (in my opinion).

    • @TwoGraves284
      @TwoGraves284 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This isn't true. The reason that Francis Ford Coppola cut the credits was because he thought people would think this. The film ends with Willard turning off the radio and sailing away with Lance.

    Nice raked lines connote speed even sitting still. Very masculine looking too appropriately enough. These flew out of McGuire AFB in New Jersey in the '80s through Desert Storm. As they'd land the superheated roiled air in the wake of their passing remained turbulent to the point where it sounded like linen being ripped apart. It wasn't uncommon to see three or four elements of several F-4s in the air all at once. They made a distinctive, loud sound passing over.

      These are the end credits that showed on the 35mm theatrical release. Only the 70mm theatrical releases ended with no credits. Under contract, Coppola HAD to destroy the compound set in the Phillipines at the end of shooting. He and his family were out on a barge watching this. He decided to film the destruction using various cameras and infrared film and this is the result. I think it worked perfectly and left the question of "who called in the airstrike" up to the audience.
