Moment's Notice (John Coltrane)
I've been in love with John Coltrane since childhood. Heck, he's from Philly! It started with My Favorite Things on that soprano - McCoy's piano rhythm ECT.
My first album on Muse Records I included Moment's Notice. It's challenging because of that deceptive cadence. I have no idea how I came up with the crazy 11/4 (or 3,3,3,2) ending! but all the bands/people I played with over the years like it so it became part of my arrangement. This up tempo duo version with Bob Meashey was sure a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed playing it.

Footprints (Wayne Shorter)

What a great title "Footprints". Every artist would love to think they are leaving their footprints behind. This simple pseudo minor blues is always a favorite to play by jazz musicians at all levels. In this setting with Bob Meashey and I lends itself to much free exploration and metric modulations. An interactive duo setting is a great way to practice utilizing space and dynamics. Steve Giordano
All the Things You Are (Jerome Kern)

This is an excerpt from a little church concert I did with my great friend Bob Meashey. It's always an honor to make music with this wonderful musician. This Jerome Kern composition has been played, arranged, rearranged, transposed, recorded, by thousands (maybe millions) of jazz musicians over the years. It's one of those tunes that just evokes counterpoint improvisation an interaction. I must...

I was sitting on the couch and found this interesting tertian relationship C# F with open A string. The...

This is my special reharmonization of this spirited Christmas song. Although I have recorded this on my Jazz Christmas CD recording in the 90s, I wanted to do a special duet with Stephen DiBonaventura on banjo. The solo section is a custom designed and doesn't adhere to the form.

Damn, you guys! Just crazy awesome. Endless ideas and improvised harmonic creativity coupled with constantly shifting rhythms. Steve, you are one of those guys who has constantly and, unintentionally, evaded the radar. Ralph Towner comes to mind as another monster talent whom the world at large ignores. Doesn't matter - you know and players know. Just double dang dog, man. Be well.

Hi Glenn, I'm glad you are enjoying my work. An artist can ask for no more. "The 7th Planet" is more of an impressionistic piece of music. Over the years I have messed with improvisation but not verbatim over the form. What seemed to work best is interactive free improvisation that I've done in certain situations that connect back to the form somehow 🙂. If you send me your email I'll track down one of those versions and send it to you. Steve
