Fantastic Tom! Game development and music theory go completely over my head so I really liked the way that you emphasised how important it is to get some form of immersion if possible but definitely to study the history and culture that provides context for the music you are thinking of using. That example of "Orientalism" was a great way to demonstrate how easy it is to mix music from different cultures and end up with a bit of a mess that doesn't match with the region, history, and musicianship (and instruments) of a certain place you are trying to evoke or import into a "Western" video game. Overall, I found your talk really interesting - especially how you were able to spend time overseas and participate in local communities and cultures, make those connections, and provide an income stream and publicity for artists living in countries where, as you said, being a musician can be difficult. Really looking forward to following your work and your upcoming projects.

the creativity part really helped me in thinking of unique ideas! 10/10 tips very kewl edit: i forgot to mention that i really had a problem with only fixating on one idea and never knew that it could lead to other ideas dying, so yeah that's an amazing tip: not to focus on one idea

Interesting. IPONZ. Global copyrights. Interesting to me a few years ago there was an Iron Maiden building company in Christchurch, using the Maiden Font. Maiden have usually been really good about this, as it also promotes them. Also different market segment. But, once again. As the numbers get bigger. I weren't allowed to call my Company "Centra" as "Telstra" had it. Found away around it. Seems lawyers need to go back to literal. :) Funny IP lawyers so expensive? local and international, different bills to pay. Stairway to Heaven claim thrown out, but Led Zeppelin done for Ramble On. Sad, this can kill a good idea (quite often an improvement on the past), not specific to gaming industry. :) Berners Convention. US, has gone crazy, now outlives author way to long. Glad we have image search these days. Love the Patent trolls, then again Microsoft apparently has patents on "Apples" (The real thing). :) Greed versus fair use, versus just. They are thinking on re-writing US Copyright law as it is as old as the country and as we have learn't in the Information age, things change faster than the law can keep up. Pity no one here. :) No DMCA here, but Berner's. Funny we can't sign up to Human Rights act properly. Hence how we got our three strikes law with the internet. Something to do with N.Z. still being a company, not a nation. Funny Waitangi day here to remind us of this. Do your math first, Companies office help a lot, but have a get out of jail free card. :) Please would love to keep this space open. Sadly, no matter how good your idea and business this stuff can destroy you before you even get your first step. Be brave, but don't let it take everything from you. :( :) The biggest rule of law still "INTENT". To the presenters, thank you. Worked in Justice long enough, to see both sides of a discussion (Court of Appeal at the time). :) :(
