Most overrated QB in NFL history. He was the Joe Flacco of the 80s. A mediocre QB who won a Super Bowl because he was surrounded by highly talented people.

We’re hoping Fields will be the best….but it’s true 40 years have gone by and the Bears haven’t produced a better Quarterback than Jim McMahon.

I’m proud to say that I taught at Sylvandale Middle School in south San Jose - McMahon’s alma mater - in the late 1990s. It was down the street from Andrew Hill HS where Jim played as a freshman. The science teacher remembered Jim. Apparently he had broken into the school and started a fire in the science lab…the punky QB. I saw the yearbook from 1975-76 (if I remember correctly) in the school library and noted he and his brother John were listed in there.

I was privelaged to grow up watching McMahon rip through the WAC conference like a hot knife through butter. I had an uncle who taught at Wyoming University and so the family required my allegiance. We suffered many defeats to McMahon. The first time I really saw his winning no quit attitude was in the Holiday Bowl vs SMU 1980. With 8:39 left in the game, BYU facing a 4th & 1 down by 38-19, head coach LaVell Edwards sent out the punting unit. McMahon and the offense stayed on the field. Later he said, "I’m not going out and just giving up. I wouldn’t get off the field and I told the offense to huddle up. We had to burn a timeout because we wouldn’t come off the field." After explaining to coach Edwards his reasoning to push on, McMahon called a play at the line of scrimmage and found a wide-open Clay Brown to keep the drive moving. BYU capped off that series with a Scott Phillips touchdown run after a long and hard-fought 17 play, 90-yard drive. SMU, as they did all night, answered quickly, as Craig James popped off for a 42-yard touchdown to give the "Pony Express" a 45-25 lead. With only 3:58 remaining in the game perfection needed to happen for BYU to pull this off. McMahon then connected with Matt Braga on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 2:31 remaining to cut the SMU lead down to 14, 45-31. BYU then recovered the ensuing onside kick to give McMahon and the offense another drive at the 50-yard line. Three plays later, McMahon hit wide receiver Bill Davis down to the one-yard line to set up another Scott Phillips TD run. Could this really be happening? BYU then was successful on the two-point conversion to put the score at 45-39 with 1:57 remaining. After failing the onside kick the ball was on the 47 yard line of BYU. Could the BYU defense that had allowed 393 rushing yards between Eric Dickerson and Craig James hold them? It was asking alot, but the defense dug in. On first down, Kyle Whittingham sacked the SMU QB for a loss. On a 3rd & 8 with 1:06 remaining, Eric Dickerson took a pitch out and was cut down by the 5-foot-10, 175-pound defensive back, Bill Schoepfilin. He wasn’t done making plays. On his final snap as a BYU player Schoepfilin blocked SMU’s punt! The huge break they needed gave McMahon one last shot from the SMU 41-yard line with only 13 seconds left. McMahon was pressured and threw the ball out of the back of the end zone. Second down would turn out to be the final play of the game with only three seconds remaining. McMahon stated "I just said to my line, ‘give me a little extra time because it’s going to take these guys awhile to get down the field. One of you guys get in the end zone and catch this thing or tip it. But make sure you’re in the end zone.'” McMahon dropped back a good 10 yards to let his receivers get down the field, and he found the outstretched hands of his All-American wide receiver/tight end Clay Brown for the game-tying score!! At first there was confusion as to the catch but Clay came out of the pile with the ball. Kurt Gunther came in and kicked the extra point, and BYU had pulled off the miracle comeback, and McMahon would be on his way to the college football hall of fame and his never say die attitude lead him eventually into the NFL. I was thrilled to see him play for my favorite team in Chicago. To me, I think Jim McMahon is my favorite QB simply because I played the position and understand what it takes to be in his position. It takes more than an arm, you have to commit fully to be a leader, and a soldier with a never quit attitude but most importantly you have to have your offenses complete faith in your ability to lead them into the battle. This is what Jim will always be known for. A leader that never gave up and totally committed to his position for his teammates. The level he played at with the injuries, pain and sheer will and desire to continue for the love of the game, sets him apart in my mind. The Bears have had a few, Dick Butkus, Mike Ditka, Gale Sayers come to mind. They epitomize will and desire.

Man, he played when QB's got slam dunked about every play. The NFL needs to take care of these guys better - none of them should be hurting financially. QUIT PAYING QB's that aren't half the QB the old style QB's were and take care of all the guys that played when the NFL was the real deal. I can't imagine how he would be in today's soft game (compared to the NFL he played in back in the day). And fir the love if God, legalize cannabis across the nation. These NFL players need to have that instead of the damn pain pills.
