Giving a tiny codling an abseiling lesson
Two terrible sessions in a row in flat calm seas and neap tides.
The first was along the harbours of Fife, the second was off a deep water mark in East Lothian.
This session saw one small codling and how I release small fish safely from high above the water.

It’s not the reel, the mags, the rod, inside the tip, outside the tip or any of that at the moment for you. It’s your form that is hurting you. You are all right arm and no left arm. It should be the other way around. Left arm should lead the cast and finish the cast strongly and in full control throughout the cast. The path that your left hand and the rod tip is traveling through is completely incorrect. If you want to improve your distance check out Stevie’s explanation on your chopping of the cast. Until you get that down don’t worry about mags. Take it easy your form needs to look technically sound before you attempt to apply full power or even worry about backing off the mags. It’s a hard habit to break casting over the shoulder. The rod will bite you the harder you try. Slow down and get that rod tip to come around and not up and over the shoulder. It’s something I struggle with all the time as well. th-cam.com/video/kilQGlvuhYo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WHmzitVcCD1L6Yuk

The backswing on your casts is rather flat (parallel to the ground). Do you think it's possible to level out the power stroke that much with a high swing pendulum cast without the sinker hitting the ground?

@@dongle_dangler No, your cast doesn't look wrong by any means. You still coming off your heels also you seem to heave the lead with your body on the inswing instead of pushing out and away with your right hand to generate lead speed . Don't concentrate on distance your last cast was 5-6 seconds airtime which is good with full mags on your getting there just sort ya feet out good content 👍

Hi mate I really enjoyed the video and just hit the follow button 👍 Can u just recommend something very straight forward to you which I know will help with your situation with the back foot coming off the floor because I used to do the same thing. Try casting off the ground with a 45 degree tip to lead ratio but I would recommend that you don't look out at sea from the word go you need to be positioned looking away down the path towards the cars. If you position your body away from zero degrees (forwards) and rotate your body during the cast your rear foot will stay planted because you are rotating towards your front foot and this would make it impossible to lift your back foot. Try opening your legs around 2 ft and again this will make it neigh on impossible to lift the back foot. So from the start of the cast face 45 degrees away from the sea and during the cast which should be much slower. Get comfy and just practice turning your body as your pulling the rod around you and rotating your body position during the cast so at the end of the cast you will be looking forward. Try slowing down and that lead will be going much higher on the back swing and in turn the whole cast will compress the rod right down to the reel👍 Casting off the ground will sort your body position out (don't euro style just lay lead down 45 degrees with a drop to the spigot) I'd love to be able to show you in person but I bet you're a million miles from me on the north east coast 😅

Great Explantion at the start. Your initial set up could do a little tweaking. Using your right hand as the fulcrum (straight out), and pushing out with the left hand to create the swing. This will make it easier when releasing and using the hips to start the power of the cast rather than the arms. Steve Lewis the perfect example of this.

Great practice session mate! i have been training for close to a year now with my mate as well. My advice would be try to get rid of the "hop" in your cast . that actually reduces a lot of the power you can put out in your cast. My mate has the same bad habit as well. i kept telling him to think trying to get the rotation from the hip instead of thinking of trying to throw the lead out and let the rod do the work. Also concentrate using your left arm(pulling) instead of right(throwing). it might help you rid of the hopping. Hip rotation gives you tons of power to load the rod.
