Road to Hell - 71mi (Gravel Race) 2024
👉 Hey! SUBSCRIBE for free WATTS 👉 th-cam.com/channels/sr-SU_SAqjrzmu4kXIRfUQ.html
*10th overall and 2nd place in my age group*
Rode To HELL is a gravel bike race consisting of four distances: 100 Mile, 71 Mile, 41 Mile and 24 Mile. The race starts in Chelsea, MI, goes to Hell, MI (and back) for the 71 mi which is the distance I raced. A majority of the roads were gravel with smaller segments of paved road.
The race started with about a 10 minute neutral rollout to get the group through downtown Chelsea. After the neutral, we went onto gravel directly into a headwind. The headwind initially kept the group all together. Once we headed south for a bit and got into the rolling hills, the pace really picked up and eventually split the group into about a 15 person lead group. Two racers got off the front really early and were never seen again. The first couple hours were VERY punchy having me hit over a 1,000 watts a couple times as well as 900+ watts a few more times. This first 2/3's of the race was death by a thousand cuts! Eventually I blew up after about 2.3 hours and lost the lead group. Luckily as did someone else and we party paced it back to the finish for the last hour. We never saw anyone from the lead pack and nobody passed us.
This was a hard effort and likely my last race of the season. Which is good, as I'm ready both physically and mentally for the off season.

    What advice would give you us 50-60 yr. cyclists who want to train for this type of race, I.e. type and brand of bike, fitness, how you train yourself?

    • @mi-xc
      @mi-xc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bike: a gravel bike that can fit a minimum of 45mm tires. Personally I have a Trek Checkpoint. I have no complaints but there are many good bikes. Fitness: this comes down to volume. Building the amount of endurance/z2 hours you do weekly and monthly. Generally, the more volume you can do and recover from will be beneficial along with a couple days of high intensity workouts. How to train: structured training that periodizes your season. I’d recommend TrainerRoad. You can structure a Base, Build and Peak program spanning several months leading into a priority race. Structuring training in this manner will best prepare you. I’ve been with TrainerRoad for 7+ years, and although I’ve now altered my training to fit my needs, their approach has prepared me for years. I’ve seen huge improvements with their methodology and I’d recommend their “Master’s” programs.

    • @mi-xc
      @mi-xc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Best thing to do to improve stamina is to increase your weekly volume on the bike. Try to add in more volume by 1 hour of endurance each week. I don’t do anything off the bike except 2x strength training during winter (Base phase). I’m on a 2023 Scott Spark for XC.

    Great set up with the front, rear views and overlays. The best way to handle those situations is, that's racing, but certainly feels bad wondering what if. Good showing for when you were moving

      Thanks. It was my first mechanical in years of racing, so I was definitely overdue!

    Nice rip, dude! Jealous of that huge group you had most of the day! Opted for wave 2 and really never found a group of consistent riders. Nice work!

      Thanks. Yeah, the group got a little too big, but it’s better than being solo!

    Great video and race. The lilac woman was pretty good too. The accident 9:06 : I think something happened to the guy's brake. He kind of look at them as if it jammed on their own.

      Thanks. I redeemed myself this year (2024) and had a much better and safer race with no crashes!

    Yah, he did it once in front of you (over braking), and did it again at 5.6 miles. Something to consider about repeating behaviors.

      Yeah for sure. I learned my lesson and now I quickly try to avoid sketchy riders.
