Best budget spinning reels | UK Anglers Guide
More info: www.fishmag.co.uk/best-fishing-reels/
This is a guide to finding the best budget spinning reel, including a rough guide to reel sizes. It's a bit more complicated than the video makes out because there are exceptions. For instance, a 4000 size reel can be used on an inshore jigging rod that casts 150g if it's a high end reel built to tolerate heavier weights and bigger fish, but that's an uncommon use case so isn't mentioned here.

    I had a Savage gear SG2 in size 1000, the reels cosmetics weren’t that great. I guess it looked ok with a bit of pink braid on it. But the drag was near enough silent which was quite the let down really. However the line lay on the spool was near enough perfect which is the only good comment i have about the reel unfortunately. It generally got used for Lerfing in my local saltwater marina, it didn’t last even a full year. Its saltwater corrosion resistance is next to nothing. The bearing went inside of the actual reel body and caused the entire thing to seize up. As well as the fact that 70% of my casts were blocked by the stupid bail arm design (the bail arm was really thick metal and had a 90 degree bend near the line roller that caught the line if you cast without checking it. My okuma jaw 20 however… probably one of the best reels I’ve had, as well as my diawa ninja 18 LT (so good i got another one). I urge people to seriously re-consider buying the smaller sized SG2s. I can guarantee it’ll only lead to disappointment.

    can i use a size 3000 for pike fishing?

    • @borderlands6606
      @borderlands6606 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Short answer yes, of course you can. Longer answer still yes, with caveats. 3000 size reels come with small handles, which will compromise your cranking power if you get into a big fish. Another thing to remember is 3000 reels have small spools, which means thicker lines (12-25 lb mono, or 50 lb+ braid for pike) will come off in tight loops, limiting your casting distance. The clutch or drag washers will also be smaller, limiting resistance to the fish, though that shouldn't be a problem with any pike short of a record. People used to fish for pike with fixed spool reels that would be classed as 3000 size today, and caught plenty of them. Just a couple of weeks ago I landed a 12 lb pike that took the perch I was about to net, on a light quiver rod, 2500 reel and 4 lb line. If I was buying a pike reel I'd opt for 5000 or 6000 size, mainly for its potential to cast large dead baits, but would happily use a 3000 if that was what's available.

    • @AlpineRR26
      @AlpineRR26 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Either are fine. Everywhere says that 2500-3000 are good for bass. You can try to find if the company which makes the reels run small or large compared to others. Or you can check the carrying capacity for the weight line you use, for example if you use a little bit higher weight line then you should pick the 3000 if it carries more line yardage.

    People have so many options for what they can eat yet you choose to further deplete the only food of the local wildlife and compete with them for their only food source. Did you know 1000 seals have died of starvation in the last 5 months in Kaikoura? Just been on the news. Nice one mate you must be proud contributing to that.

    • @FISH_MAG
      @FISH_MAG ปีที่แล้ว

      Penn Pursuit 5000, it's big enough to balance on those rods and is a work horse. It's also a bit heavier than some other reels which will help balance with the heavier blank of your rod (up to 3oz is pretty heavy - a generalist sea fishing rod). Good luck! Reuben

      Great video guys! Quick question on reel maintenance, should I be taking my reel apart and doing any specific cleaning? I have the Abu Garcia cardinal reel, maybe 2 years old now and it’s started to jam up. I rinse it in fresh water every now and then after use. Maybe it’s time to try out a Penn..

    • @FISH_MAG
      @FISH_MAG ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattgenders81 it's a fairly controversial one - the reel companies say they don't want you to submerge them in fresh water, as it can actually cause salt on the exterior of the reel to get inside where it otherwise might not. I do it anyway if the reel has been splashed a lot or dunked, otherwise I don't. Grease is the answer rather than oil, applied to any gears you can get access to, with a small amount going a long way. WD40 makes things worse as of course it removes grease, but it's a common mistake to use that. However, it's easier to get it serviced by a company like felindreinnovations.co.uk/reel-servicing/. I had a chat with one of the guys there and they said they receive so many reels that have been taken apart and not put back together! (I think I've done that at least once!). Good luck whatever you decide!
