Alien: Isolation | A Love Letter to Alien
Alien: Isolation is one of 2014's best horror games. The studio, primarily known for strategy games, created this masterpiece that I've mentioned in many of my previous videos. Recently, Sega announced that Creative Assembly has started early development on an Alien: Isolation Sequel. In today's video, I revisit Alien: Isolation to show why it's a classic horror game, cover how Creative Assembly developed it, and discuss my hopes for the sequel.

    So I’m just going to preface this comment by saying that I’m not a game designer, nor do I critique games for a living or even as a hobby generally. I’m just someone who likes RE4 quite a bit, so I’m going to do my best to explain why the game succeeds in being great (of course in my opinion) despite many of your critiques which at times I do agree with. I’ll clarify which criticisms I agree with and which I don’t. *Artistic direction and atmosphere:* I think our definition of atmosphere is slightly different here. You’re operating off of the belief that atmosphere is contingent on the tension the gameplay creates. Me, and most others who praise RE4’s atmosphere, would describe it as a mood that is crafted through a bunch of intersecting factors. That can be artistic direction, music, audio, and gameplay. Most of these crafted moods aren’t scary, but effective regardless. The village for example utilizes the rural and cold, autumn aesthetic along with grotesque imagery to establish a sense of uneasy isolation from the outside world. This feeling is incredibly powerful and part of the reason why I believe the village is remembered so fondly. The Island is also underrated in this regard imho. The Island being a mix of a mining camp, military installation, and laboratory, topped off by its incredible soundtrack, lends it a Sci-Fi feel that remains just consistent enough with the previous locations in the game to belong. It really feels like the religious veil of Los Illuminados is peeled back and you see them for what they are in the Island and it’s great. I’m mixed on the castle, as I don’t think the devs really nailed down how they wanted it to feel. The Salazar statue and massive turret are most emblematic of my issues with the castles atmosphere/tone. *Bosses:* when it comes to QTE issues I’ve heard remastered ports of RE4 have bugged out most of the QTE’s, likely because of the higher framerate. This is especially noticeable for the button mashing QTE’s which are a pain in the ass to complete on newer ports. I’m unsure if the original Gamecube/PS2 releases still had issues with QTE’s not appearing at crucial points however. Would have to try out these ports to know for sure. Will also say this part of your review felt oddly short, wish you expanded on it and covered the boss fights in greater depth. *Gameplay:* I’m in agreement with RE4 both being too long and having fairly simple core gameplay. However what I think isn’t acknowledged in your review is how RE4 keeps player engagement despite that. Fundamentally RE4’s gameplay is just fun. It’s reactive, shots land exactly where you shoot, AI is balanced around movement well, gore is quite good, and kills are often rewarded with either ammo or treasure. This is a good base that is kept from going completely stale after the first few hours thanks to the many unique locations, setpieces, and bosses (even if these can be hit or miss), every chapter introducing new and more powerful weapon types, and the addicting loot system which ties back into progression. Generally if you’re falling back into the habit of using the exact same strategies against ganados the game will give you a new weapon to experiment with, throw the player into a setpiece that doesn’t let you play like you usually do, or outright introduces a new enemy type such as the Garrador, Novistador, Armadura, or Regenerador. Even when you’re on one of the tedious stretches of the game where it’s largely just the same ganado hordes in different flavors of hallways it always feels like you’re working towards something thanks to the loot system. This is why RE4 remains so engaging! However I will again admit that cutting down on the bloat in the castle and the final chapter would have overall benefitted the game significantly. I’m not as exhausted of the game as its detractors are by the end but it does begin to lose its steam even for me by the last stretch. *Remake is better:* Meh. I mean it’s a mixed bag for me. Holes in the story are patched, enemy variety is improved with the brutes, pacing is better, and I prefer how the castle has a consistent tone and vibe to it now, but I find the core gameplay to be far less addicting and the more interesting story aspects such as the background plot with Wesker, his revived Umbrella, and the Rival Organization are reduced to a massive degree. Krauser doesn’t even work for Wesker anymore! It’s less of a straight upgrade and just an equal reimagining in my opinion. So yeah, I like RE4, love it even. Sucks that you didn’t, but I’m glad you gave it a fair shake regardless.

    I really liked the deep dive into the game's production, it's cool cause we can see the passion and commitment that creative assembly had specially with how important it was for them to do a faithful adaptation of the alien universe. In this era of remakes and remasters I feel that most devs don't give enough attention the the source material and in turn they don't really understand why it was so popular. I'm definitely not thinking about any game in particular when I say this, no sir. Also Romulus is GOOD SHIT, it's up there with the first 2 films foe me, so like the first 2 films, romulus and alien isolation are all amazing and anyone with an interest in alien should probably check all of them out. Not only that but we're also getting an alien isolation sequel? damn it's a good time to be an alien fan.

    I don't agree with the idea that action horror does not exist, but aside from that I agree generally with a lot of what you said in this. I've always wondered if I was just crazy or smth, because I genuinely disliked RE4 so much on my first playthrough. From the tonal whiplash, to the awful dialogue and story, to the boring and dull color palette, to the bloated runtime, I just could not stand it. With that being said I do appreciate the fact that it is exists, without it we wouldn't have Dead Space, and so I can't entirely hate it for that. But it's good to know I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

      I knew the take action horror doesn't exist probably wouldn't go over well, but it's just hard to be scared when the game is entirely stacked in your favor. Other than that, I expected this video to be very divisive because it feels like everyone loves this game. I'm shocked everyone isn't like "bad video, bad take, kill yourself." Dead Space might be the only exception I have with action horror honestly. I still need to play the game!

    • @sprspr-w8r
      @sprspr-w8r วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DogmasDomain horror can come in many forms, and for me it isn't necessarily defined by how scary it is in a jumpy/panicky sorta way. For me, if a game has an eerie or unnerving tone, terrifying themes and concepts, or horrific and messed up imagery, that's enough to make it a horror game for me. Of course there can be tension breakers but in RE4's case it's worse than say DOOM 3 where you're just shooting up a bunch of demons with normal guns which is somewhat more believable along with the fact that game's tone is overall a lot more serious, whereas in RE4 you're drop-kicking people followed by someone spouting cringe one-liners. Also yes, Dead Space is another perfect example of action horror. The Necromorphs are 10x more terrifying than the goofy ass Ganados.

I’ve also played it on the Wii and the Xbox One. It’s a stone cold classic, but I feel like your critiques are super fair and come from a place of genuine preference instead of ignorance 😂 It’s always best to critique a piece of art for what it is vice what you wish it were. And if you do that, and it still doesn’t measure up, then that’s all there is to it!

    You're not in the minority. I may enjoy RE4 and RE4 Remake as a standalone game but I never considered them RE games. Code: Veronica X was setting up an epic clash with Umbrella and Claire potentially finding Steve Burnside alive only for RE4 to drop those plot threads in favor of a drastically different direction without wrapping those plot threads. Umbrella going under due to bad stocks off-screen in an opening narration? LAME! And we STILL haven't gotten closure for Code: Veronica X opening the door to Steve being still alive or not. I mean, we SEE Claire post-CVX twice in Degeneration and Revelations 2 and while in Rev2 she quotes and references Steve, we don't se her looking for him for closure. It's like Capcom wants to pretend Code: Veronica never existed despite it being a pivotal installment in the series. It gave us Chris & Claire together, it brought back Albert Wesker the one-note villain as a bigger and worse threat than before and it was meant t be the 1st of a trilogy that never got made. RE4 dropped ALL of this for Capcom's new direction and that to me is when RE lost it's plot.

    • @Fedor_Kisliakov
      @Fedor_Kisliakov 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DogmasDomain Because despite not having huge enemy variety, the game still does a good job of mixing and matching different ganado variations. You can have armored guys, shield guys, axe throwing guys plus some plagas in the same room. Most of the arenas are unique and provide intetesting ways to deal with threats by allowing vertical mobility, environmental interactions, etc. Or the gane gives you a nice set piece. Inability to move and shoot, while somewhat limiting, also provides a lot of tactical engagement with your positioning. Technically, enemy hitboxes and hit detection are also extremely well-tuned to the tank controls and movement. Not to mention RE4 uniquely blends beat'em up and gunplay mechanics. In fact, the game is so well tuned that you can beat it without using the merchant, and you'd still get a great experience for 95% of the time. In fact, playing like it puts a lot of pressure on your resources and forces you to really engage with the game on a mechanical level. P.S. Why are you using guns against Krauser? Your knife is OP against him and interrupts all of his attacks.

    • @DogmasDomain
      @DogmasDomain 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There aren't enough Ganados to last the entire run time. Armor doesn't fundamentally change the way you engage with them especially when you reach the island. If they're wearing helmets, you simply shoot at the knee. And shields get penetrated after one shot. Sure, there's enemy variety, but that doesn't fundamentally change the way you approach fights. Regarding the positioning, yes, you have to stop and reload, but that's where positioning runs its course. I've never contemplated where I would start an engagement because the entire game is so stacked in your favor with QTEs, shooting, and your myriad of weapons. I do agree some of the battle arenas can be interesting as players can vertically move for fighting, but there's enough level variety to last this game's runtime. As you said, all of this is highly subjective and it's not my cup of tea. I'm happy people love this game and I'm happy it exists because it improved the gaming medium so much. And I'm aware you're supposed to use a knife with Krauser. I was just bored out of my mind lol.

Personally, as a huge RE fan since 1998, I was glad for the changes but expected RE5 to take advantage of the new love and mix more horror with the action like they eventually did with Lost in Nightmares. Fixed Camera owes it's existence thanks to Alone in the Dark (1992), the true originator. Resident Evil (1996) simply popularized and perfected it on wards. 3rd person OTS already existed before RE4 and became popular thanks to 2 games from 2001... Max Payne and GTA 3. Splinter Cell (2002) showcased 3rd Person aiming that RE4 would adapt itself, so overall I think RE4 (2005) just helped innovate and revolutionized what most modern 3rd person OTS games are showcasing now.

      Mikami stated that the camera for RE4 was chosen simply because it suited its gameplay the best. They were not planning on inventing anything with it. It took on a life of its own in terms of popularity. What matters with RE4 is its unique blendness of elements from beat'em ups and gunplay, with location-based damage that put enemies in specific animations. No one did that before, and no one did it since. Sure, there were games after where enemies react to shots in different body parts, but like this. Say, in Max Payne 3, you can shoot legs or arms, but why do it unless the enemy is wearing armor and helmet? In RE4, the animation you put enemies due to differently placed shot is essential for the gameflow. You see someone throwing weapons at you? Shoot him in the leg, and then in the torso to drop him in the ground. Enemy has a dangerous weapon? Shoot him in the arm to make him drop it. Shoot them in the head for a devastating crowd control kick, but be sure you can reach him without getting hit by others. It is all enhanced by your inability too move and shoot or reload at the same time. You have to assess and plan your positioning every time. That is why this game is unique and engaging. Camera has nothing to do with RE4's legacy as a game. Other games started using it more often, but they never replicated the gameplay, only surface level stuff like enemy dropping resources and weapon upgrades. RE Village is guilty of that

Though resident evil on the GameCube was a terrible idea. The GameCubes ownership was small and they weren’t the type to by a resident evil title in that era .. I always try in love re4 but every time I play it by the castle I feel I’m just fuking done. I’ve killed what feels like a 1000 enemies ( Im missing puzzles n actually avoiding combat etc) and then they start shooting back more in more. I’m like WTF Is this? I’ve killed a full battalion solo I’m not scared I like the remake a tiny bit better because there’s actually a big emphasis on stealth kills in stealth in its play.. if you watch the remake speed runs it’s basically a different game

It wasn't majorly under performing but it wasn't really growing either. I think all you problems with RE4 are completely fair tbh I never once thought any of your criticisms were unfair. I think it's just all about preference in. The reason RE4 is hailed as one of the best games of all time is because of just how revolutionary it was at the time and the lasting impact it's clearly had on a lot of video games DNA. I think the game has aged pretty well but you can clearly see where future games made improvements on the formula Like Dead Space for example. RE4 was a complete risk at the time and the fact it paid off in the end makes me quite sad that a lot of games are now too formulaic and samey.

    I think the remake is a great fun game but it's not better than the og. The remake is way more of an action game than og. RE4 is the game Capcom has been wanting to make since RE2. RE4 has no atmosphere? Wow. Horror Action does exist. RE4 is proof of that. The game is 3/4 horror. The last half of the island is the only pure action. 15 Hour run time? Nobody is finishing this game that long. MAYBE 10hours. This is the first review I've heard someone say they got bored. That's a you problem (with all due respect). My guy I think ur just bad at the game and didn't want to engage with it. @@DogmasDomainyou might be able to suplex your way out of it if the enemy density and variety was as sparse as the previous titles, but that’s just not the case in either version of re4. the horror comes in the brutal and gory enemies, and the immensely oppressive feeling of constantly worrying about when the next fight will occur and whether you’re prepared. this feeling is amplified on professional difficulty and is honestly the best way to play the game by far. and i’ve got to agree with the OP that a play through should not be taking 15 hours.

You can’t even use the argument of “for its time it’s great,” because it just doesn’t work. By the time resident evil 4 came out we already lived in a world with max payne, an amazing 3rd person shooter. So as a game, it doesn’t work well as a third person shooter, releasing outdated. While also not making up for that fact through scares, which are nonexistent.

    Interesting take for sure I think I finished this game 4 times, professional mode included, just as a heads up. I mostly agree but I don't dislike RE4 as much, I think it's fine and I like replaying the village portion of the game but then there's the castle, oh boy the castle, so by far the biggest issue with this game is how bloated it is. The island and village are fine but the castle is soooooooooo long. I think the remake in this game is a big step up, because it solves the biggest problem with the size and pace of the game, and the repetitve and boring enemy encounters, in short I think it's simply much more fun to play, but the remake loses a feel things like the silly and campy cutscenes which some ppl may prefer, and most importatly the soundtrack. I do like RE5 a lot though, that game was a much better execution of the over the top action that RE4 introduced. Anyway I don't have much to add here tbh. Love the random ubisoft burn though.

    You kind of missed the point with Jonathan and the different worlds. The different worlds were the different futures Akira and the boy (who was a past incarnation of Flynn) caused, as seen in Apocalypse. Blasted tokyo is the Law ending Akira and the boy caused, Infernal tokyo is the chaos ending, and the tokyo of the original world is the neutral ending they got. Also, Jonathan DID hesitate several times. When Jonathan hears that God caused blasted Tokyo to happen, he is shocked, but agrees that they need to fight against God. Additionally, Jonathan had been generally friendly or neutral around the people of Tokyo, only getting angry when the ashura kai hold a fellow samurai hostage. The only time he calls anyone "filth" is when he becomes merkabah and fuses with the archangels. Before that, Jonathan was open to new ideas, and you could tell in his expressions in the Law ending that he knew deep down that what he was doing was wrong.

      A lot of comments filled me in on some context here. And yeah, Jonathan is shocked with god's action in infernal tokyo, but he still blindly follows his actions. I also don't think he over truly gave the people of Tokyo a fair shake either since he holds Mikado's values so highly. It's evident throughout the game he's more than okay keeping distance between him and them, and that he clearly values his Samurai and the Mikado's citizens lives more than the Tokyo citizens.

    I disagree with the analysis of smirk and minotaur. First, talking about minotaur. Matador requires a certain amount of grinding, just like minotaur. As well, his "attack buff" is just charge, the phys version of concentrate. Minotaur is a test of your buff skills, and your stat allocation. Smirk has a greater chance if occurring with a higher luck stat, making luck useful for what feels like the first time in the series. Smirk also doesn't just give crit chance, it's a tarukaja-like buff. So healing outside of diarahan and salvation have greater effect, since those get buffed through attack buffs as well. I agree smirk received a bit of a change for the better in smt4A, but the basis of the system doesn't change.

    • @DogmasDomain
      @DogmasDomain หลายเดือนก่อน

      So taking it from the top, smirk is an awful mechanic. Adding more RNG into system baked in RNG is bad. Sure, you can use luck to increase the likelihood, but that's a knowledge check. I'd wager most people don't invest their stats into luck on their first run. Regarding Minotaur, I hear what you're saying, but you can literally beat Matador using a plethora of strategies. With the Minotaur, it's literally buff, heal, and pray you get smirk and he doesn't. This decision making and overall design are nowhere near as interesting as the modular approach Matador allows.

    • @treyatkinson7564
      @treyatkinson7564 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @DogmasDomain yet matador STILL requires everything you just stated: you need to buff, debuff, and heal for a chance to beat him. With that argument, I'm sorry, but it's a preference. You prefer Matador with his higher strength and agility, or you prefer minotaur with his high strength and defense. They are testing two different styles of fights. In my first run of smt4, i never put the game down. Minotaur was challenging, but i knew if i built a solid team, i could beat him. I put nocturne on the shelf for almost 2 years because of Matador. Smirk is explained well enough in the opening hours for a beginner's understanding, and in every RNG heavy video game luck stats are understood by almost everyone that luck= better chances of good stuff happening for you. As well, you and i are well versed in SMT games, but the average newcomer who hasn't played an Atlus title with these stats, the stats have a break down in your first level up, for you to understand them and how to use them. You gain the knowledge right there. Smirk definitely needed some adjustments, i won't argue against that. The retooling occurred in 4A, after all, and the systems all work better. However, a more unbalanced mechanic in Nocturne, as much as i finally was able to enjoy it and appreciate it after shelving it, was beast eye and dragon eye. It weighed more heavily against a player, and could lead to a one turn K.O. within a matter of minutes if the AI decided to play dirty. I understand you loved Nocturne, and i appreciate that game for everything it did for the series, but it has a lot of kinks that games like DDS and SMT4 refined with the combat. Nocturne does still have one of the greatest atmospheres devised, in my opinion, but argument for argument, Matador was and still is an RNG and grinding fight, no matter the strategy. You still need to be a certain level, have the right demons, ans the right magatama. And even that doesn't guarantee victory, just like minotaur, minus the magatama.

The reason I have him higher up is because you can find demons that nullify his wind, a magatama, numerous fusions, buffs, or a hybrid of them all. With Minotaur, even on repeat runs, I've found myself buffing and all for smirk to ruin it. Minotaur teaches you the importance of buffing and obviously striking weakness. Granting the player another turn should be reason enough, but it's not and it goes both ways. I think prefer Matador because he's a better RPG boss allowing players to create a solution on their own instead of the "buff or die" philosophy the Minotaur has. It's quick to the point and doesn't waste time with silly and outright dumb skits/bits aimed towards a teenage-aged audience, like so many other youtubers. I completely agree on so many things, specially the atmosphere. I think they were aiming towards the feel of a desolated post-apocalyptic Tokyo, like the Vortex World, but i never truly felt "opressed" like i did on pretty much every mainline SMT title. Maybe it's just the nature of getting rid of the random encounters, but i never felt in danger, or fighting for my life in this hostile world filled with odd, strange creatures. The world felt, for better or worse, like my playground, ready to be conquered at any given moment, and i'm not so sure if that was truly the feel they were trying to accomplish, given that some dialogues and sidequests clearly deviates to the opposite direction, that is, the Netherworld is supposed to be an incredibly dangerous place for humans and demons alike. Incidentally, the whole "Tokyo is dead, but not really" and going back and forth between the netherworld and the "real" world never really worked for me. Still, it's a game that i adore. I fully respect they way they managed to make an open field type of design being engaging, instead of mindless padding things with filler, a common place in open world games.

      @@DogmasDomain I liked the Demon Haunt, but i totally understand and agree with your criticism. It's true that they put many different forms of customization, with Essences, Grimoires, Sutras and Balms, to the point where you can breeze through the game (on normal mode, at least) without making as many fusions as you normally would have to. So, you can have your favorite demon partners throughout the entire game; but it does rub the player in the wrong direction in some respects. I will admit, i kept so many "useless" demons with me, just because i couldn't bring myself to fuse them, and the Haunt was partially to blame. Even so, it is definitely something i'd like to see in future titles, something they can expand upon.
