    I discovered your channel a few days ago and I've been binge watching your videos! Kudos for doing consulting for 5 years and being a manager almost SM! I worked at the Big 4 in their government consulting practice for 4 years before leaving for a smaller government contracting business. I appreciate that now my job is a standard 9-5 and that I'm not responsible for sales. And it gives me more time for my personal passion project (developing a team building card game for consultants!)

    A role title isn't important, it's what you want to achieve and the outcomes you want to drive personally that are important. We often learn that who we want to be is at odds with what we want to be when we undertake roles. None of it is wasted. They are lessons on this journey of life. Don't forget you're awesome ❤

    Unless 'Consulting Charlie' knows something I don't know, about HBO's John Oliver, which indeed she may, I noticed she had several times mentioned something that, if visual, would have caught my eye. Actually, it would have caught both eyes. As I do extremely love comedy as well as making light-hearted comments about the comedian, should they make a gaff, such as laughing at their own joke or not being able to hold a straight face throughout the punchline. This, of course, increases the humoresque quality of the comedian, as well as, points out that like everyone else, makes the occasional verbal faux pas (which I have injected my own term of - 'verbal typo', as I have found many people do not seem to understand the meaning of - 'faux pas'). I digress. As it may be that Ms. 'Consulting Charlie' may indeed be throwing her own slight of hand into the comedy ring, maybe just to see if anyone actually TRULY listened to her. I, for one, did. Even if it wasn't intentional, which I am trending on the idea she did. If so, 'Consulting Charlie', I thank you. Why do I belief I am correct? That is the easiest part. Here is that summation: Anyone who is a consultant who is worth their salt, and she sounds as if she is, and has the bona fides to prove as much, she most probably would not have made the SAME faux pas several times. So, what was this comedic thrust she did several times toward the "Last Week Tonight's" host, John Oliver? She referred to him as "James Oliver".

    I agree with you on progression but having worked at other consultancies, the ‘support’ is essentially non existent when taking stretch roles because no one has time, absolutely everything is outcome focused in my experience.

    I'm enjoying consulting because I have no responsibilities in life outside of work. I do feel though that it's much more difficult when you have a partner or a child. I know a senior MD that sees their kids two weeks a year cause of their insane workload. I don't know how they do it

    • @consultingcharlie6044
      @consultingcharlie6044 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% agree - some people do make it work but IMO they're in a minority (or magicians...)

  • @stretchoxford7835
    @stretchoxford7835 ปีที่แล้ว

    Congratulations on your new role and change in circumstances. Your rationale does seem to lend credence to the view that consulting is a profitable business mainly because it can pay 1 FTE to get 1.5 FTE's worth of work, and this is not a sustainable approach; this means that bright young people are mashed through the machine, taken advantage of and the majority either leave or are let go - those who climb the ranks are those willing to sacrifice their health and personal life to work the longer hours required and onboard more bright young things to burn through. Any decent employer, with a view to the long term, would want to keep hold of as many experienced staff as possible and support them through life up and downs so that they get an 'average of 1 FTE's worth of work out of them across their employment. Taking the opposite approach means that consultancy will continue to be a superficial industry, dealing with the 'obvious' and charging to add quick resource to overstretched companies in times of strain. If the 1980s consulting mantra of cutting back to the bare bones the number of staff needed to perform a given task, there would be more staff to provide resilience and extra capacity in those times of strain.

    • @consultingcharlie6044
      @consultingcharlie6044 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% agree that people end pushing out 1.5 FTE productivity, I also agree it's not a sustainable career in the long term for most people. I do see people who make it work but I think they're in a minority. However, I do think it can be a really great accelerator for people with the right circumstances at that particular time

    • @letscirclebackgames
      @letscirclebackgames 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I used to work in Big 4 consulting and I agree it was like doing 1.5 FTEs worth of work! It was hard to articulate back then but it felt like mentally it was just a lottt to think about

Why would a top data scientist join the firm, if he want to go for pay rise/ promo he’ll get bs, “ did great work, but not enoguh internal work😂😂”- quits to work for google
