My Early Action Story: What I Learned After Getting Rejected from MIT
Getting rejected from MIT in Early Action and Columbia in Early Decision was a tough pill to swallow, but it taught me some critical lessons about the college application process as an international student.
🥲 I applied to only 8 colleges in my Early Round..
ED to Columbia and EA to these colleges:
MIT, Macalester, Reed, UChicago, URichmond, Wooster, & St Olaf.
I didn't get all rejections however.
So, yeah, I guess thora profile thik thak hi tha!
Well... I did record the college reaction of MIT, but somehow my SD card went haywire and it's gone... 😅
Basically, in this video, I share my realizations from these experiences-lessons that go far beyond just admissions outcomes.
One of the biggest takeaways for me was understanding the importance of EFC (Expected Family Contribution) and how it plays a pivotal role in financial aid decisions for international students.
Many top-tier universities like Columbia, URichmond and UChicago assess your financial need differently, and as an international applicant, it’s crucial to know how this can impact your chances.
Another realization I had was that rejection doesn’t have to mean failure. In fact, it can be a powerful redirection. After being rejected by two of my dream schools, I realized the importance of reflection and improvement.
I went back to my application, pinpointed areas where I could have been stronger, and re-applied with a clearer sense of direction and renewed hope. If you’re an international student facing similar challenges, this video is here to remind you that it’s okay to feel disappointed, but it’s more important to keep going.
And yes... if you are an international student like me...
Then, I hope that you will get accepted to your dream school as well.
AMEN!

keep grinding mate, as for me i never really got a chance to study abroad for my undergrad or even apply to them because of financials and i never gave a thought about the same. Now im planning to study masters abroad , can you please make a roadmap on how to get selected for t20 schools graduate admissions? i know that you are in class 12 par i think your channel might be helpful as some sort so :). I have tried searching for so many channels and yours is more relatable as of now
@@notsteppenwolf sure sure bhaiya, thanks a lot for this comment. The main reason why you feel my videos are relatable because I'm going through these things myself. Ummm however I will definitely do a graduate guide in the future.
@@notsteppenwolf Btw use my AI bhaiya (spoiler... This is for my next released videos, but I'm sharing this to you now): tinyurl.com/CollegeAssistantGPT This might help for PGs as well! It's free to use.
The story's moral: If you have been rejected, don't give up and apply next year! Build a stronger Resume/CV that can include new/relatable work experience and skills. Also, getting into an elite/IVY League university with a lower GPA and decent admissions profile is still possible. In Sayak's case, the college/admissions committee could not understand his character, how he fits into the institution, and what impact he would leave after graduating. College/university admissions are more than numbers and statistics on paper; instead, it is a holistic process that may also involve luck.
You are right! Build a strong resume, and yup... That's the thing. I really appreciate your long comments! Let's see what happens in RD!
Please don't waste your time applying for aid through FAFSA or any other state aid programs if you are an international student! You are NOT eligible for any federal or state financial aid. Also, Sayak, why are you discussing EFC (Expected Family Contribution)? You're an international student and should not have filled out FAFSA or any other state aid form. Was this question asked in your application? Also, to correct you, a higher EFC means you can receive little to no financial aid. A lower EFC means you can receive a more complete financial assistance package from the university you're applying to. Please don't lie about your EFC on your admissions or any additional aid application!
@@mohammadrahman4858 na na buddy, see for international students, we have to fill up the CSS PROFILE and the IFSAA or IFASA depending on the college. And there they clearly mention, how much are we expected to pay the college every year. Basically that's the thing. And yes, need based universities are going to look on the EFC before they think you're the right fit.
As a native of the United States and has attended New York University (NYU), I can tell you that major universities across the United States are biased on financial aid, but there is a slight misconception. Yes, international students are not eligible for federal or state financial assistance due to residency status. However, it can be said that the United States will always give the benefit of the doubt to its citizens and permanent residents first, regardless of their financial situation. This can be said about many colleges/universities across the globe, where locals prefer to be admitted to their own country. When you intend to apply to a university in the United States, most international students end up paying for their education out-of-pocket, given the lack of financial assistance from the United States. This is where the bias kicks in, as many here assume that all international students can afford to pay for their education when that's not the case.
It is definitely a sad reality of the situation. 😢 And yes... Need based financial aid (I'm not talking about federal aid particularly) is actually provided to international students. And yup, we have a crazy margin of getting in. Like let's say Bowdoin... Normal acpt rate is around 4% but for the same international students, if you check their CDS, you'll see they only accepted around 73 international students and they provide 100% need based aid with an average package of $69240. So yup that's the thing
Btw did you know that there are 120+ need blind schools in US and only 11 schools which are need blind for international students ONLY.

Bhai focus on winning the international Olympiad gold medal. Or winning the ISEF. Start early. You'll complete the 10th in March. Start a LOT early for the NSEC, NSEP, NSEA or like NSEB. Pick one. Don't pick all 4. IOQM isn't something I would recommend because it takes a lot more than just hard work. And yup... That's all. You will only get one attempt. In class 11, Nov. You can't afford to lose it. Prepare hard and may the Force be with you 😊

See tbh if you have the money, I always recommend going for 5APs because that way you can get the highest AP awards.
