    I am waiting for the key limes on my one thorned key lime tree to get more ripe before i pluck anymore. I got a young fruit off it a few weeks ago about the size of my thumb and wow very lime, made my lips tingly. lol

      When I harvest the rest I plan to juice most of them and use for Limeade. Last year I had enough lemon and lime juice to even freeze some to use later.

    why do some fruit have that nub and others don’t?

    • @tdhomestead
      @tdhomestead 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't know why that is but there can definitely be some variation in size and shape of fruit, I have harvested meyer lemons that are as round as oranges and others that have the more classic lemon shape from the same tree.

      The only trees that I have propagated myself are rooted cuttings. The grafted trees I have were purchased from different nurseries and are in a few different rootstocks; US-897, Rich 16-6, C-32, US-802, Flying Dragon, and couple that I am unsure of what they are.

    Great collection of trees. I am also in SE carolina and was wondering what you do in the winter with your container citrus? Do you move them into a greenhouse and keep them there all winter, or do you move them outside on warm winter days? I moved my citrus in and out during winter, but had a lot of defoliation. Trying to figure out how to best prevent defoliation.

    • @tdhomestead
      @tdhomestead 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have been moving them in and out in the earlier part of the season but once winter fully hits I pretty much leave them in the greenhouse until the spring unless we end up with an extended period of warmer weather.

    I’m over in Wake County. I have a 2 yr old Satsuma Mandarin. Should I plant outside this Fall? Or keep it in the pot and over winter it in our garage?

    • @tdhomestead
      @tdhomestead 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would probably keep in garage for the winter and wait until spring to plant in ground to give it a little time to establish in ground before having to deal with the colder temps. I still do not have my owari satsuma planted in ground. I did plant a changsha mandarin and a ten degree tangerine which are supposed to be a little more cold hardy than owari satsuma. Depending on how those do I will likely try planting one of my satsumas in griund in the spring.

    I dont know where all the white flies are coming from this year. Filling every yellow trap I put out. I bought a 10 inch x 30' Yellow sticky trap and put pieces near the tomatoes before tapping the plants and letting the cloud of flies land on the tape. I'm getting tomatoes, but the plants are clearly not as healthy as they should be.

  • @KristyW72
    @KristyW72 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Do you do any hand pollination? The reason I ask is I had no bee's this year. My citrus trees were full of flowers and started to have fruit. Then everything dropped off. I'm thinking it had to do with no bee's.

    • @tdhomestead
      @tdhomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't done any hand pollinating. We have had plenty of bees, mostly carpenter bees. Usually 90% or more of the fruit will drop from my citrus trees and the first time some of them bloomed all of the fruit dropped. Getting on a regular fertilizing schedule seems to help.

  • @KristyW72
    @KristyW72 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So what are you doing with the cuttings once you get em in the cup?

    • @tdhomestead
      @tdhomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      just keep them watered so the soil doesn't dry out, i will usually put them on a dish or another cup and try to keep them sitting in about a quarter inch of water until they show signs of new growth .. this time of year you will also need to make sure they don't get too much intense direct sunlight. You can build a terrarium/ humidity dome with a clear plastic bag and you won't have to be quite as diligent about checking the moisture but I haven't found it to be necessary;
