Dr G's ADHD Chat is all about ADHD from the perspective of a Clinical Psychologist and father of an ADHD adult. Focus is on families with ADHD children and adults adapting to their own ADHD. Dr G is an experienced clinician and parent, and will help ADHDers separate facts from fluff about ADHD.

I have noticed that your live streams have much less views then the regular videos. They are also harder to find. I am wondering the the TH-cam “prefers” the videos and so it’s better for your statistics🤷🏻♀️ sorry if this advise is unwanted ☺️
Thank you for your content, very appreciated! I would like to suggest the topic that scares the hell out of me. ADHD and the substance abuse. I think my kids are still too small (the oldest ADHD-er is 11) but I want to be prepared and maybe do something now in order to avoid it in the future!
Sir please help me, I am a total failure with many issues. Please help me
the moment I wake up, I feel the existential crisis. every time I see a thin person, every time I do an action, every time I see a feelgood video - my mind either forces me to imagine negative like something bad happening with the people involved in the video or the existential crisis thing. everything seems pointless. once a bright student, now working in logistics at the bottom of the hierarchy for livelihood. my father died 10 months ago and i haven't cried once nor do I feel anything about it. but quite often I am constantly flooded with the thoughts of this fact that I haven't cried or felt anything about the death of a person who sacrificed everything for me. living as though yesterday didnt exist and tomorrow doesnt exist. this moment passes. cant find the words to say that i want to say. i dont know. \ pls make a video about this.
I’m 1 month off of it and my adhd is worse then it was for sure I feel like I’m losing my mind I have depression, anxiety and being sober and not having dopamine IS HELL I DONT DO ANYTHING. lost my job because I quit and I ruined my car driving and I’m homeless living at my buddy’s so I’m at rock bottom and quitting weed WITH adhd so it’s literally like eating for the day to end and wake up wanting it to end again it’s so messed up.
i think there was a mic issue. theres no audio.
You're right. We've been having some trouble with his. Thought we'd fixed it. I will redo this show later this evening.
@@terrygingras6169 thank you
What do you do you do when the child has a temper tantrum and throwing things and won't stay in his room because he is not getting his way with something?
what are these changes and accommodations i can make to make life easier for myself if i have just gotten my adhd diagnosis at 35 yrs old?
Post menopausal woman diagnosed at 59 started my meds 4 months ago saved my life
Thank so much
So hard to find ADHD entrepreneurship content
I'll be glad to add more entrepreneurial content if you like.
So tons of adhd people can get their crap together, and most without medication… So I’m just trash😂 got it!!😜
Totally not my intent. ADHDers have a range of symptoms from a little bit to a whole bunch. If you've got a lot or if you're in a life or job situation that doesn't value your skills, you will d better with medication. I mean medication will make life easier, faster and with less effort. You will struggle more without medication.
After watching Inside Out 2 my 11 yo ADHD daughter is convinced that emotions control our lives 🥺🤷🏻♀️🙈
She's not really wrong. The trick is to check in with Judgement before Action
@@terrygingras6169Judgement! That was the missing character in that film☝🏻💡
I was diagnosed a few months ago at the age of 65...suddenly, all the crap of 60+ years was crystal clear. First I cried with relief, then I got really angry at the abuse I absorbed from childhood on and now I'm just trying to learn to give myself grace and forgive those who didn't.
Please fix your mic. It's just too much to bear this at this point. Sorry for saying it this way.
For a person talking about ADHD...ironically I found this video pretty hard to follow, and I was simultaneously drawing which helps me to pay attention. I mean no offense, i'm just being honest. I'm very glad for the people you have helped that they have found a trained professional to help them with their struggles. 👌 Thank f**k for people like you coming into their lives. Keep on doing what you do, the world can always do with more people who take the time to understand what it's like for us with neurodevelopmental conditions, mood/personality disorders ect. 💚
In this moment, the most powerful self resource that was helpful for me was in the discovery of actually (physically) doing what I enjoyed doing rather than bending to the opinion of others. That was HUGE for me. HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR STUFF!
Hi, how do I know I have adhd, and how can I tell if a child has it too
I can't diagnose you on the internet, but the symptoms involve a combination of hyperactivity and executive functioning deficits. Adults are typically not overly hyper although they may be fidgety and impulsive. The major executive dysfunction is difficulty with working memory which involves losing the information for immediate action that we try to store in memory., eg buy batteries on the way to work. There are also problems time-both sense of time passage and time management: organization and planning problem; difficulties regulating emotions: planning and adaptive thinking. These are hard to self-evaluate, so best bet is getting an evaluation from a medical professional who is familiar with ADHD, most likely a psychologist.
This is perfect: "People who have come to a conclusion based on emotion are hard, if not impossible, to change their minds using logic." Thank you. This was really helpful.
You’re a real weirdo
You’re a real Weirdo!
thank you <3
You are quite welcome.
Diagnosed at 35. I fought seeing anyone for years because I believe I needed to will myself to be better. Which I did as much as I could until it all crumbled. Makes total sense now.
ADHD is a neurologic condition, therefore willpower is not particularly useful. Totally not your fault either for having ADHD or not being able to improve. Hope your treatment is now effective.
I was just diagnosed at 71. Have you done any discussions on that? I just discovered your channel as I watch a lot of you tube. I love how calm you are! I wonder how many of us older individuals are like me? The medication "try outs" are really annoying but I know it has to be done. I guess we all would just like a magic wand to be cured.... Lol! But you are right! I always thought that I was stupid and something was wrong with me. Retirement made me realize something not right was going on. I had a very busy job that I could multitask and not get stuck on one thing which was really great for me for 33 years! Thank you for having this channel!
Wow! Impressed that you were able to hold out so long. Hope life improves significantly for you.
the main reason its so hard to convince these people that their views on the world are incorrect through therapy or conversion isn't just because they see you as The Man and or a brainwashed sheep and or their contrarian by nature its also because your sitting there and saying things to them that directly contradict their lived experience they have to choose to believe what your saying over believing their own lived experience and pattern recognition. It's like trying to tell someone that "actually gravity doesn't exist" when they have lived their whole life experiencing gravity's pull. the longer someone is one of these alienated people with adhd the more times this world view is affirmed and the more negative that world view becomes due to the escalation of both: their behavior and the society's reaction to that behavior ie going from getting in trouble with the school and parents for not completing homework on time ect to getting arrested for drug possession ect. essentially they have spent more time more acutely aware of gravity. dint mean for that gravity analogy to be poetic or melodramatic like that. It was just the first thing that popped into my mind as a comparison, what's a thing you know to work a certain way through lived experience? gravity. kind of a bad analogy because gravity is something people believe is real due to more than just lived experience but you get what I mean, its a contradiction of something that just feels like a fundamental law of society the way gravity feels like a fundamental law of reality even without scientific explanation.
Thank you for the talk! I have heard a very important think about supporting your child at what they are good at. Sounds very logical but we have got the advise from the psychologist who assessed our daughter to limit her drama/theatre classes (which is really her passion!) and add more physical activities. My gut feeling is that on the contrary I want to support those activities becausey daughters potential there is very high. I am trying me best to add some sports activities but it’s true that it’s not much simply because there is no time for it😕
Physical activity is a good idea. It doesn't have to be a sport. She sounds like she would like dance or gymnastic classes.
Looking forward to hearing the series about the compensation strategies!!
Bullet points please, I wanted to listen, but way too much talking for my adhd. How do you handle a rage moment or temper tantrum, what are some good coping strategies?
There are definitely more girls out there with ADD and ADHD who hide their brain difference. I am a female with ADD and Autism. I was only diagnosed recently in my early 40s.
Congratulations and hang in there.
Thank you Dr quit cold turkey after 15 years of daily use, got tired of being stuck in the same feed back loop, i want to achieve goals in life and will be trying therapy and medicine to see how things go. Thank you for your video you got a sub from me, been trying to learn about my condition and find my path
hang in there. stick to your treatment. it's one of the effective treatments in all of medicine. Hope you're going to those darn meetings as well.
Thank you for your videos, sir. I just discovered you yesterday. May i ask that you increase your Audio volume? It is really difficult to hear/ understand what you're saying,.which is a real pity. I do want to follow you..
Good for you, late 30s is still young. Wish you the best.
Yes yes yes
My husband and two adult children have adhd! I know that I have never had peace in the last fifty four years. I could not do this again. I also suspect some personality problems in this too.
Hello, Doctor, many thanks for the video! A question: you say “get diagnosed early” but when actually you should go get diagnosed? We have 11 yo daughter with ADHD and we have also 2 boys. Every now and then we see the signs at boys that could be interpreted as ADHD symptoms and we know that the chance that siblings have it are quite high if one has it, right? We are very open and already quite educated about it but we want to understand what are the reasons/signs that we definitely need to go for the assessment? One of the reason we don’t rush for it- we live in UAE and only private hospitals are available for us. We don’t have opportunity to get diagnosed in our home countries. And the prices for the mental health assessments here are seriously mental 🙈🥺 we have gone through so much with our daughter, she was diagnosed negative the first time, and then she got 2 times negative reports of ASD and now she is being diagnosed again and we have the feeling she will get it. I am not sure if this is about the professionalism or if we are particarly lucky family but as per our experience even getting the diagnosis is not a straight path and could require so much time and financial resources.
Boys tend to be more on the hyperactive spectrum of ADHD while girls tend to be inattentive type. If your sons are 6 or 7, they can generally be evaluated relatively accurately.
Adam here. This video🎯 highlights all the things I lacked but desperately needed all of which I am finally giving myself at 28, mainly by simply distancing myself from those who would continue to criticize and create drama in my life instead of providing safety.
Congratulations on taking care of yourself. It's tough to recover from a lifetime of criticism. The tendency is to carry that critical inner voice with you. You've got to learn to catch those negative thoughts and counter them with a more positive thoughts.further ADHDers responder really well to positivity and not well at all to criticism. Eventually you'll have to be able to forgive those that criticized you and scarred you, but that's not your immediate task. Keep in touch.

Was that parent who overlooked and was kind of easy on my son only to realize I've raisedan adult monster. Someone who has become aggressive, hostile uses the most filthy abusive language mostly to me. Blames me for everything also the fact he is now stuck in a rut. It is very difficult to deal with the person he has become. I am at my wits end as to how to deal with these problems now.
Hello again Terry. Long time no see! I can't wait to get a diagnosis. I can barely function as a regular adult, 29 years old, and the frustration is palpable. Thanks for the video and for beaming in again! Take care 💎💎💎
It’s great to hear about the strength of ADHD-ers! When everyone’s focus is on struggles and issues, I believe if we want to go out of the 70 criticizing comments a day spiral, it’s better to concentrate on the positives, strength, so we have the opportunity to add some positive parenting here! So thank you for the video! And I also wanted to ask your take on our situation. Our 11 yo daughter (an ADHD kid) is a great performer. It’s really her passion, and also she is really great at it (for the 3rd year she’s been participating in the local festivals, she was even invited to talk on radio..). She is doing classes 5-6 hours a week. The constant discussion between me and my husband is whether its too much and we should balance it with sport activities (which she is also doing weekly but less than the drama activities). Followed by the advise of the psychologist who diagnosted our daughter, my husband suggests we take an executive decision as we know better as parents what’s best for her. I have a mother feeling that tells me that I need to support my daughters passion so we are in disagreement here. The reason we even talk about it - her emotional dysregulation is very disturbing and so we are constantly questioning, what are we doing wrong/how to help her?..
A lifetime of negative feedback
There’s a lot here I remember from my childhood. Unfortunately I’m now reminded on a daily basis watching my 11 year old daughter struggle down the same path. 😢
Use your experience to help her. Find her strengths and talents and work on helping her improve those. Teach her to compensate for ADHD cognitive difficulties.Positive works better than piunishment. Get her to see that ADHD is something that she can have and still live a great life.
@@terrygingras616913:16 I’d like to introduce you to my “Tiger mom wife” I blame myself for that more than the ADHD. 😔 Thankfully my daughter doesn’t also have the accompanying learning disability I had at her age. Despite her struggles she actually is able to score high on her tests when she’s able to get into the right gear.
My 3 year old daughters temper tantrums and meltdowns are so frequent and intense. They started about 1. She has always been extremely difficult to settle to sleep. Was a colic baby. Remains fussy and disagreeable. Can be very defiant, refuse to get in the car seat etc and for the last 3 weeks has been point blank refusing to get dressed. She is also very intelligent, creative and articulate. Her father displays all of the adult adhd symptoms and scored high on a self screening test and is going to follow up with a dr, his twin sister has an adult adhd diagnosis...i know there can be a genetic link. I am not sure what to do about my daughter given she is still quite little, but what we go through at home with her behaviour seems more intense than what is typical. She is also super energetic and always has been. Constant blur of movement, does not sit still, always talking, always on the go (and she was like that since she was a baby, also early to crawl and walk). I asked her kindergarten teachers about her behaviour when with them - they had told me in person she often has emotional ups and downs but when I reached out recently they said she was progressing well and they have no major concerns so I am not sure whether to see a Dr or not. Maybe she is masking at kindygarten and unleashes more at home after keeping a lot of stuff bottled up...not sure whether to see a dr or wait until she is older, some people think wait until older because a lot of the behaviours are thought to be normal for this age group. I have a 9 month old baby too. Great video detailing ADHD.
Generally the younger the child, the less accurate the diagnosis. It is also difficult to find a good provider who will evaluate a child that young. In my private practice I never evaluated anyone younger than 6. Also given that her behavior has improve at kindergarten means she may improve at home. You sound like you're very busy at home and probably have some early sibling rivalry going on. Just relax,Mom. You've still got time.
FK everyone man including my doctors this guy understands.
Interesting, you mention that the “traditional” disciplinarial methods don’t work well with the ADHD kids. As parents of an ADHD girl but also other 2 neurotipical kids we can really relate to that! But we struggle a lot to explain to our younger sons why our daughter should be allowed to have certain privileges. We also tried to talk to them to convince them not to disturb her because she tends to be overreacting about everything. At one point our youngest (and cheekiest!) son said he thinks he might have hdhd (or whatever the name is..) as well so please leave him alone and let him jump on the couch during diner time, “he needs it”.. It seems like ADHD awareness campaign in our family has gone wrong🤦🏻♀️ any advise on how to explain to the neurotypical siblings about ADHD and why those kids should be treated differently?
Thank you for the information. I have working to understand ADHD as I was given diagnosed with it but never given any information on it.
I didn't find out I have ADHD until I was in my late 30's. I struggled a lot.
Hope the struggle didn't leave too many scars. The trick now is to focus on how much better life is now.
Im full of fustration and anger caused by doctors! I would try to explain but no mear doctor is going to understand.
Find yourself a Doc who is familiar, possibly even an expert in ADHD and he or she should be able to understand what you're going through.
I cant help thinking if terry ever gets mistaken for downs!
Hello Dr. I hope you are well. I believe my family of three has ADHD. I know my son has it because he was diagnosed at Children's Nat'l Medical Center in Washington DC. We the parents haven't been diagnosed. I believe I have ADHD tendencies. Not sure about my husband. Just started listening to your videos. Very interesting!!😀
Welcome!
Thank you for your great videos. My 7 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with combined version adhd. She has mild adhd and is on medication that works well. It is interesting because it is invisible and looks like a behavioural issue, but isn't - as you have pointed out. Did medication work for your son?
