Why We Remember: Unlocking Memory's Power to Hold on to What Matters
"We expect a lot of our memory. We want it to be absolute and easy. We wish to retain everything and get frustrated when we don't. But this is overlooking how memory works. The human brain is not a memorization machine; it is a thinking machine" - Dr. Charan Ranganath.
This unique talk explains the most central concepts in "Why We Remember," with several actionable tips on how to improve everyday memory functioning. Topics include why we forget, how to optimize attention and use strategies to improve everyday memory, how context, meaning, and emotion contribute to our ability to recall memories, and science-backed tips to reduce dementia risks and preserve memory in old age.
Dr. Charan Ranganath is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and director of the Dynamic Memory Lab at the University of California at Davis.

Algae Blooms at Lake Tahoe: TERC, Tech, and You
มุมมอง 1.1K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Algae or phytoplankton are a naturally occurring simple plant that makes up the base of Tahoe’s (and any lake’s) aquatic food web. Recently, there has been a shift in Tahoe’s algae composition with cyanobacteria dominating algae collected from mid-lake. Though cyanobacteria are a normal part of most lakes' algae, under some circumstances, they can form harmful blooms that are toxic. High abunda...

It takes time for nature to evolve....do you really think that fish won't adjust to a NEW food source. Nature works....just not on man's micro time scale. Notice the ratio of Mysis shrimp compared to their prey in the net....Looks like the other species are not in danger of being over hunted....

Hmm, NO mention of the vast Caldor Conflagration, a few years past, that JUMPED THE CREST, around Echo Summit, passing through and OVER Christmas Valley, with sporadic spots occurring in the Great Basin, well to the East? Besides jumping the Crest, another rare occurrence was this fire burning into timberline/krummholz forest!

If tsunamis and seiches like that, or greater happened today, Truckee and Reno might be catastrophically damaged/obliterated, with Donner Lake temporarily storing some of the seiche "sidewash". Maybe some of the seiche would come awfully close to Carson City! And for a few decades, Pyramid Lake's salt content would drop, slowly inching its way back up

It is obvious that Lake Tahoe in not part of the Sierra. Its a more westerly Carson Valley with a smaller rain shadow hence big blue. The Sierra crest is west of the lake, its easy to follow on a map.

I would think that any smoke event that the basin sees, that these particles whether they fall on the high altitude watersheds or the shoreline, that a certain percentage will make it into the lake. Alex mentioned that TERC studies the forests surrounding the lake. Does TERC have data on what these ash particles carried by smoke events consist of chemical wise, and does TERC compare particle samples taken from the lake see any data that matches? So say a sample taken from 7500 ft and one taken directly out of the lake, are they chemically the same? I would think so, and the particles taken out of the lake directly in front of a stream I would think would also match up in high volumes. Also Alex mentioned TERC trying to understand how particles in the lake bond together and possibly sink to the bottom. Have the chemical make up of these particles changed, do they have different substances attached to them that allow them to bond together in greater quantities creating a much bigger particle? How much impact do the dead and dying trees with their decay entering the lake have? Does this increase algae, and if so, what type? How do prescribed burns to thin the forest immediately above the lake contribute to particles entering the lake? Thanks for reading!

Thank you -- very informative. General question: Why do all these presentations always have to have added sounds (peculiar "tuneless music" and other odd/strange sounds that one wouldn't hear in a day-to-day setting). None of it really makes any sense and is arguably disruptive to anyone tying to listen to what the narrator is discussing. It's akin to attending a lecture and the professor has someone playing "tuneless music" and other odd sounds that come and go seemingly at will. It truly is all quite odd.
