One of the films narrators, Giles Milton, published a book in 2008 titled: Paradise Lost: Smyrna 1922: The Destruction of Islam's City of Tolerance. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about this subject.

My Great-grandfather was from Smyrna. He came to the U.S. in 1913 by himself. His brother Evangelos Fotios Gerontinos was killed with his wife and children. His sister Eugenia Fotios Gerontinos and mother Katherine Gerontinos barely made it out alive. His sister was either raped or almost raped. Some people saved her from probably an even worse fate.

I saw the film and was moved to tears. Life was so good for so many for so long. Then, just as in the break-up of India/Pakistan, the Balkans, in African tribalism and currently in Syria disaster, populations break down into hateful "we" and "they." Saddest is that even when people DO speak the same language, do attend the same religious services, do look alike.... they STILL find reasons to exclude and hate. I've reread Aristotle Onassis's childhood experiences in Smyrna. Horrible!
I haven't read Onassis' memoirs. the house where he was born in Izmir in 1900 is still standing empty..at the age of 15, he left Anatolia by changing his surname, which became Konyalides.His family came to Izmir from Kayseri.They also have a house in Akhisar.They bought a field and established a farm in the village of Akhisar /Kayalioglu and engaged in tobacco farming.The Greeks were burning villages and cities in Anatolia and leaving in 1922.A Turkish soldier found a little girl crying in a burned-out, destroyed building in the village of Akhisar/Kayalioglu and gave her to a family.This little girl was Onassis's sister Maria.Maria grew up and was given the name MAKBULE.Maria/Makbule was married, a daughter was born.And his daughter,married Op.Dr...Onassis repeatedly came to Turkey and begged his sister.Makbule, despite all the insistence, did not accept the offers of his brother Onassis."I am Turkish and I am Muslim.I don't want your money and your inheritance," she said.The Greek Consul in Izmir is trying to buy Onassis' house in Akhisar. But the old woman who lives in it does not sell the house.
