The Vietnam War from the Naval Perspective
During the early 1970s, Robert Nevin served as a Naval Officer on the USS Lawrence (DDG-4). During the Vietnam War, Nevin saw active combat aboard the destroyer where he was stationed. Throughout his tour, his ship engaged in both offensive and defensive operations in the region. In this video, Nevin goes into greater detail about his time overseas, sharing the specifics of his experiences and the life lessons he learned from his years of service. Thank you for your service, Bob, and welcome home!

My grand father Charles McCauley was a crew chief for two tours also from West “by god” Virginia he is the most badass man I’ve ever met. He has a bullet that he pulled out of the wall of his helicopter about 3 inches from his head
As Patton said, use'em or lose'em. No reason not to use former Waffen SS. You'd be nuts not to.
I was on FF 1041. We had two 5"/38 guns. I was a Gunner's mate on that ship from 1984 to 1988. When the ship was young, it spent a lot of time on the gunline in Vietnam.
What a great life story and an example for the rest of us. I can imagine those young students dropped her jaw when you talk about joining the military. I wish you had a picture of that. Thank you for your service.

Very proud of my brother. Fascinating details of wartime service. Well Done Bob.
Great video. My hat's off to Mr. Nevin for his Naval service. Thank you for sharing your experience, especially toward the end where you did speaking engagements at universities and enlightened students about considering a commission in the Naval service. I'm trying to convince a friend's 23-year-old with a worthless undergrad marketing degree to talk to a Navy recruiter about OCS opportunities for the very reasons you mentioned (commitment, leadership experience, etc.).

I was 67Y 20 cobra crew chief by Vietnam 101st aviation battalion 101st airborne vision
I was also a 67N20 Huey mechanic for my whole tour in Vietnam. Being teamleader of my maintenance crew, one of my jobs was doing all the testflights of Hueys that came out of maintenance. The testflights consisted of tests (obviously) and we would fly up to the POL point (gas station) to fuel the Huey up for the next morning's mission and do all the tests/adjustments on the way and way back. I had a few close calls from groundfire and rockets on the flights there and back, but luckily came home with only my PTSD and Tinnitis. I am proud of the job I did in Vietnam and miss flying a lot. 1st Cavalry 1967-68 December 20th to December 24th … 11B/11C … when I left … I was an E-5 Sargent Platoon leader “Echo Company” I was told … in charge of six … 6 man 81mm mortar squads and a Recon platoon of 20 young green brand new men. (Parrots beak Cambodia) … But while we were in the A Shau valley this NVA snuck up on our night position and tried to steal or turn the claymore mine around on us … he had no idea we’d been watching him thru our Starlight scope. Well I’ve blown claymores before on night ambushes, but not while someone’s on their knees and holding one 💥… I always wondered how far out in space this guy got … I’m guessing he is still out there revolving around the planet 🌎 Uranus as a moon 🌖… 👋👋 Yeah before we made the move down south … the nine of us in our 4th platoon used to get the new lieutenants, E-6 Sargents, medics to try and get them through the first few weeks in Vietnam… But they never listened … two got shot and killed doing something we told them never to do… Others got wounded … an officer if wounded got a promotion and an assignment in the rear. I’d like to sit down and have a chat with this guy … the stories we could tell … those close calls !

She was not the first female American spy in Moscow In 1962 an operative worked with my father ( British ) on the Oleg Vladimirovich Penkovsky operation . She as the wife of the American Chargé d'affaires: .
Also British spies never had diplomatic status so they would be under the radar, but if they were caught they faced serious jail time ,and had to be traded .
They know where to go ; they know what to take and where to leave them ; so it was well informed .........why survelliance is after people who do not know give .......packets or leave the packets .......

Wonderful story. I love stories like hers.
@ 26:20 "where were you, were you around when the Cold War ended?" The Cold War never ended inside Russia. They absolutely needed modern technology to advance further, faster. Once this was achieved border expansion progressed.
She's sharp as a tack...with a little bit of Edith Bunker likeability you can see why they picked her!
44 weeks of any language school and one should be very fluent....
Damn, this lady is a cold character. I would believe any story about her accomplishments. She has that nice-looking grandmotherly face now, but younger... the CIA can always use cool, good-looking female agents. Here, she has honesty, spoken with care. Respect to you, M'am !
I wonder if this clever and kind lady ever reflect on a thought that she was an accomplice to suicide of her agent. I don’t blame her but when she says “it was his choice” I wonder how much it helps
Very informative . Thanks
WELL WELL AMERICAN HAVE SAME METODS LIKE RUSSIAN , COUNTRY FIRST ABOVE ANYTHINK
The Trigon story is famous, it is so nice to hear the other side of the story. Trigon didn't just kill himself to avoid torture, he killed himself to protect all his secrets. The use of females is the classic use the enemies cultural assumptions against them.
Martha, I remember you in Moscow. We played darts at the embassy with you and Steve. You are amazing
We were in Moscow and met Martha Peterson at the American Embassy. We used to play darts with her and another guy named Steve. My husband was with Pan American Airways. I have her book "The Widow Spy".
Tulsi Gabard is a Russian spy 😮
When you don't like the truth. Attack the person's credibility 😢
She is a very nice, sincere lady, but I defer to Oliver Stone regarding the dark side of the CIA.
She rambles on so aimlessly and is so boring, I can't see her being a good spy , unless she bored her followers to death.
Thank you for this interview and sharing it with us. I found it thoroughly interesting and informative…..
The CIA is an evil as the KGB
Wow!! As this amazing woman was chatting, I could visualize her steps picking up and delivering. What a treasure she was and is. Thank you for the story!
Now the CIA works inside the US
A real bad-ass grandma. I wish i knew her when she was 27..... This most have been an experience!
Hey Martha, I used to travel to Russia up until a couple of years before the chicom virus. I've been numerous times on business. You're not missing anything. Russia is a hole. I hated every minute i was there. Met some friends that I email occasionally, but other than that, its good riddance. Its just a dirty hole with a McDonalds and some flashing lights here and there. Grumpy, mopey people. Too much traffic in the big cities, just like anywhere else. I don't miss it at all. Bunch of drunks. Can't tell you how many fatalities I've seen where drunks were hit by cars and you'd see them laid out dead in the street. I hate freakin' vodka and I can't tell you how much of it I've drank because that's what they do. Every business dinner everyone ends up wasted because the vodka comes out. Best thing that ever happened was the chicom virus and Putin invading Ukraine. Now I'll never have to go back.
Good video to watch since I just ordered a book on the lives of the first four women in the CIA when it was a legit outfit.
She is such a brave woman.💝
