andrew beckett: this is my favorite aria. this is maria callas. this is "andrea chenier", umberto giordano.this is madeleine. she's saying : how during the french revolution, a mob set fire to her house, and her mother died... saving her. "look, the place that cradled me is burning." can you hear the heartache in her voice? can you feel it, joe? in come the strings, and it changes everything. t...

Лучшая часть фильма. Просто до мурашек
Brilliant allround
Both brilliant actors look at their faces
Beautiul
How perfectly Tom Hanks describes the song of Maria Callas to Denzel Washington and showing all the emotions in it 😢.
Tom Hanks has been given a gift as an actor that elevates the depth of his understanding of the beauty of his characters. So blessed that I am alive to witness his masterful acting..
I saw this movie in the theaters in 1993, after the movie, a friend who had also watched the film, invited me to his home, he made amazing dinner and during dinner, he disclosed he had AIDS, he died within a month, it was terrible to see him fade away so fast. His name was Eddie.
Eddie is alive because you remember him so well
Gracias papi por enseñarme esto te extraño mucho en mí corazón vivirás siempre
How to not cry when hearing Maria , she directly attack your heart deeply .
Excelencia, sutil, bello…..
Beautiful scene, excellent interpretation of Maria Callas
Most healthy humans have the ability to forget about death altogether. I do not know how but they ignore it for the most of their lives. We know that it is there but some how we do not let it affect our everyday activities. We keep ourselves busy with jobs, raising kids and etc. I think we question our own mortality when our own parents die. The parents go away forever but their love and memories stay with us forever. Love is more stronger than death. But death is a reality and all humans have to face it one day. No exceptions. I guess this makes all humans equal. I think if we keep reminding ourselves that we will die one day then we will be able to do some good for others. I have not seen any actor in any movie who delivered such a great performance about death and life. I have seen many many movies but no one has moved the audience like Tom Hanks did about death. Tom is not offering any solutions or asking any question or asking for pity because he is dying. He is just pointing to the fact that most of us ignore consistently. Death is inevitable and it will come. He is telling the story of a girl who lost her mother and questioning her own mortality. Denzel also did a great job. His perspective changes about his own life in this scene. He is not frustrated with Tom about not preparing the answers for the court room, he is not worried about hating the opera or even Tom's condition. He is concern about his own mortality now. He realized that he has been ignoring this question for a very long time. He has no answer. He just rushes back to home and hug his child like he will never get the chance to hug his kid again. Someone said " Always plan like you have to live forever and live everyday like it is your last day"
This is one of very few scenes in movie history that no-one will ever forget. A starlight.
Tom Hanks’ performance in this scene was perfection. Love you & thank you for sharing your gift with us!
Pavorotti sing DD song Ordinary World will blow your mind aswell. And I cant stand DD.
What a life changing scene for all.Absolute class
This scene would never be possible with another voice
One of the best scenes in movie history imo. Hanks does the talking here, but for me, it's Washington who makes this work saying nothing, just expressing his face.
It was a great movie! the plot is very strong. but with a spectacular performance. I suffered it...... But I loved it! congratulations to so much talent. 💕👏🏼
I've only cried while watching a movie twice -here and the beachhead, landing scene is Saving Private Ryan.
Imagine what the scene would have looked like if the aria was from _La Wally_ which thematically is more relevant than _Andrea Chénier_ in its depiction of an outcast.
#OTD in 1993 Tom Hanks played Maria Callas’s recording of ‘La mamma morta’ for Denzel Washington at the premiere of _Philadelphia_ 🌹🌹🌹
One of the great moments in movies.
Two truly grand masters and geniuses of American acting. Denzel and Tom. Wow. Just wow.
What a true genius Tom Hanks was in this scene....so sad he renounces this role over wokism garbage...
So true!
🤎💚.
💜.
🧡.
L'émotion à l'état pure
I watched that movie as a kid and this particular Szene always made me tear up. Even if I did not understood the emotions that well , I knew that character was deeply hurt and felt pain mainly because callas was singing so passionate and he related to it. Damn.
Not a Cosmos. Probably a Star/Star Sapphire.
Definitely the star sapphire

Лучший момент..Забыла уже сам фильм, в эту нудную гейскую тему..а вот голос Каллас - забыть невозможно💣♥️
You feel there's hope, while she is singing how her sister prostituted herself for them to survive...😂 But it's a nice scene if you don't know the libretto.
God, I loved this scene. How emotionally open Tom is in basically teaching Denzel how to appreciate opera. He doesn’t have to hide his lifestyle, what he loves, who he loves… and Denzel is drinking in the parallels of the opera with this man who has become a very unlikely friend… just beautifully done.
All you need: 4 minutes to persuade someone to love Callas and opera. The writing, cinematography, and acting in this clip are as great as anything, but it is Denzel, playing the traditional role of the lady-in-waiting, represents the audience and as a result, he becomes us. As his eyes fill with tears, and the camera closes in on him, he understands, and we understand. How fortunate am I to have seen her in 1966 in her return as Tosca.
That is a wonderful memory to have. I can’t personally say that I have had any parallel experiences, though will one day I hope watch a Radiohead show….
😅

During my childhood and youth, I hated operas, but "La Mamma Morta", sung by Maria Callas in Philadephia flashed me totally. I searched for a cd with this aria, listened to it and till now, I love Maria Callas and many, many other operas especially italian and french ones. Such a great movie, too!
Ditto
I've had exactly the same
Before this movie, I haven't known this aria. Before this scene, it was just another scream. This made both denzel and me hark and tear.
The most emotional scene ever in a movie. Brilliant!
Such a heartbreaking scene and yet beautiful at the same time, Tom Hanks was outstanding in Philadelphia he deserved the best actor oscar his performance in this film.
All my hair standing. (I hope this is the correct expression.) ♥️
Most powerful part of a move in my lifetime!
merci pour ce moment merveilleux qui donne des frissons
Maria Callas !!!!!!!♥️♥️♥️
this must be the greatest combination of actor and opera from hanks and callas
