    I’ve shot rage hypodermic for 6 years, using an 80lb Hoyt with a 550 grain arrow and I have NEVER had one fail and the only time one has ever broke is when I got a pass through and it hit a rock in the field.

    Fixed bkade is more reliable and thats no question. Blood trails = recovery and exit wound = blood trail. If you hit a shoulder blade or even a rib you get no exit with an expandable, and way less blood comes out of a hole plugged with an arrow. Fixed is waaayyyyy more likely to have an exit wound and an exit wound means more blood trail because two holes. To be fair expandables have a wider cutting diameter by maybe 1" so you can miss the vitals by one additional inch, but if you miss the vitals it's unlikely to recover an animal with either. IMO if you're not pulling 65 lbs or a 450 gain arrow no one should shoot an expandable.

    Theyve destroyed firearms season here in NY. The huge influx of new hunters pressuring state lands and driving deer has made the firearms opener noticeably worthless. Guys will quit hunting when they stop seeing deer. It will never be archery and should be allowed during firearms season only. Or with a disability.

    The first thing many archers think when they hear FOC is HEAVY ARROW, NOT INTERESTED. Actually, the ASHBY emphasis is on broadheads that can survive heavy bone strikes, improved arrow flight via FOC, using A LIGHTER SHAFT with a HEAVIER POINT. Add the science of the bone splitting performance of a single bevel and your arrow lethality goes up exponentially. The emphasis that Ashby and Ranch promote is to aim at the most lethal part of the kill zone, which is forward in the rib cage crowding the shoulder. This holds the largest blood vessels in the lungs, the heart itself, and the arteries coming off the heart. If you hit here, the deer will go down much quicker, either in sight, or you may hear it go down just out of sight, no blood trail needed. A side plus is that many times these arrow systems will completely pass thru and you get an arrow refund.

    • @papajohnsy6659
      @papajohnsy6659 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      If this is the case why does the ashby study end up recommending 650+ gr for whitetails, and why does ranch fairy say things like "550gr is where you stop wounding game to death" It is absolutely a push for heavy high foc arrows, with little single bevel 2 blades.

    • @papajohnsy6659
      @papajohnsy6659 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      If the goal is to kill the animal as quickly as possible, by shooting it in the most lethal spot, why are we then told to do so with the smallest heads? If the goal is to dispatch game quickly you will not do that faster on a large scale by creating less tissue damage.

    FOC isn’t recent, it’s been a crucial part of Traditional bows long before compounds existed and is a critical part of the flight of an arrow as well as its ability to carry energy through and object after impact. Everyone should strive to be a better archer and everyone should tune their bow, just like everyone should take the time to correctly build an arrow.

    Nice vid. I do think your "pin gap" demo was a bit flawed though. The "pin gap" demo is really "point of impact" With my setup, if I zero in at 20 my pin gaps are the same out to 35 yards. I shoot a 4 pin site. Past 35 yards and yes, the gap gets bigger but inside 35 I use the same pins. Of course my trajectory is exaggerated but it is still the same pin gaps.

There are so many gimmicky products on the market now. As a traditional archer, I have been exclusively hunting these similar setups since 2008....actually, worked with Dr. Ashby on a penetration study for Trad Gang in 2011....my typical setups are in the upper 500;s to lower 600 grains with setups from 27% EFOC to 30-% Ultra EFOC....350 gn to 400 gns up front....typically, make 80 to over 100 hunts per deer season...the single bevel penetration is unmatched in my experience however, I still prefer consistent easy to read blood trails. I shouldn't be this way since, I have excellent deer dogs....your video has provided some very useable information to the archery community.

    @40:05 talking about wide genetics. Me and me cousin hunt public land where we saw several bucks 24” wide and wider. One of them had to be 26-28”.. My cousin shot one that was 24 1/4” outside that I had seen while tracking a buck I shot. We saw one a couple years later that made that blew that one out of the water. As wide as his body was long like Charles Beaty described. But he was smart. And it was in a couple thousand acre area that we saw these bucks. Anywhere outside this area we never saw or heard of bucks like that. There were at least 5 bucks over 24” in that area over the past 5 or 6 years.

    Arrows do damage by cutting. They aren’t bullets. It doesn’t matter if the arrow pokes right outside the body, or flys 20’ past the animal after going through. The same amount of damage has been done. Keeping your broadhead sharp will do much more for you than increasing the weight if you already have enough for pass throughs.

More educational is how do you aim at distances within 3-4 yards of actual and compensating between alert and non-alert deer.
