I worked at the climax mine in Colorado from 1978 through 1981. I was an apprentice electrician and for a few months worked on the big 170 ton payload capacity Terex haul trucks. The engine was started by a turbine that was powered by compressed air tanks on board. You only had enough air for two attempts to start it. If you expended that air without starting it, you had to wait for a maintenance truck to come and refill the air tanks. In cold weather the protocol was to remove a pipe plug on the intake, manifold and squirt in two entire cans of ether into the manifold, then replace the plug. Then start the engine. They were extremely unreliable. One reason was the electrical contactors (big relays) were about one size too small. They would need constant replacement of the contacts. The big fan next to the cab was used to cool the heater grids that were part of the dynamic brake system. A fully loaded truck could only be stopped by the drum brakes up to about 5 miles an hour if memory serves. The dynamic brakes were essential. The blower was driven by a series wound DC motor so the speed would vary with how much power was being applied. When the trucks were descending a hill, they sounded like they were running a siren due to the noise of that blower running at high RPM. Overall, they were a real disappointment for us because of their reliability issues. That fit perfectly with the GM automobile longevity and life in that era.

As an off highway haul truck operator, that POS can sit right there and rot. CATs are the best and operator friendly trucks.

Is this story about Esteban Dorantes who explored the American south for the kingdom if Spain 1527-1540? Read the account in Crossing the Continent by Robt Goodwin. Dorantes was sed to be the 1st African in the US. He is mentioned in the book " Aztec" Gary Jennings. Some say he was murdered by Indians somewhere around California but the Aztec story sed he went off to live in western Mexico after ditching the Spanish. Anyway his story is well known in Spain.

Great factual overview of one of our most unique national parks. I suggest a visit to the Rincon District - very different from the Tucson District and sits at the base of the beautiful Rincon Mountains. Thank you for your creative talents in providing this video. A suggestion: Mix in peaceful new age music instead of engine noise. This scenic drive would flow well with music.

Lots of these in the San Philipe Mountains east of Julian, CA on both sides of Hwy 78. Not sure if they’re exact same species, but they do flower red.
