We are a non-typical homestead in central Mississippi who are farming on a budget. We tend to think outside the box with simple DIY projects. We constantly prove the “normal way” as being not the “only way”.
We will show you how to easily raise farm animals. Our farm family includes chickens , quail, turkeys, ducks, and rabbits.
We are not sponsored by any company or product. Any product review is true and honest!
We upload new videos every Saturday morning. Can also follow us on Tik Tok.

Simple ways to prevent feed and water waste.
Yes this looks lovely but it also looks like ya free range them all is that true cause when they are inside coop and run always here it doesn't seem to be that simple tho I put my chick house close to the older ones I'm gonna put them in it worked well last year but the older ones was white and the roo os a gentle giant compared to the other 2 barnyard mix..it went well now this year got 23 chick's 12 weeks old and only 2 older ones and a roo is where they will go...wish me luck
Do you have plans
No I sure don’t.
Nothing like that size 12 boot 🥾
This is genius thank you so much for posting. I have a bunch of the hatching time cages as well but i want to get them outside! I have a carport that i can put up and move the birds into. This will hang nicely.
They’re still working great for us. Think I’m gonna do a video on these hutches to show how well they hold up. Thanks for watching!
Very good ❤
Thanks
Where is the sale at
Carthage, Ms
Looks so good. Thank you.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
I always fried my frozen squash I put a egg white on them to help the batter stay on
Yes mam that makes perfect sense. Thanks for watching!
Exactly what I needed. No bs.
Glad we could help. Thanks for watching!
How can I add a filter for self cleaning water
I don’t think there’s a filter on the market that can filter duck poo. Thanks for watching.
@@squarecountyhomestead ok I probably used the wrong words! Or asked the wrong question! I apologize for that! Do you happen to know how to DIY A SMAll POND with filtration?
No I don’t. Sorry. But I’m sure someone has a video on YT.
This is a lot of things but "best" isn't it. "easy" would've been my choice.
It’s the best build we’ve ever had. But hey, each to their own Wolf. Thanks for watching.
Okay, just FYI, you have chopped off the ground fault protection. You need to plug that into a GFI outlet.
Thanks for watching Paulie! As I do have an electrical background. Are you supposed to have GFCI? Yes. But in the real world…no. Works just fine.
Are there any chicken that are very noise I would love to grow some 😊
Hens aren’t too terribly loud. Unless they’re fighting over a nest box.
Most excellent! Can’t beat good ol redneck ingenuity. I should know. I’m right down the road in central Alabama lol! Keep’em coming brother.
Did you use long sweep elbows or standard 90 elbows?
Just standard elbows.
Ok so I built an outside version from scrapped rack so some cutting was required. My end caps came from Habitat and were most likely fridge or freezer shelves did not cut (let them stay a little long out front with no issues. I used pex with no elbows just elbow grease. I recycled orange straps from a pallet used for motorcycles. I added a third strap to the center back to keep the cage tight to the wall. T25 staples are holding all the straps to a 2x4 which will act as roof support because my setup is lean to outdoors! The zip ties worked well and the design was great! I had to purchase the bottom but they are on sale and being discontinued from what I saw online. The rest of the project will be recycled wood and tin. My build cost was around $45 buying only end pieces bottom and zip ties. This does not include feed irrigation or feeder. Local guy selling quail $3 ea. build time not including planning was around 2 hours because I had no extra help.
Sounds great my friend. Hope it works for you.
Dang a bear you got 20 dollars for a 12 nest box and around here in NC they sell on marketplace for 150 and up .
It was in rough shape.
Man I wish I had that silver lace Wyandotte rooster. I’ve got a beautiful hen , no rooster yet . Got her with a white leg horn hoping to have some white eggs down the road
Y’all folks down there must have a lot of money to pay 475 dollars for a 150 dollar hen peacock. Wow
Yep best kept secret, Mississippi is actually full of money. Regardless of what the “studies” show. But each to their own, on what they spend their money on.
I was looking at what I had available at the house and was about to build a hutch with rack. I decided to browse another time for ideas and yours popped up. I have all the parts I need laying around except zip ties and the tighter ribbed shelf. Your video changed my design. I am adding your video to my playlist library of other interesting content. Your straight forward approach is good timely information. Thank You!
Glad we could help! After your build, if you changed anything I’d like to know. I’m always looking for better ways of doing things. Thanks for watching!
I like moving the rope to the side. I'm doing to do that to ours because that is really the main thing that falls apart on this. We've had to replace a few zip ties but for the most part, this is a great build. So glad I came across your video a couple years ago.
Yea everything has held up. Of course we replace the tarp every year. And very few zip ties.
Thank you! 😉 👍
Thank you for watching!
Cute ❤
Very good information brother be blessed brother!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for the great video. I’m almost finished with mine. Ours wasn’t as cut and dried because I bought shelving off of marketplace not realizing that it comes in all widths and lengths. We had to work at it a little harder but it looks amazing.
Glad we could help. Hey as long as you’re happy with it and it works for your needs. Thanks for watching!
thanks as always brother
Thank you sir!
They’re so pretty. I have Dutch bunnies, Jessica, and Lola. When we got Jessica, she had five. Then we bred her again and she had another five. And this time she had seven. Our Lola, is one of Jessica‘s babies her first litter she had three but she is such a good mama. All three of her babies are extremely fat. They are shy two days of being one month.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Let's get a video on the best small green houses for veggies and peppers. Even a review on one that can be bought buddy😊
Great idea!
Great idea!
Can a cat reach thru??
We have a cat, but he’s never tried. But I would think a cat could possibly reach thru. Thanks for watching.

Ours did not have any trouble getting out. You may need to build a ramp for yours. Thanks for watching!
Was this auction last Saturday? March 30?
Yes it was. Thanks for watching!
I used more bags of pellets than you did, and I mix in some pine shavings. The pellets have been amazing g and have kept my chicken run dry all winter. It used to be a muddy swamp, even with a cover over top.
Great idea to mix shavings!
Ohhh my boys would like this!!! Thank you for sharing 😊 Coming in from Butler Family Farm
Awesome! Thank you!
Make sure to get the right breed. I accidently got one high producer egg laying chicken she died at 3 years old since they are breed to produce too many eggs and it costs them in life expectancy. I looked for hardy longer living egg layers which moderate egg production since its only for me. I was overflowing anyways with eggs so I rather have em slow and steady.
Invest a bit in the setup to protect them from predators cause this is the biggest problem! Predators canndecimate your chickens quickly!
This is our setup we’ve used for 3 years. It works for us without any problems. Thanks for watching.
To keep chickens is 100% worth it and so much fun. There feathers are beautiful all the different breeds and colored eggs from blue yo speckled from fluffy chicks, tall and skinny all kinds of characters its fun!
Love it!
Thanks!!
This just helped convince my wife for one in our backyard. I love the roll out. One thing I would suggest for anyone just putting one outside is to put a rod uou can take out at the bottom of the rollout so nothing steals eggs before you get there .
You won’t regret raising quail!
Grwat auction video. New to your channel looking forward for more livestock auction videos from you
More to come!
One observation that I made, is that you allowed your meat chickens to free range, which will cause them to waste too much energy if they are to be used strictly for meat purposes. If you want your birds to gain the most weight the quickest, you must keep them enclosed in the chicken tractor, providing water and feed at all times, and in selecting the feed, I would suggest the meat bird feed, which makes the chickens gain more weight faster than the regular chick starter. BUT, if you want to raise them for reproduction, then raise them the way you did, so they will remain active and healthy weight wise.
Watch our video on how to free range these meat birds. Our average dressed weight at 11 weeks were 6lbs for hens and 7 lbs for roosters. Thanks for watching.
Good video ,I see a lot of folks talking about meat chickens but you the first one I seen document a cross all the way through. And honest about it. I got some Delawares, Sussex, Dark Cornish, Barred rock, And New Hampshire reds this year I am going to breed from this year for a meat bird cross. The old game cock breeders say a hen passes on her traits to the male and a rooster passes on to the pullet, so i'm going to test that out with the 2 best breeds I like the best for each cross. Going to look at them hard at 12-14 weeks for size and what age the pullets lay. I havnt messed with the hybreds in many years, I like a pure a chicken as I can get to start out nd then look for best results in4-5 generations. Same way I breed my hunting dogs. Going to give it a try. Good luck with your chickens.
I candle my eggs using the flash light on my Cell Phone. 📱😊
Yea we use our iPhone sometimes too. Works pretty good. Thanks for watching!
What do you recommend to keep digging animals out. We have mongoose and wild pig that love to kill chickens.
This is a common question. You could line the bottom of coop with some type of fencing. But I wouldn’t think this coop would be hog proof by any means. Thanks for watching!
Hello, Have you ever tried to automate the feeding? I know there are some automatic Koi feeders that dispense the proper amount of feed a day.... just wondering, I am looking for a solution.
No we haven’t thought about auto feeding, mainly because it makes us interact with the rabbits everyday. Thanks for watching!
Maybe Meaty and some of his biggest daughters could give you the results you are looking for.
Yea I could have kept breeding generations and maybe got what I was looking for. Thanks for watching!
NOT HIRED HELP BUT LEGAL S😀😁😅😂😂😂🤣🙃LAVE LABOR!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Man, Interesting! May Allah bless you more, Ameen
Where in Missouri do you go to get that country pleasin sausage? I'm really interested in trying it.
Not sure in Missouri. We’re in Mississippi.
I use the back of a toilet
Pretty cool, I cant have the egg tray because of rat snakes. I'm going to try one. I'll use wire where you used ties. Thanks a lot!
