Easy Dahlia | Buttercream flower piping tutorial
Follow along with today’s easy buttercream flower tutorial and learn how to pipe beautiful buttercream dahlia flowers!
This step-by-step easy flower piping tutorial goes over the piping tips used as well as the technique to create easy dahlia flowers, perfect for cupcake bouquets or flower cakes!
To begin attach your square of parchment to your flower nail. Begin with the # 101 tip with the narrow end facing out. Leave a space in the centre of the flower nail, we will add the centre last. Apply pressure, pull out to the edge of the piping nail and then pull back to the starting point to create a long slender petal. You want your petals to touch but not overlap. Continue until you reach your first petal.
For the second row of petals I'm going to pipe in the same manner except I'm going to tuck my tip right beside the previous petal and this is going to give a more 3d effect to the outer row of petals for our buttercream Dalia flowers. Make these petals a tiny bit shorter than the first row. Pipe a small mound in gap in the center. If you're using two piping bags you can just do this mound with your 101 tip, or remove your tip and use your coupler. Switch to the number 81 tip and with the curved edge facing outward pipe lines coming across the top of this mound, overlapping slightly to create a flower bud shape in the center of the Dalia flower.
Now that the centre bud of the dahlia flower is complete start piping the inner petals. Hold the tip straight up and down, apply a small amount of pressure, pull up release pressure and pull away again. Continue until you have encircled the flower bud with small petals. We don't want these to overlap we just want them to touch. Now do a second row in that same manner. As you do the final row of petals angle the tip out slightly and try to make these ones just a little bit longer this is going to ensure a nice looking Dalia flower.
That is how you pipe an easy buttercream Dahlia!

Ingredients
1/2 Cup butter softened to room temperature 113g
2 Cups powdered sugar 200g
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract 4g
1-2 Tablespoons milk 15-30g
Directions:
In a large bowl if using a hand mixer or in the bowl of your stand mixer cream butter on medium low speed for 2-3 minutes or until fluffy and pale in colour. Add 1/2 of the powdered sugar and mix for 2 minutes. Add remaining powdered sugar and mix for another 2 minutes. Your buttercream should be fluffy, pale and thick at this point. Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix well. If the buttercream is still too thick/stiff add another tablespoon of milk and continue mixing. You will want a medium consistency buttercream to pipe your flowers with!
