In the thirteenth episode of the Prometheus series, The Film Symbologist continues the analysis of Ridley Scott's 2012 science fiction film. In this installment, I take a look at Peter Weyland's Company, the Weyland Corporation.
The Alien film franchise has offered lots of commentary on corporatism. Prometheus continues this tradition. Does the 2012 film delve deeper into this theme by explicitly comparing the Weyland Corp to movie studios? Does Scott expand this commentary to offer insight into the relationships between people, corporations, and history? Are people condemned to run a certain program and limited to play a certain role?

      It is my understanding that the movie studio was expecting a slightly better return on their investment with Prometheus and Scott was hoping for more universal acclaim. Prometheus certainly generated a good return for the studio - they made the Covenant sequel afterall. But if Prometheus had generated an even larger return and the film had received more universal acclaim, Scott would have been able to continue the story in the direction he wanted to rather than bringing the focus back the eggs, facehuggers, chestbursters, and xenomorphs as was done with Covenant. Spilt (2016), for instance, generated a 3,000% return on its investment whereas Prometheus generated a 300% return. At the same time, its hard to compare the two movies because Split was low budget and Scott would not have been able to tell the story he wanted to on a small budget. But the risk of doing a big budget film in the Alien franchise is that the final product likely won't satisfy the expectations of a large segment of the audience.

    Why would The Engineers revere The Deacon? From what we can gather, The Deacon, and The Xenomorph offshoots are incredibly hostile. Everything we see in the beginning of the film would suggest that The Engineers have a thoughtful and refined society where hostility doesn't feature without provication. It's either something else or not well thought out. They should have left Scott alone to make his 3 movies.

    • @TheFilmSymbologist

      Why would Frankenstein revere the creation of a creature assembled from corpses and then be disappointed when the result doesn't meet his expectations? If you think there is one faction of engineers who change their minds about humanity, then the engraving of the deacon xenomorph does create a bit of a challenge. But if there are multiple different factions of engineers, I find the reverence that the LV-223 faction has for the deacon to be more understandable.

    • @stevenedwards4470
      @stevenedwards4470 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @TheFilmSymbologist Well, in regard to Victor Frankenstein, I don't think "reverence" is the right word. He had an idea that he liked and was immediately disappointed upon it's execution. But that was more about him toying with the idea of playing god. There's a loose parallel with Engineers and us, and possibly many other worlds they seeded, but they couldn't anticipate failure and disappointment as a means to explain their worship of a perfect weapon. I also don't think The Engineers on LV223 were a "faction". There's nothing to indicate that there was society there. It was more a military outpost for weapons development. I get that the idea of factions exist because of what we saw in Covenant, but that was after the fact. From what we can gather from Prometheus, The Engineers on LV223 were original recipe Engineers who have a life span of 100,000 years or so, and they evolved to the point where they lost the ability to reproduce in traditional ways...for some reason. A society that can develop space travel technology would necessarily have needed to control their tempers to exist that long. The Creation Ceremony at the beginning of the film doesn't telegraph a hostile society. We know from ideas leaking out into the ether that they became grumpy with us because of our innate tendencies to war with each other and they sent "a savior", which was Christ, who we immediately executed, and that was the last straw... theoretically. The Deacon was also in a cruciform position on the wall, so maybe there's a thread there, but I don't think there's enough extant information to explain why they worshiped it past the fact that they were using its blood for reproduction or something. It doesn't explain why The Engineers would deify something inherently hostile. Hostility is the first retreat of someone out of ideas and I think there's contradiction there. Maybe Scott had explanations planned. Maybe not. People write themselves into corners all the time.🙄 George Lucas being a primary example. 😝 But I really liked the movie except for the helmet removal and the psst psst psst to the angry pussy snake. I wish they let Scott finish his thought. I was one of the few who never needed to see a xenomorph. I liked the creation story and just hoped he'd stick the landing with some Space Jockey exposition.

      @TheFilmSymbologist 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@stevenedwards4470 I don't think the opening scene depicts the seeding of life. As for why anyone would worship a weapon, strength, or conquest, we don't need to look into the far reaches of space for an answer. We can look to human history - the Greeks, the Romans, Babylonians, Egyptians, Mayans, etc. all worshipped power, strength, and violence. The worship of a killing machine isn't odd. In fact, it is the baseline, the assumed position. The worship of humility, meekness, and generosity is the thing that stands out as odd. The LV-223 engineers seem like they would fit in well in the classical world. The same is not true of the engineer in the opening scene.

    Call me crazy but I love Prometheus and alien Covenant. Call me crazy but I think Romulus is a cheap and juvenile fan film. I want to see a third installment in Ridley Scott's prequels where we see that the Engineers got the Alien virus from taking apart the Aliens themselves. All David did was reverse the process. He didnt actually create the Aliens but he reverse engineered them. He brought them back from micro-organism form

    • @J0MBi
      @J0MBi 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Even just looking at Prometheus and Covenant it's clear that David didn't create the Alien - it was the final stage of an extremely rapid evolutionary process that the pathogen follows. The implication is that it always creates the "xenomorph" type-lifeform given enough time and enough genetic material. David did however have his own agenda and see an opportunity with this, but it is his own grandiosity and hubris leads him to imagine he created "the perfect organism" and therefore achieve god-status - in reality all he is doing is following his own creator's programming. Weyland built David to be "perfect" and made in the image of God, David's image of God is the Alien - a being whose sole purpose is to rape and destroy humanity in the name of reproducing itself. David is this way because he's a reflection of the worst instincts of humans, greed, desire for power and revenge, lust and violence with no moral compass or limitation to his actions. He's a reflection of The Company itself, right down to his finger prints. They built him, so of course they are encoded into every aspect of him whether he realises it or not.

    Surely David did not achieve gnosis. He, a creation of Man, ourselves a creation of the engineers, may have felt he created life. But his experimentation does not appear to be on par with a transcendental understanding. To my eyes, it is an abomination - a grotesque parody - which seemed to be the Engineer's reaction to humans and their creation - David, much like Frankenstein's "monster". The Engineers would probably think Weyland's attempt to transcend the physical realm the same as they thought of his android. If we agree with Weyland's right to seek transcendental understanding, how should we feel about David's right to go on the same journey? We should feel that he's not ready based on what we saw - it was an affront by an almost living thing. And we must question, are we now equal to our creator to seek gnosis, or what does the creator see lacking in Man to exclude us from seeking gnosis? Weyland and David were so lost down the wrong path - still deeply locked onto the physical realm, seemingly asking the right questions, but with too many wrong assumptions about how to even find the answer. Thus the horror element. They didn't accidentally name it Prometheus. It is really a great film.

    The awakened space jockey engineer is different from the other engineers in the waterfall scene because he was on a different mission, an extermination mission, and not a life-seeding mission like seen on the waterfall. Their spaceships are different because they have different purposes (germination x extermination). So, I do not believe in the 2 factions of engineers, I believe that they changed their mind after realizing we are unredeemable and violent. They gave their lives in order to create us, educated us, but we consistently committed atrocities against each other, going against everything that they believed. The last drop was the crucification of Jesus. There is a scene on the blue-ray version of Prometheus, where the awaken space jockey engineer tells Weyland and David that the engineers created us, educated us, but we consistently resorted to violence. He also says that they took a woman's child (Jesus) back to Paradise (engineers home world), taught him the meaning of life and creation (love, peace and self-sacrifice), sent him back to Eden (Earth) to teach humankind, but we punished him instead. Weyland then asks the awakened space jockey for eternal life, to which the space jockey mocks him saying that our kind does not deserve it, so why he would grant him such prize? Weyland than answers that he, like the engineers, seeded life, by creating David, a perfect and eternal being. The engineer then realizes that we not only learned nothing from their values, we are also creating imperfect artificial beings (he knows that David is as malicious as his creator, Weyland). Meaning that we are totally opposite to the engineers, they created real living beings by destroying their own, we crafted artificial beings animated by a soulless malignant intelligence. They value self sacrifice, spirituality, love and peace, while we value selfness, materiality, hatred and violence.

      Jon Spaihts' original script contained a reference to Jesus and so does another script that has circulated around the internet purporting to be an early script by Damon Lindelof, but it turned out that second script was actually a work of fan fiction. Within the final theatrical version of the film, there is still a lot of evidence in support of the interpretation you've described. My preferred interpretation of the plot is a little different.

This is why I love Prometheus because it raises interesting questions that makes you think about it long after the movie is over and it is interesting to speculate on its meaning. I heard in the original script for Prometheus that the Engineer's motives were more clear and there were more indications that Jesus was their emissary sent to help humanity as they didn't like the constant warfare with each other happening on Earth and when Jesus was killed, that was what triggered them to decide to end humanity and bring the black goo to destroy them.

    Theism/theistic philosophy is the fire, upper echelon are the scientists and second in rank to scientists are those included to understand unfeathered philosophy: politicians, (some not all) lobbyists, magnates. This should remain because the majority still misuse religion. But it's the best we could muster. Don't feel like you're lesser because you cannot build a better home like your neighbor, we are not dumber because someone's rich or has power, it's simply those who recognize it can finally live free and attempt to benefit the society with what little they got without being disturbed by the otherwise jealous short fused majority (who'd say everyone is deserved of the wealth, without maintaining the wealth when they have gotten it, as can be seen with what happened in Soviet Union). Standard morality was invented to keep scientists from being hunted, I can recognize the long term value of their work, others just want to take whatever they built in order to use for short term power.

      I mean, it is the moment that humans learned the knowledge of good and evil. We woke up to that very specific thing, but it's not as though we were dumb before that. Adam names all of the animals before the fall, for instance. Naming things is the beginning of awareness and language. The knowledge of good and evil is a very powerful thing, and we took it before we were ready to do so. And against the commandment of God, our Creator, without Whom there is nothing and Who has absolute dominion over all of His creation. So, as we "woke" to this knowledge, we also were cursed. Sickness, pain, shame, fatigue, all non-perfect things that we know today did not exist (as far as humanity was concerned) before this moment. But we did not become "like God". We became less like God. We became less than Perfect. We gained knowledge, but lost our place in the Kingdom of God, with His very presence.

    Prometheus is one of the best science fiction movies I've ever seen (including Dune, Alien, Annihilation and Arrival). I'm fascinated by the Alein lore because I think it's one of the best in terms of exploring concepts such as motherhood, origin, masculinity, what is human and other questions of humanity. However, I recently watched Alien Romulus and this movie ruined my experience with the franchise. So I decided to take it back to the beginning, rewatch all the films and look for videos on theories and explanations. I'm loving your channel.

      Thanks for the comment. The franchise is pretty diverse with several different film genres represented - some of which are good genre flicks and others that are bad. Alien is a great slow-paced horror is space film with science fiction elements. Aliens is a great fast-paced action film. Prometheus is an impressive work of moral philosophy. And I enjoyed Alien: Romulus as a horror is space film that perhaps had too many call-backs but under it all was a good story with a powerful message.

    All good films, all good movies, all good architecture, all good plays all have one feature in common, which is that their producers and directors use gnosticism as the main inspiration behind their creation. Good architecture always involves the use of sacred geometry. All good works of art involve gnosticism as an inspiration - and that means alchemy and mysticism. Bad works of art - bad movies, bad books, bad plays, bad architecture (´modern´ architecture) all avoid the use of sacred geometry and the occult as their main inspirations. If anybody wants to make a work of art that works, they have to use the occult, they have to use alchemy, they have to use mysticism, they have to use gnosticism as a resource. This is because alchemy and mysticism teach artists to use references to produce new works of art. All the good alien films were based on gnostic concepts and those which were not simply failed because if you want to make a good movie you have to have a story - line and it has to come from elements of gnosticism - used to make The Never Ending Story, the Lord of the Rings, the Urotsukidoji movies, Prometheus, Solaris - all of them.

      In my opinion, gnosticism is one of the inspirations for Prometheus, but it is not the main inspiration. While it is possible to interpret Ridley Scott's film through a gnostic lens, I do not believe that Prometheus is promoting a gnostic worldview. I think Prometheus is promoting something else. I hope you'll stick around for the journey.

      There are several other videos that explain what was said in the engineer’s dialogue from the deleted scene and script. This video is an exploration of the engineer’s language that they imparted onto us, not a specific scene of dialogue.

    every alien film is. I could explain so many details most haven't seen . the recent movie is an inverted 5th element. air fire earth water blood sacrfice transmutaion and lamentation the names of the characters all have meaning the ship they flight to the station the name litterally translates to Gift to the gods or Sacrfice to the gods. it's got EL in the name "GOD" take EL away you have CORBAN IV I think Age of Extinction (transformers) also has a few links. Dan O'bannons original was about the dangers of denying Xenophobia. the alien it's self is a black nephlalim born of rape smart men seek knowledge week men seek commune blake i have a deep connection to i grew up along the same street he lived so it's always haunting me. Devil may Cry V also takes place along parts of a ficticonal city but it's locations are very familiar to me they are all places i walk most of my dog walks on, i can even mention locations where my father was born in bedlahm and the streets connecting where he was born to where he lived when i was born. Ironicaly oth connect with Virgil street and Dantie road. Satan Saturn lucifer Lumin Sun SOn Jesus. Earth man holy ghost Nights sky knowledge like this is denyed Normal men ebcause normal men shouldn't know the truth. thats why the romans gave the jews to christ the semite races seek to cnotrol the non believers non semites people who know are unfit to be slaves "god created man in his image" why make something in your image if you do not wish it to be alike you. TRON Legacy did show this with CLU, the program and the user Created CLU in his image but he asked to make perfection not freedom. this was why servatued was the programs will becaue they saw the USER as enslavers so CLU became the demierge till the ISOs where manifested from the darkness outside the grid (cube) another thing we want to be careful about is the introducion of IRON and CLAY (book of Daniel) it's like battle star galactica the man machine paradigm is coming around again, it has before will again but the minds of men will it and make it so. just a thought you wan to also ALWAYS pay attention to CASTING in movies like this. I think the new generation of actors are very reflective of their era so i may meet David Jonnsen one day, have to say "BRO peckham rye is a dump " >...< ok i gotta analize this movie again. if i had any tallent to give to scott free productions i'd of applied for work i think i'm Rosicrucian enough

      Unfortunately, TH-cam has added ads to some of my videos, but they are not sharing any revenue with me since my channel is not monetized yet. It takes an enormous amount of effort to research, write, record, and edit my videos, so my Patreon is a way to help me create new content. I wish I didn't have to do it. If more people engage with and promote my content on TH-cam, I may eventually be able to get rid of the Patreon and just post everything, including full, unedited videos on TH-cam.

    You’ll meet a lot of people who say they are atheist. But if you work as an emergency responder, in emergency medicine, or even as a chaplain in the hospital, you will find most of them lose their atheism when they are terrified. People in Western society turn from God in the same way that they opt to go no contact from parents who were not truly abusive. They are self possessed, conceited, they think it’s a sign of education and evolution, and they are naive. They think they don’t need gratitude and have no use for unconditional love. Until they realise they were wrong.

    Ridley implied the engineers lost their ability to procreate and multiple. Maybe your theory about them using the essence of other alien species for the goo because they were chosen for their abilities to procreate. Idk it sorta works

      One of the good things about ambiguity in a story is that there is lots of room for audience speculation and for us to imagine our own interpretations. Fertility and procreation are definitely prominent themes in Prometheus, but so are infertility and destruction. To me, the xenomorphs seem parasitic rather than life-giving.
