How I Plant My Cherry Tomatoes
มุมมอง 78หลายเดือนก่อน
I plant my cherry tomatoes in the same places every year, at the ends of rows of other vegetables. At the end of summer, when I pull that season's tomato vines, I leave some of the whole cherry tomatoes on the ground. The following spring, I thin the plants that grow, and have tomato vines for that season. It is much easier than starting them in the basement and transplanting. Why don't I do th...
Testing Seeds for Viability and Germination Rate
มุมมอง 27หลายเดือนก่อน
On August 25, 2024 I started a test of my potato onion and shallot seeds for viability and germination rate. Final Count on 9/4/2024: Yellow potato onions - 17 of 20 seeds sprouted - an 85% germination rate. Red Dutch Shallots - 15 of 20 Red Dutch shallot seeds sprouted - a 75% germination rate. Nero Shallots - nine of 10 Nero shallot seeds sprouted - a 90% germination rate. These are the seeds...
Vertical Squash and Zucchini
มุมมอง 100หลายเดือนก่อน
First time growing squash and zucchini vertically. In the past I grew it along the ground and it covered the walkways, making it difficult to care for and harvest. Vertical is now my preferred way of growing squash and zucchini. Also, 2024 is the second year I planted squash and zucchini toward the end of July in the spaces in which I harvested onions.
DIY Raspberry Trellis
มุมมอง 158หลายเดือนก่อน
I designed my own raspberry trellis, and show you how to build it. This design allows the trellis to be moved in the future. The cross-arms can be adjusted up or down, depending on the height of the raspberries. I use turnbuckles so the wires can be detached. It's all metal, so nothing will rot over time like wood trellises. Cost: $110.89, plus tax, plus the cost of the conduit. I used the foll...
Prepping Beans for Bean Soup
มุมมอง 682 หลายเดือนก่อน
Harvesting, drying and prepping beans to be canned for bean soup. After harvesting, eating and canning beans all season, I let the beans go for roughly a month so they would be large and start drying on the plants. When the leaves started to yellow, I harvested two bushels of beans, which were then placed on a drying rack. The beans were then removed by stepping on the pods and winnowing the ex...

Walking Onions
มุมมอง 6523 หลายเดือนก่อน
On my site I state, "...walking onions are not multiplier onions...They produce bulbils on top of a stalk and when a bulbil is planted, it will produce a single onion." During 2023 I received an email from a woman in New Zealand who said, "Our [walking onions] do reproduce just like the potato onion in the ground bulbing out from one onion or from one bulbil we will get a whole cluster of onion...

Preparing cured garlic for long-term storage by cutting off the stems and roots, then rubbing off a couple layers of skins. @user-wg3xu2um9s thanks I'm glad you're enjoying! I will not be selling seeds from this batch. This is my first successful harvest of seeds. Next step is to test the seeds for germination rate and viability (video will be posted in a couple of weeks when the test is complete). If any sprout, I will then grow them to be sure they produce strong, desirable plants. It's the wrong time of year to be planting, so second test will be January 2025 for spring planting.

    must be alot of vareietys of walking onions, i have 3 different cultivars and they grow diffrent clusters of bulbilles,havent chect the splitting ratio\bulbs on the different yet. i heard they are a hybride of cepa and welsh onion, but im not a specialist. Heirloom naturally vegetabels have some great ones, saadly i cant order from australia :):) and a guy named stephen barstow looks after the onion garden : chicago \ ringve botanical garden \ trondheim orway. they are both on youtube. thank you for sharing

    i have first years growin now!:)got seeds from irland together with som withe potato onion bulbs, the bulbs went "glazy" and smelly, orderd 20 got 5 and all ended bad..tried again orderd 4 types from uk, got wat i orderd, all loked god. lost two vareietys tru winter\early spring, now i think the 2 types that got tru winter, look more like shallots.... live and learn i guess:) anyway, some have flowers and i wonderd if its tru that potato onions make a flower stock\scape from the rot plate and not the center of the bulb like a cepa ore a shallot? then i can figure out wat i have, wen i harvest the flowering bulbs:) and thank you from me here in norway\bergen, for sharing many god videos, like the way you folow up your crop with the hole cyclus in one video. have a god weekend

    • @PotatoOnionGuy
      @PotatoOnionGuy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jane, Thanks for the comment. Glad you're enjoying the videos. All of my potato onions, as well as the Nero shallots, grow their seed stalks on the side of the bulbs, not through the center. I've heard of a Norwegian variety of potato onion in which the seed stalk grows through the center of the bulb instead of up the side of the bulb. If I remember correctly, that Norwegian variety is a biennial onion, not a multiplier.

    That’s a nice garlic harvest. I decided to phase out one of my varieties too. The Chesnok Red that I grow here in Canada is clearly a different cultivar than the ones I see gardeners growing in the States, much smaller! I added a huge new Porclain variety called Big Boy, the largest garlic I have ever grown!

    • @PotatoOnionGuy
      @PotatoOnionGuy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also discontinued Chesnok this season; too small. It will be interesting to learn if your new Big Boy is as flavorful as some of your smaller varieties. If you think of it, let me know :)

      @@PotatoOnionGuy I will try to remember! My sister grew it last year and thought the taste was really good. We got the seed garlic from John Boy Garlic Farms, they say that if they could only have one garlic this would be the cultivar! I haven’t tasted it yet, I only have a couple of bulbs to eat, most of the harvest went into expanding production! Klaus

      At what point do you plant them outside?

    • @PotatoOnionGuy
      @PotatoOnionGuy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ideally, seedlings should be transplanted when temperatures remain above 46°F (8°C) at night. Consistent exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) for more than 10 days can cause onions to bolt rather than producing big bulbs. Onion seedlings can be planted in the ground 4-6 weeks before last frost.
