    Not every town is as scenic or beautiful as Capitola -- buy every small to mid size town has a couple Jo'Jo's....and they deserve the respect and accolades this video has in spades.

    Wow, I remember that like it was yesterday. When the quake hit I was working at Opal Cliffs Auto Center at 41st and Portola. I was working out in front of the business when it hit. Seeing Portola rolling like waves in the see was unbelievable. The way everyone came together that night was incredible. Everyone was camped out in their front yards, nobody wanted to go indoors. CPD made sure the only gas station open on 41st wasnt selling beer. Lame. That whole week was very surreal. All the damage was unbelievable. No power for 3 days. The only other disaster I remember as vividly was the storms of 81 and 82 where the Esplanade was knee deep in sea water. Cant remember the exact date but my mother made it on the front page of The Sentinel after she was deluged by a hugh wave that made its way onto the Esplanade. Ahhhhh....Before Tola was completely gentrified, overpacked and over priced. I lived in Capitola Shores near Jade Street Park. At the time we were paying $400 mo for a 2 bedroom condo. Now those units go for $2500 mo!!! My father bought a house in Live Oak in 67. He paid $11,500 for that house. Now that same glorified shed is worth 700k!! And its a dilapidated 75yr old shoebox! Im digressing, sorry.

    In the mid 70's I lived in the Hopcroft Adobe (School Street Adobe). Cornelia Hopcroft lived across the hall from my apt. Every Saturday she would crank up the TV and listen to Lawrence Welk and the lovely Lennon sisters. Ah Onea and Ah Twoa She was 106 years old when I met her. There was a care taker that would come in during the day, fix meals, clean up the place. But overall Cornelia was pretty much self sufficient.

    In this presentation, I have just discovered the "first" Capitola theater--a silent film house! From 1975 to about 1997, I was a frequent patron of the later Capitola theater, built in the 1940s. I first became interested in vintage movie theatre buildings in about 1981, and long thought I knew of all the ones that have existed in Santa Cruz County. Just yesterday, I discovered the one mentioned and shown in this video. My friend, theatre historian Jack Tillmany, did a little research, and found that that it lasted for the rest of the 1920s, being repurposed in 1931 as a dance hall called Chinese Gardens, run by Frank Blake. The operator of this first Capitola Theatre also ran the Cameo Theatre, on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz, which I've long known was in a building immediately to the right of where the Del Mar Theatre would open in 1936. The Cameo had closed by the time the Del Mar opened, and the building which held the Cameo went down after the Loma Prieta Quake, due to structural damage.

    Hi, Jo Jo. I'm one of the guys that worked the para-sailing business with James in '79. I encourage you to share your memories of that time.

  • @JohnWOler
    @JohnWOler ปีที่แล้ว

    I had the pleasure of working for a short lived para-sailing outfit during the summer of '79. We built a floating platform on the short beach and towed and anchored it a little way from the end of the wharf, where tickets to ride were sold. A skiff brought customers from the wharf to the platform. We pulled parachutes from the platform and occasionally landed them safely back on deck, but often dropped the riders in the ocean. Fortunately, no one was hurt. I always volunteered for trolling duty, flying around in a figure eight pattern to attract customers. At the end of each day I got to fly back from Capitola to Santa Cruz. I could see the roof line of the Capitola Mall and more. The ride was about 45 minutes. That was high adventure for a 16 year old. I wouldn't trade the memories for the world.

      @JohnWOler might possibly be but other than that there was plenty of good times on that Wharf to catch fish and at the same time renting boats for as little as I believe $15 with oars or if one decides to get a motor it's usually I believe under $30 for the whole day and that's from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. that the boats must be turned in but if one remembers if you come back late let's say by 3:30 p.m. I believe there was an extra $10 charge but back in the day when Tom Shanahan had that fuel pump I believe he was a Chevron marine fuel dealer and also to one remembers back in the 60s I believe up until early 70s that Tom Shanahan charge two bits to fish on that Wharf and there was a very colorful character on that Wharf at that time by the name of JoJo Jojo If one remembers he had an old saying if you didn't catch any fish he would say this you didn't hold your mouth right .
