Xenos is a virtual instrument plug-in that implements and extends the Dynamic Stochastic Synthesis (DSS) algorithm invented by Iannis Xenakis. Programmed in C++ with the JUCE framework, Xenos is open-source, cross-platform, and can be built in a number of plug-in formats.
Key features include:
• Authentic DSS engine
• Xenharmonic pitch quantizer
• Custom scale import in the Scala format
• Ten stochastic distributions with up to two parameters each
• First- and second-order random walks
• Variable number of segments per wave cycle
• Variable amplitude envelope
• Polyphonic (64 voices by default)
• MIDI implementation (notes, sustain, pitch bend)
• External MIDI controller assignment
• Parameter automation
• Simple and streamlined interface
• Free and open source
Xenos was first presented to the Meta-Xenakis Global Symposium, and is the subject of a master’s degree from the Media Arts and Technology (MAT) program at UC Santa Barbara.
Xenos is available as a free download on GitHub: github.com/raphaelradna/xenos.

Space Control Quick Start
มุมมอง 6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
UPDATE (9/19/22): As of v1.0.1, Space Control is available for Windows! A brief overview of Space Control: Spatial Composition Workstation. Space Control is a multitrack workstation dedicated to the design, realization, and mixture of spatial gestures for electroacoustic music composition. With its simple interface and minimal learning curve, it makes quick and powerful spatialization available...
so sick, raphael! thanks for making this freely available to the world :)
👍🏻👍🏻✨✨🎶🎶
This is incredible! I only wish Re-Wire was still available in order to port this into a DAW.
You should be able to use a virtual audio driver (e.g. existential.audio/blackhole/ ) to route output of Space Control into a DAW
@@raphaelradna4838 Thank you so much!!!
Any instrument that lets me tweak the non octaviating Bohlen Pierce scale gets my vote.
Thanks for this - fascinating ideas.
@6:55 reminds me of the Libyan zakra music for example like this th-cam.com/video/q8NW_fqin9M/w-d-xo.html
This is amazing. THANK YOU.
I hear bunch of Hindu ragas
Not for me 😮
Thanks for making this synth available. I can't stop exploring all the different possibilities for creating quite unique sounds. I wonder if there would be benefits to making it a MIDI plug-in or Audio effect plug-in. Would you be able to get significantly different sounds from modifying sounds from other plug-in synths with the options in Xenos?
Adapting DSS as an audio effect poses some challenges, but I'd like to give it a try at some point. I imagine the result would be similar to wavefolding. Thanks for your interest in Xenos-enjoy!
scala import!! 🙌
Whoah. Some of these timbre alterations are things I'd only expect from modular synthesis. Definitely gonna have fun using this to make my songs immersive and full of brain-fuckery. Thanks!
Bro this could be awesome to create atmospheric pads.. especially when locking to a scale
great synth! thanks for putting it together and sharing it with the world!
super interesting!!!
xenharmonic wasp :)
Gonna download It when i get back from work👍.
It sounds like an angry wasp.
😂😂😂😂 🐝🐝🐝🐝
When you find out the Queen’s been cheating on you (a LOT 😳)
Accurate AF! 😂 😂 😂
@ 6:28 feels like bagpipes chanters. Thanks for showing this off!
Yes! Turn this into a preset!
Thank you for this brilliant synth!
Sounds like a hot-mess.....and that's not a bad thing either.😁
Hello Raphael, thanks for sharing your comprehensive work in form of this free plugin. Installed and running here. A unique approach resulting in unique sonic textures - my question: Downloaded the Pre-Built Binary and within Ableton Live 11.2.7, the entire upper menu structure doesn't appear (both for AU & VST). Is this due to differences between the pre-built version and the JUCE version?
Hi, thanks for your interest! If you are referring to the buttons and menus at the top of the plug-in window shown in the video, those are standard Logic interface elements and not part of Xenos.
@@raphaelradna4838 Thanks for getting back, and for the clarification - not a Logic user, but good to know. Also re-discovered your "Space Control" application, awesome!
Great synth, thanks, excited to get into it further.
really radical! Great chainsaw !!
@7:57 was the coolest thing i think ive ever heard
Totally. It's like an entire journey in that 1 segment alone.
Thanks! and congratulations for you and joao Pedro, hug from Argentina
Brilliant, this will be the first new software on my new setup. Bravo my friend.
Is there a Vst?
Anyway to help install into DAW?
This is just plain amazing, Well done! I see a pink floyd in a box as well as cinema sound tracks mixed with this. Ive a question: I see that it exports 8 files, one for each speaker. Doest it also export a stereo Left Right file? Thank you!!
Thanks! SC doesn't export stereo because there is no standard way of mixing 4-24 channels down to stereo.
Word
Awesome!
Very cool
Thanks very much great job
@Raphael Radna Thank you for this. Do you have an plans to include elevation into the point values? That would be useful. I work in Mach1 Spatial, so amplitude-based, it would be perfect for that, but I like that this can all be done either pre or post DAW.
Probably not for this system, but I'd like to address that in a successor. Thanks!
tho
fr stay on the grind
I was rather hoping that it would be possible to open another instance of soft soft VST in rewire and drag stuff from one to another but
how can you use it with multiple speakers set up?
great work congrats--will there be a version which can do spatialisation of live music input-
Also, please could I have all mac shortcuts please
This is brawsome. Well done and thanks for sharing 👏 🙏🏼 If you coded this for ios you would become a legend in the fast growing audio world 👍🏼✌🏼
Could you please write a pdf manual for this? saves having to go to youtube everytime I need to recap on using your plugin. looks great
A manual is included in the software distribution
Any future plans for a Windows version? I like how simple the workflow is. I am currently working with SPAT on Max/MSP, which is great, but also kind of a pain in the ass when you just wanna have a simple setup for sketching ideas. This on the other hand looks great in terms of user-friendliness.
Hopefully in the near future
Space Control is now available for Windows! Visit the GitHub link in the video description to download.
this is soo cool, i have a question, this works with ambisonics? or its just a really well done intenisty panning?
Thanks! Space Control uses amplitude panning.
@@raphaelradna4838 is there a version for Windows?
@@OmiOG There is now-grab it from GitHub
Well done and congrats for your phd
This is impressive. Well done.
Is this entirely amplitude-based 'panning'? Which speakers are on when a signal is placed in the center? Which speakers are on when the signal is placed 1/3 of the way from the center? Thanks.
Yes, it's amplitude panning. The azimuth of the source determines the active speakers, and the radius controls the balance between speakers on opposite ends of the circle. At the center, a source will be reproduced equally on two sides of the circle using 2-4 speakers (depending on speaker layout and source azimuth). As it approaches the perimeter, the weighting of the speaker(s) near its location increases while that of the opposite side decreases. I hope this helps.
