Why does Paradox rule Grand Strategy?

Why does it feel like Paradox is the only game developer making grand strategy games? I go over 5 of the top reasons why I think that Paradox rules the Grand Strategy genre as well as talk about some of their less successful work, how I think they can keep their dominance and how I think a competitor can arrive.

    From what I can tell, your biggest problem with your project is that you did not know what your game was. You had vague ideas: Modern age, not real world, map game, random maps, economy... but these elements are not a game. Games involve players making interesting and consequential decisions to achieve a goal in the face of resistance. None of the ideas you talked about actually amount to a GAME. So you spent huge amounts of time on programming problems: making a map generator, generating random provinces, making economic models... when there was no game concept to focus your ideas and direct you to where your attention really should go, so you wasted tons of time on difficult and aimless programming projects. You invested 90% of your time in areas that represent maybe 5% of a player's experience. You wanted to make a map game. What are the key ingredients of a map game? There are maps, they have provinces, players own provinces, those provinces have attributes (military units, population, economy, etc.) that can change (including who owns the provinces). That's a map game in its most distilled form. MAKE THAT GAME. MAKE IT INTERESTING. I believe that in the game I just described, there is no element you could remove and have a playable game. So make that first. Everything you worked on, you could do without. Map games don't need random maps to be games. Their economic models can be as simple as "1 pop = $1" (or you can attach a dollar value to a province; no need to even have pops) and they'd still be games. You can still have a map game with ZERO unit variety; ten soldiers beat less than ten soldiers. MAKE THAT GAME FIRST, MAKE IT INTERESTING, AND START BUILDING OFF THAT. You can add the more complicated stuff later, but not until you have your core gameplay down solid. I also recommend you not do any programming in the beginning and make a paper prototype first. Paradox games are really political sandboxes where players interact with the system to achieve self-defined goals. Gather your friends in a room, draw a map on a whiteboard, and be the GM of the game you think you want to make. See what they do; what goals do they set for themselves? What do they think they need to use to achieve those goals? Where is their attention focused? What's fun for them, and what is not fun? (This could also be a PBEM game where you make a map in MS Paint, keep stats in an excel spreadsheet, players send you orders via e-mail, and you update manually accordingly.) Basically, build out a theory of fun for the type of game you think you want to make before you type ANY code. When you go back to code, again take the attitude: what is the one feature on my list of potential features that's absolutely needed to make this a fun game? Small teams can certainly make complicated games that people enjoy: that's Dwarf Fortress. But you cannot approach this as a programming project. This is a game design project, and game design is a skill entirely separate from programming. So work on your design skills to prevent this from happening in the future. That includes reading books talking about game DESIGN (rather than game PROGRAMMING).

      Whilst I 100% agree for a viable game, I must admit at the time I didn't care for people playing my game, in a way my focus was looking at the game as a programming challenge/problem over being a "Game". My number 1 lesson is to fail quickly, i.e. prototype the bare minimum needs as you mentioned and find the fun before starting production.

    This is why it’s important to make a static map firsts which you should have done one of earth and then expand to other generation

    • @mohammedkapiel
      @mohammedkapiel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is definitely a way to go about it, but overall I'd say my main mistake is not starting with the most simple possible prototype first.

    This was very valuable. Thank you for sharing your experience, Mohammed. There's actually a solo developer doing a Cold War themed GSG. The game is called Espiocracy. You might want to check it out. The game has a smaller scope compared to other GSGs and it kinda works I think.

I agree, I do think that focusing on a certain aspect limiting the total scope is a very valid and commendable way of managing it. I would love to play and analyze it once its out, maybe it can give me a push to resume or restart my game after. Also didn't know that a solo dev was making it, thank you for that insight, it's honestly impressive and I wish them the best.

    Yeah, unfortunately I have made similar conclusions myself, although my issue was years of project jumping. Now I have a tested and well known concept for smaller project in the works with a clear goal, even a storyboard, which is a first for me. But so far I'm very happy with the project and the story I want to tell with it, so fingers crossed. But I do have a friend who really on developing his own 4A-Space game, akin to Stellaris and others with full on mod-support and everything. Like you've mentioned, he also has perfectionist tendencies. I've hinted a lot at him that he should start small but he has a thick skull and I can't/want to stop him. I can only hope that, unlike myself, he'll does not need years to come to learn the lesson. Anyway, I wish you good luck with your projects. Happy developing!

      Thank you so much 😊 I wish you and your friend the same 🙏 Sadly some lessons are hard to teach, we just need to experience them ourselves. I knew the advice before starting, but I think the issue was that "start small" means vastly different things for different people. Honestly as long as you and your friend are happy, then you can't go wrong.

    Making your first game a grand strategy is um, certainly a choice XD. It's an incredibly difficult genre to learn game development with because most grand strategy games are built from the ground up. There are plenty of tools to help you learn to make a shooter or a platformer, but strategy games are another beast entirely.

    • @mohammedkapiel

      Lesson learned 😂 But I did have experience with game dev, but it was just a couple of game jams and a couple of projects I worked on but weren't solo. Even then it was too big of a challenge at that point, but a genre and style of game I'd love to go back to soon enough when I have the skills, confidence and maybe team necessary.

There are many metrics to measure efficency, I assume you mean optimisation but even then, is it memory management, instruction execution, or the render pipeline? Also, what are you comparing it to? Would love to hear about more " efficient" options, and what type of workflow specifically applies, i.e. 2d or 3d?

    how can u become a game desiner?

    • @mohammedkapiel
      @mohammedkapiel 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well that depends on the capacity you want to be a game designer. If you want to work at a larger studio, then you probably benefit most from a "formal" education. There are degrees specialized in the matter. However, I don't believe that is necessary for most cases, you can learn what you need through practice, and online resources. I recommend at first starting with some general knowledge, YT channels like @GMTK and @extracredits ca be a good source to get a feel of what a game designer does. But if you then want to pursue it more seriously without a formal education, you can either take courses that are shorter and cheaper, or be self taught through books. The one I recommend first is the Art of Game Design. Now I tried most of these things out, however the most useful thing is practice, thoughtful practice. So make games, but focus on the design, try to understand why people like or dislike certain things, playtest often. This is the best approach, and honestly is needed no matter which other approach you make. It isn't "Just make games" it's make games in a thoughtful and focused manner. Honestly if you want to be specialized in design, I'd look for solid almost complete game templates and just change one system, or mechanic or thing and test it. Or just make paper prototypes or Board game prototypes. basically to focus on design, try to avoid distractions like getting bogged down in Art, or sound or Programming. I hope this helps you start your career 🙏 If you meant more so as a jack of all trades game developer, that is more than just design, so you still should learn to design games, how to write documentation, how to find "the fun" etc. but then also learn Art, or sound or Programming etc. So it takes time, but is very rewarding still and thus I encourage you to do it for fun at least at first.

      Thank you, I hope it helps 😄. It depends, from what I know, at least, but would love for people to correct me, and this might just be a personal preference. But the assets folder I use is basically everything that isn't specific to my game and not specific to any particular module. I think others might have a scripts folder aswell, but personally I find it confusing and prefer having a scripts folder inside my assets for general utility and another one inside my game folder for general game specific utility. Again, I don't think there is a right or wrong way, but I would love to hear what others think and their personal prefrnces. If I find any good resources for the project organisation, I'll make sure to add it.

      Agreed, it isn't easy to do properly. But the process itself is rewarding, so go for it if you enjoy the work. I'll also hopefully keep posting, so maybe some of my content can help. Another thing I'd recommend is to make small prototypes and build over time, say start just focusing on making a base building game, then focus only on units and combat like I did, etc. Could work by making multiple small games rather than jumping straight into a large task. Whichever you do, I sincerely wish you the best 😄

    I am really happy watching the content you offer. not only is it insightful and inspiring, but also I found it kinda entertaining and intriguing to watch how this channel develops and evolves as it gets bigger especially since you always have this compo of discussing game design and not only DEV tutorials that are all over the web. I am happy to witness your solo-dev journey and see it progress slowly yet steadily. Hopefully, you will eventually sustain logarithmic growth with such organic and genuine content. Keep it up and of course, I am just a regular fan of whatever you are doing here ;)

    What you describe is sort master of Orion 2 method But moo2 had extra twist Tech you cant research but only to get from exploration random event Or by investing in capturing enemy and revers engineer the tech Its a good method But there is still something missing If you place it in civ game Well its fine as well But civ has also a problem The tech is felt empty You dont have to really read through Becouse you will have all tech eventually - the game is on speed not quality Basically a complex method sould be: Fog two steps view with choice out of 2-3 out of 6 posible options in one of x directions when you get random 3 out of 6 (Replay-ability) - add little aquared knowledge of posable tree Reviled by events/locations - Add quest tech gain that is not bound by the random mashed tree fixed to each faction at game start (foged) - Add some advancement resource that can be obtained via diplomacy or from raids by non playable faction (barbarian or whatever ) Or by developed tech to gather that res in advanced game (Logic if you get a tech that is far beyond current tech level of civ You can still build the unit but it requires patience and some planning Also add level of tactical thinking Sell or buy res that is not adequate to current tech level ) This way you create 1) foggy tech tree 2) strategic - must think 3) non linear development 4) need to have convo with other factions other then war/peace agreements 5) randomality to keep game unexpected development 6) brick to replayability 7) reason to read the tech tree explanations and dependancies 8) all together tech tree becomes mystery mini-game of its own implemented into a bigger picture (Tech trading is a bad idea but very low chance tech steeling is a good idea giving another layer of decision game ) 9) it also gives you same basic tree for all players as module without harming diversity

      That is interesting, I never played master of Orion 2,so thank you for the input. I agree about the issue of you will get everything eventually, I considered the idea of having some techs only unlockable based on criteria, such as finishing certain quests, having certain buildings so yeah can definitely add a way of gaining it from other factions for example. Overall this is very interesting and has given me plenty to think about, thank you 😁

      @@mohammedkapiel If you haven't played MOO2, you a) haven't lived, and b) it's about as foundational to strat/4x as Civ is, so you're missing some baseline source material. It's especially informative as an example of how relatively simple mechanics/inputs can produce an extremely engaging 'just one more turn' gameloop despite not being 'deep' in the modern sense. Good luck with your game, enjoyed your thoughts on this issue. There's definitely a tension between player agency and joy of discovery, exacerbated by the fact that strat games are meant to be replayed many, many times and so the value of the tech fog/discovery mechanics drops with each replay (or immediately as players rebel and open a wiki).

    • @mohammedkapiel
      @mohammedkapiel 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll try to find the time to check it out. I always love finding new games to influence my design. You are totally right about the tension, I think it's a "cursed game design problem," i.e. no perfect solutions exist, but game designer do their best to circumvent it.

  • @jakab174
    @jakab174 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    intresting, i just thought about these problems and youtube recommends these videos :D My solution is no tech tree. If you build in a certain direction you will have heureka moments in those area.

    • @mohammedkapiel
      @mohammedkapiel 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That can definitely work, I feel like that makes it more or less exclusively a reward system, sort of like a questing thing. So depends how much strategic decision making you want to give the player, and if the answer is I just want them to decide what you build and skip the busy work of gaining and spending resources there after then this certainly works. Good luck with your game dev journey 😁

    Against the Storm have nice "hidden" progression that is actually fun. Beside of bigger rogue-lite type unlocks for next run (which are fully visible), in every run you get limitations on buildings and with quests you get points to unlock one of 3 "random" buildings that game offers you. Everything with balancing, taking time to make your people happy but also fighting with time restriction because your "loose meter" is filling up every minute sums up to really tense but rewarding experience, great game to check out. P.S. Love Your videos, You are a great inspiration! Can't wait for another video!

      @mohammedkapiel 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much 😁, that really means a lot. That's an excellent recommendation and yeah I actually played before the storm. Although not a lot so I really should analyze it more. I think it would take a lot of playtesting, but in theory I could do something similar. The council will mostly be deciding things outside your jurisdiction which will have a large impact on the city economy and thus what types of research you'd have access to this run. I actually also have what can basically be called a "lose meter" so hope that can add a similar sense of tension.

    The different guilds and their competing ideologies remind me a lot of the interest groups from Victoria 3, but from a more intimate perspective which is really cool. I don't know if this is what you're looking for exactly with this game, but I would also recommend looking at the board game John Company 2nd Edition. The game basically revolves around each player taking control of a different aristocratic family attempting to control the East India Company in the late 17th century. While there is a whole lot going on in JC, I think the way it handles different positions in the company(like chairman, minister of trade, minister of war, etc.) could be interesting to apply here, where one position might be responsible for directly appointing another. Like in John Company, the Director off Trade is appointed by the Chairman, but are themselves responsible for appointing the different President positions. It leads to a lot of interesting politicking where you might help another player become chairman in exchange for being nominated the next minister of trade, for example. That may be too difficult to actually implement but I think that kind of asymmetry among different political appointments could be very fun!

      Glad you think so,. Victoria 3 and Paradox games in general are a huge inspiration that is true, nice catch. Don't know John Company 2nd Edition, certainly sounds interesting to look into, especially appointments.

    While I enjoy large scale Politics like Suzerain, I would like to have a robust system like you mentioned. You, one council member could not override everything and would need a legislation to pass with compromise and discussion/corruption. Vote for my bill and I'll vote for your bill next relationship. Where your decisions have lasting consequences, a cog in the machine and but not the handle. Norland and King's Orders got me hyped that these games, Nothing is fully in your control. Plan and hope for the best. Frostpunk2 got me excited as you are the Steward for the city and any legislation pass would need a 2/3 majority. Will be subscribing!

      Thank you, I'm glad you like the concept. That is exactly the experience I want you to have, this feeling of compromise and that things aren't truly in your control. Thank you for the sub and hope you stick around till you can play the game and tell me what you think 😁

      @@mohammedkapiel I'll stick around till the game is out, been looking for a political game but on the local level. Some say "eh, its just a city council, they dont have much power." Well, their policies effect the area and are felt almost immediately instead of like State and Federal legislation takes a long time before it is felt. The TV series "Show Me a Hero" just shows how competitive the city council seats are. Cant wait for the game!
