This video is meant to provide a rough outline of the procedure needed to swap out the engine covers on Triumph's Modern Classic 1200cc engine. Per the Triumph shop manual, torque spec for bolts on both covers is 10 Nm. It was brought to my attention that I may not have done a great job explaining the section where I discussed sealing the hole in the alternator cover where the wiring loom comes...

Nice video. However, If you are looking to get the real original product with a sharper finish at a reasonable price - then head to our shop. This is point blank a copy and a bad one at that.
It's a headlight made by Holley and a metal ring that's nearly invisible once installed - I'm very happy with the one I got from a shop I know and trust!
@@wpanik I think "trust" is a not a word we'd use. We trusted them and found out the hard way. That's our design, they stole it and used us along the way. The community should know that.
@@broguemotorcycles Whatever you think you need man!
thats lovely btw very nice series about the air box
Thanks so much!
@@wpanik I have question did the bike runs great afterwards because I'm planing to do it on my speed twin 1200
@@Zen635-q7y It ran just fine. Immediately after finishing I ran the auto re-program (start the bike in neutral, don't touch the throttle, let it idle for 12 min). That was fine, but I did install a DNK Tuneworks tune through TuneECU a bit later to take advantage of the better airflow. I had it on a dyno that showed 89-hp, 79-tq at the rear wheel. Still a little rich in places on the dyno chart, but good overall.
Thanks William! I'm at the part where I'm trying to line up that clutch rod into the button and this is my 4th attempt at it. When I think I've got it, the actuator arm at the bottom moves back and forth to about 80 degrees and I know that's not right cause there's way too much clutch cable available to slip into the notched area (whereas when I was taking it off it was pretty tight). I guess this is a common problem when re-installing that cover and I'll just keep at it. Thanks for this video because it confirms that I something was wrong, mainly me. Cheers.
It would be great to see a comparison of brightness between stock and what you just added.
Unfortunately I already had an LED bulb in the stock housing so it wouldn't be a great comparison. If you follow the link in the description, there's actually a comparison pic on the A&J website!
Hummm…I’ll send you my thruxton for the same. Nice job!
Good video, thanks
Of course! Glad it was helpful.
Awesome video, thanks for posting. My clutch cover coating is peeling off (Speed Twin); a common occurrence I'm told. Just need to decide whether to get the original powder coated by a local firm, or jus buy a new part. Thanks again and safe riding!
Glad it was helpful! Hope you get it sorted.
Appreciate the video. I have a Street Scrambler and watched this to help understand how to get my bike back together after replacing the shifter shaft.
That's great! I love hearing the different things people have used the video for.
Only video I've found talking about how the shifter shaft is to be installed. Thank you.
Of course! That part have me so much trouble. Can't tell you how many times over looked up TH-cam videos for stuff like that so glad I could help!
If i sent my bike to AJ cycles would they do this for me?
For the right price I'm sure they would! I know Brian and crew have done airbox deletes in the past.
May I ask which battery you use? The link you provided in description is no longer valid, thank you in advance!
Hey there! Hate that the link is dead. It was a Firepower lithium battery with 180 CCA, 12V/36WH. I also see LFP02 in the description which might be the part number.
4:07 pushing the tab down advice very helpful
Glad to hear it!
Nice especially the exhaust headers. Own one thruxtons are fun.
Thanks!
On race fuel ⛽?
Pump gas!
Hey man, what bars are those? Ive got an RS but want a bit more of a sportier stance and those bars look like theyd do the trick.
Thanks! They're actually the OEM Triumph clip ons that come with the café fairing.
Absolutely like your bike. The silver looks wesome. Thinking get one too. I just don't like the rubber tank pads, but thats my taste.
Thanks! I'm honestly not in love with them either, but the bike needs them. The tank is so narrow and slick there that it's very difficult to grip without the pads.
Great job. Looks wonderful.
Thank you so much!
Hey! Thanks for the video! Just a question regarding small balls bearing in clutch cover (those for gear shafts). How did you removed them before powder coating? Thanks
So sorry I missed this comment, I hope you got it sorted! I had received them already coated and with the bearings installed.
Wow, crazy. nj
Thank you! It was a really fun project.
great job... I so want this for my RS, but looked pretty intimidating... I mean... I'm a hands on dude, but this one... I dont know.
It was a lot of work but totally worth it!
Great video. Roughly how much did the parts cost?
I bought them second hand for about $200. But I think if you buy each cover direct from Triumph they're about $200 each side.
Hey! Thx for the video! I also have the the same under tray from Riché, but I haven't mount it! haha a couple years later... but much have happened in life you know... :) Do you have a complete PDF or any other instructions manuals you could send over? Thanks for the videos!
Hey there! No sorry, no documentation other than the links and things shared in the video descriptions. But you can always reach out to me on Instagram (@wpanikphotog) or Facebook (William Panik) messengers to ask questions and I'll do my best to help!
Hi William - do you remember how you pried the clutch cover off? Seems to be on very tight. Thanks.
Hmm...I do not remember specifically. If you're sure everything is disconnected properly, it's likely the old gasket holding it tight. I would take a rubber mallet and start with some light taps increasing force until it pops free.
Video was spot on William. Appreciate the video steph through. Ordered these covers some time ago and never got around to swapping. FWIW - For the stator side cover, it actually was easier while working on the bike get the siliocone in the wiring grommet, and then have the gasket on the cover before installing vs. having the gasket on the engine side. Thanks again! Hope you still have that bike.
Great! Thank you for the input. I do still have it :) I keep thinking about swapping it out for a Scrambler 1200 but I just can't seem to do it!
Torque on the clutch cover bolts?
Hi Steve - both covers say 10 Nm.
@@wpanik thanks! I broke down and subscribed to the triumph tech info. How did you get the cover off? It’s snug.
@@steveFL450 If it's a subscription which can be cancelled, and if it's actually a Thruxton you have, there's a full version of the shop manual here! drive.google.com/drive/folders/1DOGndAJsmMhbImnQRwOMYiGKYIWsZF8z As for the clutch cover, I don't exactly remember what I did. Once I had re-confirmed that everything is correctly disconnected, I would start tapping on it with a rubber mallet until the seal was broken with the old gasket.
@@wpanik I have a speed twin actually. Thanks for your reply, you’re super helpful.
@@steveFL450 Thanks! I try to be!
Major help, great explanation and great diagram inserts. You were a godsend for doing this on my bobber.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the kind words.
Have those headers stayed that clean or changed colour over time?
They were changing a little but then I got something melted to them. I did a full Scotch Brite of them and they went back to their factory coloring. After a couple of years they're starting to take on a good bronzing again.
Hi. Im having some real problems getting the actuator arm to sit right on my T120, when replacing the clutch cover. Not many people talk about it, but you do on this video! I havent managed to get it right yet, but it does feel like it has gripped the pull rod when fitted. 🤷♂️ Dont know what to do with it. Any tips?
The thing that kept tripping me up was thinking that if I had it in place correctly, I should be able to actuate it with my hand. However, this turned out not to be the case. I needed the mechanical advantage of the clutch lever to actually move it. So I had done it correctly several times without actually realizing it. I would say if it feels like you've got it and it's not freely spinning. Maybe throw 4 or so bolts in to hold the cover on and then give the lever a pull to see if it's working. Keep in mind that you can always put the bike in gear and see whether or not the clutch is actuating without needing to start it!
@@wpanik What did you mean by spinning? What's supposed to be spinning here? I ask because I'm having the hardest time getting that rod inside the cover to catch the button properly and when I think I have it, it's movement goes from 10 (o'clock) to 2 (o'clock) but in reality shouldn't it be going from 3 (oclock) to 12 (oclock)?
Nothing should be freely spinning. That's what I was getting at. If you haven't caught the linkage, the shift lever will be able to spin all the way around because it's not catching anything. Did you remove the actual shift lever from its shaft at any point? That shaft and lever are splined so that you can adjust the actual shift position. That said, if you didn't remove the lever from the shaft, the position wouldn't have changed from where it was when you started. However, if you did separate them, it's possible you just changed the alignment when putting it back together.
Covers look great. Thx for the great vid!
No sweat! Thanks for the kind words.
You can get a hex (Allen) key in and remove the two headlight bolts without removing the fairing. It's a little fiddley but not too bad.
Great tip! Thanks for that!
Thank you for the video, I wasn't sure if I had to clip the zip tie on the hose or not.
Glad it was helpful!
Holy smokes! This was AMAZING to watch. Thank you so much for your time and dedication.
Of course! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the kind words.
Thanks for the video William - I'd like to link it & plunder a couple of stills. Would that be okay with you? Cheers, Chris
Sorry for missing this comment! You are more than welcome to link/use stills.
@@wpanik Thank you William, I do appreciate it. I couldn't get any decent images of the clutch & alternator covers removed, so you've been very helpful. And no need to apologise either, I also appreciate that keeping up with comments can be, erm, somewhat demanding... Anyway, thanks again, William. All the best, Chris
Absolutely sick bike!!!! Im torn between this and a moto guzzi v7. I realize they are totally different bikes....just looking to add to my 2022 bmw r1250rt. I need something to rida around town....and this bike is a front runner! Nice job!!!!
Thanks so much! I have really loved having my Thruxton. I think what I most enjoy is how modern it manages to feel while still having amazing classic looks.
Thank you for the tips. I want decrease preload on my yellow springs with a spring compressor then moving the top ring up two notches. Can it be done without removing the shocks off the bike?
Sorry for missing this comment! I believe that should be possible although I have not actually tried it that way myself.
It's 97 hp actually. I'm saving for a Thruxton r/rs, bit torn between the two.
If the money doesn't matter, might as well go for the RS. But they're certainly similar enough that if money is tight at all, you wouldn't ever notice the difference going with an R!
@@wpanik It's not tight, but i don't know if i can wait that long 🤣
@@maniaq112 Well that's another good reason then! 😂
Ridiculous that this is the top result in Google - needed to know filter orientation and ended up wasting my time waiting for you to actually do somthing, super misleading.
I've been considering doing this same thing to my Bonneville T120 when doing my my autumn oil change but was a bit intimidated until I fund this. Excellent video; gives me the confidence to tackle the job. Your efforts at making this are much appreciated.
Thanks for the kind words! Curious if you wound up making the change!
Hey will, awesome review! Love the bike. You think this is a forever bike for you?
Thanks so much! Unfortunately not. My plan is to never own a "forever bike." Nothing wrong with that, there's just so much it there to explore! If I were going to have one though…this might be it!
Never a waste to change the oil but you always change the filter.
Great Video and your bike is sexy brother.
Thanks so much!
Hey mate first off love the series and love the bike . I did this to my 2020 T120 which is basically same as the thruxton despite minor differences. Once I did the evap kit install i turned the ignition on but the fuel pump wouldnt come on. I read on some triumph forums that the evap kit doesnt work with bikes in the United States (where I live). I contacted the people I bought the Evap kit from and still waiting on a response. Any help?
Hmm…that's interesting. Unfortunately I don't know how helpful I'll be… I'm in the US as well and had no issue. But my bike is also a 2016 so it's totally possible they've updated something in the emissions system… Hopefully this won't come across as condescending, but have you double checked that the fuel pump is reconnected properly? If so, have you checked to see if there's power going to the pump? I realize that if the ECU is cutting it, you probably wouldn't see power in the connector either; but if you are getting power to the pump and it's still not kicking on, maybe it's something in the pump..?
What is the model of the firepower battery you replaced the oem one with?
It was the 490-2531. I have a full parts list in the description of video 4!
What a beautiful bike bro. 💝😍
Thank you so much! I've lived having it.
Very nice bike and video.
Thanks for that! Very kind.
The usefulness of your very professionally done video lives on. My 2020 rs was too blacked out for me so I put brushed covers on it. Bought some used cases and sanded and brushed them with great results. It helped to know what lurked within before turning the bolts. A couple of useful things I discovered. The alternator cover for the rs is different from the other 1200s. Different stator mount. Also when the clutch cover came off and the gear falls loose, the shaft slipped further into the gear and I was unable to pull it back out until I used a magnet stick. The clutch cable reinsertion into the lever was easy if you do it while the cable is not mounted to the cover bolts. Thanks for the tutorial. John
So glad it was helpful for you! Thank you so much for adding your comments on the differences between this and the RS model! I have pinned it so that it can hopefully help others.
This was super helpful - thank you!
So glad I could be of service!
Would have appreciated a WFO ride by to really get a listen to the exhaust mods .
Yeah, that's a good point. I do need a ride-along video! I do have a full exhaust video posted from off the bike which gives a pretty good feel for the sound.
Looks like it's still got the cat on it.... can't cram it in if ya can't get it out. Just saying.
Not sure I understand what you mean. Edit: Ah I get it: air. You're saying there's no reason to allow more air in if the exhaust is blocking it from getting out. Well that is absolutely true, but this bike does not still use the cat. It has the Arrow headers which are straight through, but leave the cat in place as a cross over pipe!
@@wpanik please excuse my ignorance of that particular exhaust system BUT IMHO the cat is still restrictive even as as crossover it does however balance exhaust pressures but at the cost of a couple kilos of weight. When you've been so effective putting other areas of the bike on a diet. Your bike your call keep up the good work !
No sweat! You're exactly right and I get questions on it frequently. I do plan to replace it with a simple pipe at some point.
