Please do not listen to this doctor. I grew up on the ghetto side of Kauai and I've been hearing this argument for my entire life. Furthermore, the archipelago never had a common culture or language or political system before Kamehameha united the islands with the help of the white man. There were disparate chieftains on every island who were constantly at war with each other. It was no paradise- that came later with the marketing efforts of Madison Avenue. Most people in Hawaii who call themselves Hawaiians are not Hawaiian at all. In fact, Hawaiians represent maybe one percent of the population of Hawaii. The remaining brown people, who often want to be confused as Hawaiians, were brought over by the white man to work on plantations. The plantation owners paid over 90% of the taxes in the state.
