I did find it endearing that Revy insisted that Rock go see his family because they were ‘normal’ and he didn’t come from a sh*ty one like hers. His dad couldn’t have any worse than hers, otherwise Rock would be very different.

I think that @TauntingEveryone7208 has the right of it. Yamato isn't trans male, s/he is trans Oden. And what being Oden means in this context is no-one's business but Yamato's. They land somewhere on the non-binary spectrum, and it isn't for us to put a label on it.

Yamato is a woman. She is not trans. Confirmed by Oda. End of story. There is no discussion or debate. There is only a few obsessive weirdos that want to apply an LGBT label to everything. That's all.

to me Yamato's identity as Oden is far more deep seated than any gender identity, they aren't like any irl trans man (that I know of) but their identity as a woman also isn't nearly as important to them as identifying as Oden. they're sort of non-binary, not in the way that most irl non-binary people identify with it as a label, but in the sense that gender isn't really part of their identity. as for what English pronouns to use for Yamato, it's both irrelevant and impossible not to address. Oda is Japanese, and the idea of 'third-person pronouns = personal gender identity" isn't really a concept in the Japanese language, in part because third-person pronouns are barely ever used in Japanese but also because gender is expressed through first person as you brought up. so Oda most likely never considered whether Yamato would be a he, a she, or a they in English, it's even less of a part of Yamato's identity than gender. and there are some exceptions where Japanese creators publicly clarify which pronouns should be used in English (for example the Japanese Guilty Gear developers actually said "in English you would use they/them" for Testament in the livestream that revealed them as DLC for Strive) and probably a lot more where localization teams privately asked the original authors what English pronouns to use while they were translating their work. I don't think there's any proof that Oda was specifically asked about it like that, but I guess he/him would still be accurate even if Yamato doesn't identify as a man (even in Japanese he uses masculine 1st person pronouns, but there are still women who use boku or ore and identify as women, so it's less of a statement about gender identity and more about presentation - honestly as a trans woman with no attachment to she/her or any third person pronouns I highkey wish English was like that lol) but ultimately I don't think it really matters what pronouns we English speakers use for Yamato

I mean regardless or anything, Yamato is a girl, who is just super obsessed with Oden. Thats honestly the big thing for it. Kaido has no real care, so yeah since Oden was a man he just kinda rolled with it ig and called her son, he just wanted her to fall in allegiance with him and not rebel. Same with Yamato with the pronouns, Oden was a man, she clearly knew that, and since she wanted to be him she merely adopted those. I mean shes been isolated for years, having her only form of contact with another person being the few warrriors who died fighting Kaido, that one man who gave her food, and Ace. Then there was the book from Oden of his exploits, which is how she grew her fascination with him. So she wanted to basically be him, since he was her Idle. So she obviosly had no real care, nor any further knowledge of anything complicated with gender, at least by our standards, personally I simply dont follow with Trans but that is besides the point. Just to be clear. But the point is she just rolled with it. If Oda were to say otherwise than wtv, i just think its foolish for people to argue with Oda about a character that HE MADE. Sry for the rant. Just my rough thoughts and opinion. Also i didnt take any historical aspects into account, just based on the show itself. Only think that could technically be taken into account that bleeds into real life is the Shogun needing to be a man and Kaido urging Yamato to be an heir.

Currently Yamato is he/him so trans am not certain about the other part either trans man or trans oden. For most people man or woman is the part Yamamoto is referring to as oden but we as well have non binary with masc and fem attributes. Until Oda explicitly clarifies it. I think both sides are correct since we are all speculating at best. So here is my option, Yamato is trans in its simplicity. Now their identity is complex due to how they express which is not as commonly stated, or most trans people don't often express their appeals since it might come out as someone wanting to be someone else. To an extent most trans people have someone's they appeal to look like or features of someone's they admire to have the identity its self is the clue here trans - woman/man/non-binary is inspiration of the identity the trans part is self explanatory. But it isn't the actual intent of their identity or embodiment of them.

Something we do know for sure, is that Yamato was heavily abused mentally and physically since an early age, with a clear desperation to escape her situation and find any outlet and reason to dream and maintain her sanity. As such, i doubt she's got the best perspective of herself, who she is, and what she actually wants, at least till she gets out there more. Genuinely can't believe people use Kaido as an example to support the trans argument, as if Kaido isn't the textbook example of a "I wanted a son, but got a daughter instead" character.

Oda made Yamato and is usually very clear about his characters of the lgbtq Yamato is different and is a women but is more like women that are an eldest daughter calling themselves “somebody’s son” because they are capable of doing a lot of things males do which is similar to being the eldest of any family and have to handle a lot more responsibility compared to younger sibilings

My opinion on Yamato being trans is the same as Luffy being aroace, in that Oda kinda wrote that on accident. Their traits all come together in just the right way to make the perfect relatable vibe to people of their respective (alleged) identities. A lot of trans men relate to admiring a man so much you realize you are one, and a lot of aroace people (including myself) relate to highly emphasizing platonic relationships, and faking attraction in order to fit in (citation, the SBS where Oda explains why Hancock’s power didn’t work on Luffy)

The Kuina detail isn't correct. It's not about sexism, it's about biology. She says that Zoro will naturally surpass her, due to basic biology of men developing stronger bodies than women. Swordsmanship is a physically demanding endeavor, so a stronger body will innately have the advantage. Her father was worried about her being able to take over the dojo for that same reason. She was outclassing Zoro, but they were still kids. Once puberty kicks in, Zoro (and even some of the other male students) would start winning matches against her.

Yamato is a female-bodied woman who was assigned man at birth by Kaido that also happens to identify as Oden. (So in a way Yamato is a very rare case of a female bodied trans woman, which does not happen much irl, but there is at least one case of a male bodied person who was assigned female at birth but later identified as male) /j

Even if Wano has these sexist views on women, Kaido isn't from Wano. He doesn't respect the people, the culture or the land of wano, so why should he respect their views on what gender a rightful heir should have? Yamato is stronger than anyone in wano and that is all that matters to kaido. Plus one of the only people in the world who can equal him in strength is big mom, a woman. There isn't a scene where he implies forcing a gender on yamato. Having that as a headcanon is fine, but him forcing a genderrole on his son isn't shown in the text. Sure, yamtos self referrential pronouns can be used by women too, but the difference between a tomboy or big mom and yamato is the way other poeple refer to them and yamato gets consistently he/him'd by everyone around him. And ignoring the cannon by saying "Luffy is just silly like that" isn't a good argument. Him not expressing gender dysphoria about his body or clothes also doesn't really mean anything, since as you also alluded to, gender dysphoria isn't necessary for someone to be trans. And yamato does express gender euphoria, for example in the bathhouse scene. Yamato being so hellbent on being Oden in the beginning is kind of a character flaw, as shown in his character arc. Yamatos story is about him finding himself between all the expectations his father puts on him and which he puts upon himself by inheriting Odens will. Oden brings him comfort and Yamato idolizes him, but he also needs to realize what his own role in life needs to be apart from oden. Oden wanted to explore the world, so Yamato has to do the same and he wants to join Luffy. But he then realizes that this isn't the right thing for him to do at the moment and that he wants to stay and protect Wano, something that Oden chose not to do. Oden was a man, so yamato is a man too. But yamato realizes for himself that being a dude kinda rocks, so he enters the bathhouse together with the men without saying anything like "well that's what oden would've done", because he grew past his obsession and found what makes him happy and what doesn't. The bathouse scene also takes place after his main character arc in wano in which he starts to discover more about himself outside of his influences. The vivre cards aren't canon material made by Oda and get stuff wrong. They said that shanks was an emperor when he first met Luffy, which is proven wrong by the manga saying he became an emperor six or so years ago. And going by all the covorspreads then Chopper would be a one piece girl too. Yamato gets marketed as a girl, which sucks and should be done better, but that too is outside the realm of canon material. But i do wanna thank you for speaking positively on trans people and the other trans characters in one piece, cause as a trans girl I don't feel welcome in most one piece spaces. So thanks for being good faith and denouncing transphobia. Which is why I'm writing this to maybe change your views on some of these things, because I do think all the canon manga material is pretty explicit about yamato wanting to at least be one of the boys. I really like the wide variety of trans represantation and expression found in one piece, and thanks for mentioning Morley! I love her with all my heart <3

The confusion stems for a translation error, and the fact that several activists have made their way into these industries and have been known to change dialogue in order to further their agenda. But the fact that Yamato was featured in a spreadsheet of only female characters, that her official data card states Female, and she was introduced as Kaido's Daugther, pretty much settles this discussion.

I agree with everything you just said except we can use she/her pronouns. We should use he/him pronouns till he says otherwise.

Someone tells me they identify as he/him, all other opinions wouldn't matter after that point trans or not, fictional character or not historical context or not, i'd respect these pronouns and not look for an excuse to why i should use other pronouns, if Yamato's arc is about accepting himself as a women at the end as a way of being more himself and to stop trying to be someone else, then until he say's "i am a women and call me she/her". until then she'll be a man to me idc if oda himself calls him a woman.

Idk what it's like to be trans either, but pronouns like they them are dumb but ur pretty funny, I'll say i have no issues with a character being trans i just want it to be official and not just annoying fans pushing their headcanon otherwise I think it could be interesting to have a trans character that's official just depends how it's portrayed.

Disney princess oh man!!! All yamato needs to do is sing! Just seem like a never ending debate even when creators say this some just don't want it to be that way. Both bridget and yamato are characters that caused a lot of division and showed 2 different outcomes when a creator confirmed what is canon. Overall its an interesting video with some great points hopefully no one harasses you like crazy for this.

Yamato's gender is obviously Kouzuki Oden. In all seriousness, I would still state Yamato is trans but not a trans man. Transgender is an umbrella term. It encompass anyone not identifying with their gender at birth. Japan also has a much more complicated structure with their gender identity that does not mapped well from western culture views. I cannot remember the exact term but there ar people who identifies as one gender but still see themselves as a another gender. Yamato could also be an example of X gender which the closest comparison in western lens is non-binary
