ICOM IC775DSP Eeek, what do all those knobs do?
An introduction to this incredible radio for those like me who know nothing and can't make it work! This radio has foxed me a couple of times now when controls have been accidentally adjusted, here's why.

Morse code keys talk about themselves
มุมมอง 4442 หลายเดือนก่อน
Morse code key party. Using 22 different Morse keys to send a short message, each key get a turn. Very nice to use them all, don't often get the chance. The code is slow, about 13 words per minute, as I'm not an expert and I found it a challenge switching from one key to another so quickly. Hope you find some of the keys interesting.

Testing the mk11 version of Eddystone's first production transistor communications receiver. Remarkable that this set still performs so well after 50 years. Had to replacing the capacitors in the power unit but remarkably all the original RF transistor are working. Not the best radio for the amateur bands but still a very good general purpose radio and built to last a life time.

I own an early FT-101 with no letter designation and this helps tremendously. Thank you.
Great radios i have one shame about those odd knob's Mike
Had this radio in 2015, regrett selling it now. It had flickering secondary display which could not be rectified.
Excellent. Thank you!
Nice old radio! The "transmit" button does actually put it into transmit, like all the other Icom radios. Remember if you are on SSB there will be no power going out when you are in transmit till you input some audio either via the microphone on the line/audio in connector. A quick test would be to put it into AM or FM mode, then there will be output when you press the transmit button. I love this radio because it has a true dual receiver including a second VFO knob. I used 2 of these radios for years as my contest station.
I hadn't thought of putting it in AM or FM mode. Good idea. Although I imagine you'd get a reduced power out, not the full 200 watts. But would be ok for tuning a manual ATU. You'd have to stop the internal auto tuner kick in though.
Very nice video, many thanks! Robert K5TPC
...is your camera from 1979 too?
Good comment! Well the camera is a 2010 Lumix, so it was recorded in 1280x720 at 30fps. We had TalkTalk internet here, at best 1M download, 100k up. I edited and tried to upload, gave up on 4th try. Re-edited to VGA, that only took 4 hours to upload. The joy of the internet!
Nicely done !! Pete G4TFH
Which was the easiest (? most pleasant) to use?
Well the big brass, Kent straight key has a very nice feeling and is easy to use. I preefer a paddle, so the 1950s, grey, Vibroplex twin paddle with an iambic keyer is great fun. But there several that are just as nice, it depends on what your doing I guess. Mike
Your thumb and finger make much distance when operating the paddles.
Yes, not the best bit of sending I've ever done! I found it quite hard to get the key in shot and lite correctly, had to have my other arm around the camera tripod to hold the paddle still. Not the best position to send in. Some the keys hadn't been used in a long time and needed a lot of pressure to make a decent contact. Just thought it would be nice to use them all before they get sold off for our house move. Mike

Happy days; I used to own an FT101E, magic rig!
Very informative and great timing for me, as I have recently acquired a Kenwood TS520 from the 70s era. Thank you!
I have the Kenwood TS520....caused me no end of issues in the HT cage but since changing the bottles and neutralising them been very nice to use. 73 de VK2AOE
That's not ladder-line. Ladder-line actually looks like a ladder. That's window-line. I once helped a 14 yo girl get her Amateur Extra license. But she was on her own with the 20 wpm CW as I didn't know CW at the time. A few days after she got her license her dad bought her a used FT-101for HF and she asked me to come over and show her how to tune up the tube outputs since the rig came without instructions. I found it amusing that an Amateur Extra needed me, a tech class ham to show her how to use her rig, since I wasn't licensed to play with the rig that she didn't know how to use unless she was there as the control op. :)
Excellent timing, I bought one of these last week!
Thanks for renewing my intrest in my old FT-101B ! I haven't paid much attention to it lately, and such great transceivers need to be used and given some TLC !! Fred - W4FJF. 73's

Get a mobile phone!
Haha :-) Well amusingly, the manual says that, with the 12 volt option this radio can be used mobile (what, really?) and in voice mode it does do telephony. So, maybe, it could be called a 'mobile phone'? People were obvoiusly a lot stronger in the 70's! However, think I'll stick to my Motorola for everyday use. Cheers
Thanks for these videos! A friend gave me an FT-101 a few years ago, but I haven’t figured out how to use it. I powered it up, and it receives well, but I wasn’t sure if it transmitted or if I had it set correctly. I have a general license, but I haven’t (successfully) transmitted on HF yet. I’ll re-watch your videos and try again. 🙌
Thanks for the comment. I do hope it helps you to get one these great old radios back on the air. Good luck - Mike
Very good.
Hi, I've just pulled one of these from my late fathers loft. It's immaculate, are they worth much?
Well that depends, more if it works, I would guess. I've seen them go in the UK for anything between £20 and £150. There are enthusiasts out there. Put it on Ebay 'for parts, no returns', but comment if it appears to work, to stop the scammers. Good luck!
Thank you so much
Brilliant big and small changes and definitely gave ideas for our Microlite. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the feedback. Hope you have many happy camping trip with yours! Cheers Mike

Is it details of the glass clips you require? I obviously cannot know what clips are fitted to your greenhouse but I would guess most types would work. I did a search on Ebay and there are many types available at reasonable prices. See link below. Salam - Mike
Basically that’s a really helpful video! Thank you!
Hi Mike B. I've bought mini snipe nosed pliers, but I'm still struggling to remove the square metal clips. Are you putting the pliers behind the main part of the clip (to get to the back piece) or nipping the back piece against the front? I hope I'm making sense. Btw, my greenhouse is an 8ft x 12ft (with three horizontal rows of glass on the roof)
As an afterthought, what is the best way to clean the glass please? Any help will be gratefully received. Thanks
I used soapy water and a soft bristle brush to get the green stuff off. A microfibre cloth to finish if it's not going to rain!
Thanks for the video....basicly...😅
Thanks for this well made and informative radio. I have one of these bought in a job lot from a SK sale. I don't know if works yet but your information is both helpful and inspiring. Best 73 G0ACE
Thanks. This radio was part of a batch modified by REME in the late 1960s, for use by government staff to run on domestic mains, as the vibrator PSU is noisey and unreliable. The mod feeds 6.3V AC onto the heater connections on the transformer. Don't use the front connector as the wires are too small. The vibrators syncronous rectifier contacts are replace by a pair of 1N4003 diodes and an extra electrolytic smooting capacitor is required. The alternative is an electronic vibrator replacement. The 'phones' connection on pins L & K on the front connector will run a small speaker directly. Good luck - Mike
Best thing to do is download the assembly drawings which gives you the glass sizes and where they should be go that’s what I did and it made the whole process a lot easier
I found a site stating that the radio needs and antenna 10 to 30 meters long but they seem impracticable to me because itd surely be flopping about everywhere
Hi. Modern FM & DAB radios use frequencies in the VHF range (100 to 200MHz). At these frequencies an efficient antenna can be less than a metre long. Vintage HF radios use much lower frequencies, in the low MHz range. So an effective antenna needs to be around 10 to 30M. so 1MHz has a wavelength of 300m & 7MHz has a wavelength of 40M. This requires a length of wire usually hooked up to a tree or similar high point outside and an earth connection (which can be a length of wire laid along thre ground). If you Google 'HF simple wire antennas' you will see examples of typical setups. Regards - Mike
@@mikeb1043 thank you Mike , that explains it quite clearly, hopefully I can get the best out of it
@@mikeb1043 Well I've managed to get a sort of stable connection to Radio Europe in the Netherlands so its working. Crazy for a 79 year old radio
If youve still got this or just know how its done, how have you wired up your connections, for the aerial and earth? Im not in the radio hobby but i have a PCR 1 with the PSU however signal is weak. Best signal i got was by using the old aerial cable on the roof of my house
I had an S750 here for repair many years ago and when I'd finished the job I didn't want to give it back, it performed very well indeed. I came across what I think must have been an EB35 in somebody's shack once, similar in appearance to the EC10 but it had VHF as well and I made an unsuccessful offer for it, although I wasn't as impressed with it as the S750 it was at least an Eddystone and I think every radio hobbyist should own at least one Eddystone in their lifetime, hope I get lucky soon.
Hi Tip… Reduce RF gain when using BFO in order to balance up the ssb signal against the bfo level. Like the FRG7, a knob twiddlers delight and I have both! Regards Dave G4BTI OCT 23.
Many thanks
I have two greenhouses like that and I would like to make one big one, is that possible? Thanks
Hi. Well, in theory no, but it depends on your mechanical capabilities. Certainly not without pitfalls I would say. You could possibly remove the glass in the back walls, put the two back to back, line them up and mark and drill a series of holes around the frame. You could then nut and bolt the two together. I can't remember if the roof overhangs the frame. If so you would need some sort of spacer between them (square section UPVC perhaps). You would need to put some sealant in the join to make it weatherproof. There would of course be the original aluminium frames from the backs, in the middle inside. Don't remove those as they will make the structure rigid and stop it flexing around in a wind. If you do it be very careful, lots of opportunities for injuring yourself. Good luck - Mike
@@mikeb1043 thanks a lot.
That was basically very helpful. Thanks! 😁
Great video! Thank you
you are putting the glass clips in wrong mate.

Thanks very much for this!
Basically no mention of removing glass from window or actually removing the window from greenhouse.😢
At about 2:30 into the video I remove a glass pane. Hope that helps (basically!)
excellent! :)
i admire your patience and to detail
I knew nothing about greenhouse construction until watching this very helpful video. My son, who handily lives next door, had a 6'x8' Eden greenhouse he did not need, use or want. I grew some great Alicante beef, and Roma plum tomatoes in it this year, a pepper and cucumber. It also had a fruiting grapevine inside, some 40+ years old. I have 'adopted' both. With 50 panes removed (none broken!), my wife and I lifted the whole frame, minus door, over the 5' hedge (not bad for two mid-70's OAPs, photos to prove!) and it now sits on its new flagged base. Seals out, moss removed, wire brushed then pressure-washed, glass cleaned, it will look great. I re-planted the vine outside this time to go in through a bottom corner, hoping it will survive. Just door, window and glass to replace - and the missing door runners! Yes, a window-fixing bolt sheared but will swap for another where a normal bolt will do. Many thanks, Mike, for the time and trouble taken. Great job - basically 🙂
Hi Malcolm. Thank for sharing that. Really nice to hear the video was helpful. Good luck with the tomatoes - sounds great! Cheers - Mike
@@mikeb1043 . Hi Mike. Thanks for the reply. Yes, what I learned was very useful. Glass all fitted, I have just completed insulating the insides with (large) bubble-wrap to extend the growing season. I hope to try my 80W caravan solar panel and leisure battery with a new 12V heater. For fortnightly caravan stays, I made a home-made gravity water irrigation system with a £1 B&Q bucket and spare 4mm pneumatic tubing drilled. 🙂. I hope to get off to an early start, some things already started, like garlic and broad beans, Also 3 mushroom growing kits on the way. I just have a problem trying to source two replacement sliding door rollers (about 7/8" dia x 3/8" wide, with 3/8" bore) which are completely missing, just the studs left. All I can find have a radiused groove on the outside and mine looks to need a male 90 degree vee profile to match the female vee'd track runner. May be obsolete now, but will make/have made if needs be. Looking forward to next year, Best wishes.
