"Hearts and Flowers" and "Whispering Hope" by The Taylor Trio, 1917
00:00 Hearts and Flowers (Theodore Moses-Tobani)
03:39 Whispering Hope (Hawthorn)
This record features an unknown trio, performing a pair of moving instrumentals. "Hearts & Flowers" is familiar to me from its use in a number of cartoons and other films, as a generic "heartbreaking" music cue.
From Wikipedia:
"Hearts and Flowers" (subtitle: "A New Flower Song") is a song composed by Theodore Moses-Tobani (with words by Mary D. Brine) and published in 1893 by Carl Fischer Music.
The famous melody is taken from the introductory 2/4 section of "Wintermärchen" Waltzes Op. 366 (1891) by the Hungarian composer Alphons Czibulka. Tobani arranged the piece in a 4/4 song form as Hearts and Flowers, a New Flower Song, Op. 245.
The song as a vocal number was soon forgotten but the instrumental version gained popularity in its own right and it is in this form that it remains well known to this day. Tobani also arranged the tune as a waltz, featured in a medley published in 1900 entitled Beauties Charms, although this arrangement is now seldom heard.
"Hearts and Flowers" has an association in popular culture as melodramatic photoplay music. The practice of using the selection as a dramatic cue is documented as early as 1911, although complaints that the tune was becoming overplayed crop up as early as 1913 and 1914, and by 1915, the piece was being called "time worn".

    Excellent!!! These are lyrically sweet tunes, musically rendered without clichés. I had never before heard the second melodic strain of the 1919 standard "Alice Blue Gown ; " it has always been omitted on the many recordings I have heard of it. Thank you!!! My one gentle suggestion for improvement would be this: Going forward, do you think you could experiment with your sound capturing / engineering / frequency equalization, somewhat? I am noticing that there ought to be much better balancing between high and low. I am hearing very little of the lower end of the spectrum. As a result, this upload sounds rather ''tinny," which is unfortunate. While I have very much enjoyed all of your postings that I have heard in terms of repertoire, this same sound quality issue has been consistent. If you can rectify this, it will make the sound much better. I have discovered from years of listening to old records that they are capable of giving forth with very rich sound, and I am willing to believe that to be true in this instance as well. I hasten to assure you that I am not discouraged, and neither should you be, on account of anything I have said. It was NOT meant in that way. I shall maintain my subscription and check back for more offerings. Warmly yours, Richard Laine.

    Info: Circa 1906, Arthur James O'Neill in Chicago, IL, launched the Busy Bee Amberized Disc Records and phonographs. The discs were pressed from products of American Record Company (H&S), Columbia, Leeds, and Zonophone. Busy Bee pressings were made as late as 1909, making Busy Bee rather short-lived. This was an early scam that relied on the fact that the machine could be sold for cheaper, but the machine had a lug that prevented regular records from laying flat on the platter, meaning that special Busy Bee discs had to be purchased at a premium, which had a rectangular hole below the foot of the label. As for the second round hole on your specimen, I don't know, and it's not supposed to be present. "1338" is the number on your disc, and the announcer at the intro of the record sounds like that of other examples of American Records (the Hawthorne, Sheble, and Prescott product) I have heard online.

    • @js4032yt

      Busy Bee also made cylinders, starting from when they were founded in 1904, that used a different inside diameter along with a corresponding mandrel on the machines (which were modified Columbia Graphophones) that prevented standard Columbia or Edison cylinders from fitting.

    • @js4032yt
      @js4032yt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In Chicago, many other companies jumped on the bandwagon with the "Standard" (½" hole), "Harmony" (¾" hole), "United"(1 ½" hole), and "Aretino" (pronounced Air-a-tee-no) (3" hole, largest ever made) record labels, which all sourced from Columbia (though Aretino started with Leeds records, and was also an O'Neill venture). Those labels used different size holes (and corresponding spindles) for the same idea. "Standard" started sometime in the early 1900s (Wikipedia says Oct. 1901, which is inaccurate since Columbia discs were introduced Nov. 1901), along with Harmony and United. Aretino started in 1907, and shut down in 1916, while the other three companies became "Consolidated" before shuttering in 1918.

      The same model used by those "premium scheme" labels is still used for other things, namely DRM-secured ink cartridges for printers forcing consumers to buy the manufacturer's expensive cartridges for their often low-cost printers. Just like how people try to bypass the DRM of ink today, people back then either modified the records or the machines to allow the playback of normal records.

      The comments and replies I have made are replacements for the old and less concise originals (now removed) that were made in 2023. The comments made rely on my knowledge collected from online sources like Wikipedia, TH-cam, and a few others. As for the record itself, it, and the other "premium scheme" discs, were all made with a standard groove (not a Pathé or Edison style hill and dale), and the content is a nicely done march tune, well performed and recorded, especially considering the primitive equipment used at the time.

      I found some musicologists who referred to this sort of composition as Art Music, which is vague enough to be almost meaningless. It does differentiate this from "classical, "orchestral," or "popular music," though. I'd say the composer is having a bit of mildly derisive fun aimed at bobby-soxers and "jitterbugs." This record was recorded at the end of 1945 and released in 1946.

      My research suggests that "Elsie Jean" was a house "nom de plume" for Century Music Publishing in New York. They specialized in selling books of "musical stories" for children, all credited to Elsie Jean. This continued until the 1940s, at least, as these booklets (or replicas) can be found on eBay and elsewhere. Edit: I'm taking it back! "Miss Elsie Jean" has an obituary in the New York Times, June 11, 1953, where she was credited with writing the words for "hundreds of musical and other works for children." She's an actual person who wrote the words, at least, to these songs.
