The woman interviewer was so sweet to Gary. He needed a patient woman. I see God gave him a great daughter, too. “He Was There All The Time”-perhaps most special song to me Now that I have seen the whole video, I see he had a great wife, too.

I was a personal friend and protege of Gary's for several years. I guess I knew him about as good as anyone. I've seen his highs and lows. I think this tribute was well deserved and a good way to see Gary off. I have a lot to say, but I want to first make a comment on what the gentleman spoke about in his conversation with Gary. "..you should get the victory about that...' It was good of him to repent later of his misconception. I'll add that the uber Christian church community has little idea about how to be open and sincere. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. I've heard Gary say that many times. He had little to do with 'profession without possession.' I'll include a lyric from one of his Gospel songs: "those without stature become the salt of the earth in a true test". He was one of them. I want people to know, as a close friend of Gary's, that he was the most devout Christian I ever encountered. He had a few deep inner issues because of his strange beginnings, his past indulgences, marriages and his strange path in life. He could be a mystery at times. He was also hilarious lots of times -- depending on his moods. (Quote, "I've been awake since 1954!" or "I'm not well! Neither am I!" I enjoyed the privilege of reading some of his personaI writings and songs that he never finished. He was a wise and seasoned man of God, with an open and humble heart. More like Christ than anyone I ever encountered within his circle. I wish I would've been at this 'tribute' meeting, and had a chance to share the real GSP with many of this crowd. (I'm notorious about being up-front and plain spoken - somewhat like Gary S.). To me, this tribute was more of a lame church service, to be honest. There should have been so much more content, and many more people. Nevertheless, I know he would've greatly appreciated it. I'm happy to see that a group of Christians paid homage to him. It was necessary, because it was the Christians who hurt him the most. Speaking of which, Gary understood all kinds of people. He had a real heart for the downtrodden and the hurting. He was charitable and put his money with his mouth was. He was a real weird guy lots of times, yet very serious and sober-minded about the music, and about the Things of God. I respected him for that. I've worked with a lot of professional Nashville musicians and producers over the past 35 years, but I never experienced anyone like Gary. Never. Never will in this life. Anyone who knew Gary would agree unequivocally. Working with him on his music, I found the genius of Paxton on so many levels. Genius. No better way to describe him. A sane walking mad-man who had so much to share from a genuine heart for God. I learned so much from him -- not only in the studio, and more than anything -- about life and living. He wasn't a typical "preacher" guy. His attire and hair would automatically impress you that he wasn't. He wasn't afraid to attract attention. I feel he was making a statement the few times he would 'go out' in public. He was "the Pax". The "White Tornado". The "Soul-a-billy Kid". "GarPax" "Grand-pa Rock" To me, a legend. I remember the one time we went to the National Quartet Convention (a religious gathering of Gospel singers) back in the 80s. He had a few Gospel songs he wanted to "pitch". He went dressed (without the weird beard) in his usual UN-usual jump suit and flashy blazer, with light blue hair that shot out from both sides of his head (and don't forget the red cowboy boots -- 1/3rd of his whole attire). He got all kinds of strange looks, and most everyone tried to stay away from him. UNTIL they found out who he was. People surrounded him quickly. It was so fun to watch and I laughed 'till I couldn't. He was a hero to many in the Gospel (and secular) world. He was working on a new solo project when I saw him last. He was getting ready to record "I'm Just A Nobody, Trying To Tell Everybody, About Somebody" I remember how that song greatly moved him. He commented, "This is how I truly feel...just a nobody wanting to tell everybody about Jesus." And he did. When meeting people he was never shy about telling others "Jesus loves you". Jesus was his life. Experiencing Gary Paxton was a genuine joy and inspiration. I cried like a baby when I learned he was gone. There's an empty space in my heart for him to this day. He was family, and always will be.

I was a protege of Gary's for 15 years. He's been gone now for a few years, but I have a wealth of humorous and profound times shared with him. Gary had a strong work ethic. He was what we would call a "hustler". He could sell himself better than anyone I knew. I appreciated his unusual sense of humor, especially when we were working in the studio together. He'd always say, "I've been awake since 1954." or (in high voice)"I'm not well" (low voice)"Neither am I". He had a million stories to tell about his life and the people in his career. A truly fascinating man. He was family to me. I miss him. There are so many more stories he could share not mentioned here. He never put up with wining and belly-aching. He worked with everybody, and was a solo artist for just about every record company in existence. He lived through so much, and became a Christian back in the early 70s. A devout man to the Lord. He kept an open Bible in every room of his studio, and had a library full of personal sermon notes and songs. I have a few of them. We love you Gary. I'll never forget you. Mr. "Soul-a-billy Kid"..."the White Tornado"..."the Pax"..."GarPax"...It's sad to me that there is no memorial nor book, nor documentary about Gary, only pictures and stories.

This is gold! Thankyou for this interview! We raised our kids on Garys' christian music! Our kids are recording artists themselves and all in life changing christian ministry. Fantastic precise musician. I'm just so sorry to hear about the pain of his childhood but God is so kind! Jesus Is My Lawyer In Heaven...etc. My son co-wrote Hillsong Praise Him. They did a worship cd(one or two) in Nashville and they're music is heard in churches all over North America. The Royalroyal. Also Alexander Fairchild - love songs. My husband and all my kids are fabulous song writers!

That movie has incorrectly and slanderously portrayed my father and Tammy Faye as having had a sexual relationship. I can ASSURE everyone that NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. I was in the studio ! Also, the gossip mags cropped a photo down to just Dad and Tammy Faye, but, the original photo shows 6-8 people with their arms on each others' shoulders as in a sports team huddle, thus, it was a lie that they created to sell gossip magazines ! I have no doubt that Tammy Faye appreciated the fact that Dad validated her music ministry by producing her projects, thereby, causing her to feel special and valued.

@@dalewbrown You're welcome, Dale. The damage done to both the Paxton and Bakker families is like a ripple effect; it effects many lives. You haven't lived until you are shopping at the grocery store and see a loved one on the cover of myriad gossip mags, and, with a photo that was cropped down from 6-8 people, down to just 2 people so as to create the illusion of sin.
