I Visit Raby Castle... One of England's Finest Medieval Castle's...
~
A powerful exterior with a superb collection of art and artefacts.
Raby is without doubt one of the most impressive intact castles in the North of England. Built in the 14th century by the powerful Neville family, it has a long history. Home to Cecily Neville, mother of two kings of England, it was also the scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North and a Parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War.
The approach to the castle is particularly beautiful as its towers appear and disappear amongst the trees of the surrounding parkland with its ornamental lakes and herds of deer. The exterior with medieval towers, terrace and embattled walls dates back to the 11th Century.
Originally moated and accessed via a drawbridge, the Castle was built as a palace fortress.
It is characterised by a sequence of massive towers linked by curtain walls. It’s completeness is of national significance as a largely single-phase structure, with one twelfth century survival (Bulmer’s Tower).
The Nevilles, responsible for building the 14th century Castle which still stands today, continued to live at Raby until 1569 when, after the failure of the Rising of the North, the Castle and its lands were forfeited to the Crown. The 6th Earl of Westmorland was the last of the Nevilles to live at Raby Castle.
He fled from Raby in 1569 after The Rising of the North and died in exile in Holland in 1601.
In 1626, Sir Henry Vane the Elder, Member of Parliament and important member of Charles I’s household, purchased Raby from the Crown. The Vane family still own Raby, the present owner being the 12th Lord Barnard.
Behind its powerful fortifications, Raby Castle is our family home with many Medieval, Regency and Victorian interiors. We also have a range of art, textiles and furniture from England and Europe dating from the 17th to the 20th Century.
Family portraits by leading artists, 18th and 19th Century sporting paintings, including work by Sir Alfred Munnings, and important pictures such as ‘The Circumcision of Christ’ and ‘The Adoration of the Magi’ by Luca Giodano can be seen around the Castle.
Porcelain and sculpture ranging from Victorian copper cooking utensils to The Raby Tapestry on the floor of the Barons’ Hall are showcased in our rooms.
The 18th century Walled Garden has been recently remodelled by renowned garden designer Luciano Giubbilei with Lady Barnard. Together, they have laboured to create a stunning 5-acre vision, including the estate’s well-known yew hedges and the iconic Raby fig. In doing so, they have retained the gardens’ distinctive spirit; one in which the character of Raby and its rich history is deeply embedded.
Beautifully framed views and an unrivalled air of tranquillity have put Raby on the map of notable English gardens, and will delight horticultural novices and enthusiasts alike.
The Vinery proudly present handcrafted dishes and treats inspired or sourced from the beautiful Raby Estate.
Once home to thriving grapevines, these historic buildings are steeped in heritage. Today, we honour this legacy by carefully crafting each item with care and dedication, in collaboration with the estate’s skilled gardeners.

I Stay in a Suite, in an Edwardian Mansion in Northumberland, Slaley Hall.
Flying out to New York myself in Feb (staying Lower East Side in Chinatown) but opted for Virgin Atlantic (also made the mistake of opting for the coach from Newcastle to Heathrow to save a bit of cash-mistake as BA prices are now cheaper than when I booked everything in November), opted for 7 days after initially planning 3 days. Been watching various tourist videos about NY and there's just so much I want to see now, so had to extend the number of days-also want to check out the neighbouring boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens etc). Really looking forward to it.
Sorry I cannot understand anything you guys are saying in the echo chamber of the stairwell. What is the point of that?
Fantastic vid got a studio for me and the dog in January looking forward tae it
Thanks buddy and thank you for watching. Enjoy your stay in January!
Will be there over 2 days, thx for sharing, looks amazing
Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching
Alreet fellow Gerodies. Great video. Have made the same trip (NCL-LHR-JFK) 5 times now (last time in March this year), and going back in March 2025. I also prefer the LIRR into Manhattan, but take it to Penn Station. Have stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel close to Times Square, on W44th and 8th Ave. Will check out your follow up video too. Love New York, though and can't wait to get back over there.
Ahh thanks for watching buddy... Yeah it's an amazing place, had always wanted to go in the summer, was incredible!

Hi - really enjoyed your other 2 NY videos but much of this one has no sound ? Shame as the footage looks great. Maybe TH-cam censored for background music ?

How s the beach?
Awesome video
BenalmÁdena, please.
Stayed there ,not again. Far better places imo
Although it is a lovely hotel, the size of it and so many areas would be tiring to walk around as well as confusing. The use of so much glass on the roof area with sun beds, I would find nauseating, anyone with vertigo would not enjoy. It would suit young fit people, not those getting on in years. I found Benamadena too busy and prefer quieter more natural environments. The large entertainment seating areas are also rather overwhelming.
We all have our preferences , some would prefer more busy or touristy places , some like my wife and i, we also prefer natural green sceneries more since we are from southern Greece, there not much green sceneries there, at least where we live. In term of hotels, when im traveling hotel sizes never bother me as long as i can get a good price,im happy😂

was in Disneyland Paris in May and had a great time. It was my 4th trip there since 2001, but I had not been back in 20 years. At the Disneyland park not much had changed, but since I was taking family who had never been it was great to see it new through their eyes. The Studio Park had changed a lot and I was amazed at the difference since I was last there in 2004. I would recommend Disneyland Paris to anyone who wants to see the prettiest Disney park in the world.

Hi, thanks for the video. We are going to the same hotel in the next month. What was provided with the travel cot? Read somewhere that there is no mattress or blankets.
Hi Stuart, thanks for watching! There was definitely a mattress, we always take our own blankets for Madison when we head away :) Cheers, Mark.

Why GOLD . STOP IN A REAL HAVEN CARAVAN,..
do this almost every year definitely worth it
It was the best site I have stayed in, but I went cheapo without their facilities.
If that’s a new mobby who ever puts the decor together should go back to interior design college also the light switch should be beside the beds . It’s underwhelming, but your beside the sea out on the decking at night it’s a nice switch off and new friends bit of laugh and chill heating broad band en-suite TV’s in rooms every one is happy. Walk in wardrobe 😳👍❤️👍
Would you stay here again like guys?
Hi Andy, I'd like to try some other sites, like Haggerston Castle up toward Berwick. Thanks for watching too!
We were here too,3 weeks ago and loved it, stayed a week, lots to do,good food and swimming was excellent! Loved your caravan we had a bronze very basic but tidy n clean.. enjoyed watching, brought back memories of our break. Thanks guys 👍👌

Very informative video. I'll be here in 2 weeks and it was my biggest Dream since I was around 14-15 yrs old. Now I'm 28 and Dream come true, I got tickets, I got hotel, before I was 1 time in LA and San Diego like a year ago and now going to New York I think I will cry :D It was my BIGGGEST APPLE DREAM :) Thanks Mark, really nice video!!
Love it!!
Looks quite nice but not for me.Having to walk to the hub each time for food and drink would be so tiring. We prefer hotels on a half board basis.Always wondered what this place was like. Thankyou for the video.
Yeah totally agree Brian! Don't think we'd rush back, caravan was beautiful however. 100% agree on the hotel front! Thanks for watching too.
