In the final days of March 1964 -- These scenes take place in the turbulent days before a military coup d'etat that will overthrow the democratically elected left-leaning government. The Labor government is running afoul of large corporations and US economic and Cold War interests. The rightwing and the military organized public demonstrations entitled: Marches of the Family with God for Freedom. The military will call their coup the "Revolution of 1964" and will promise the people a better life. Few Brazilians will believe them. Some will fight them.
Characters:
Marina - Owner of O Journal - Rich and beautiful, she has the courage to stand to the dictatorship. The newspaper suffers the consequences of opposing torture.
Marcela - A lawyer who helps Marina and the staff of O Journal in the struggle against the dictatorship. She's a champion of the imprisoned and tortured.
Mario - Journalist and theatre director, Communist activist. He's been in love with Thiago's only daughter for years.
Thiago -- A seasoned journalist - though he's long-time married, the passion and stress of working at O Journal, leads him closer and closer to Marina.
In these scenes, the four discuss how the social turmoil is good for selling newspapers, but very dangerous for democracy. Marcela says there are only 70 men in the world who rule everything. The four question whether US economic interests could be driving and directing the rightwing unrest. A military officer calls in a bomb threat to O Jornal, threatening to blow up the building with everyone in it unless the newspaper stops publishing articles which upset the military. Everyone laughs off the threat, saying that Brazil is a free country and they must publish the truth. Mario heads to Rio with other activist students -- unsuspectingly heading right into the eye of the storm. Later the news begins to come in -- 7 deaths in a variety of incidents across the country -- all of activists and all at the hands of the military.
