Elizabeth really wanted to be this submissive wife to Richard. This is from the book Furious Love: “After the speech was given the cameras stopped rolling, Elizabeth looked around the crowded banquet set, then at Richard, who was ‘deeply moved’ by her delivery of Shakespeare's speech, telling her, ‘All right, my girl, I wish you'd put that into practice.’ Elizabeth responded, ‘I can't say it in words like that, but my heart is there.’”

Has anyone else noticed that Petruchio is a peanut butter and jelly boy? He's a drunk, with holes in his stockings who demands money of a woman he despises. Kate is no prize to be sure but this surely is no love story. It's comedy where we watch the Land of Misfit Toys.

I love the interpretation of this scene. Don Pedro is serious in his proposal (often it is played as a jest) and you can see the second when Beatrice realizes that she must let him down easy.

Katharina needed -- and got! -- someone who not only would not be intimidated by her but who was every bit as passionate and quick-witted as she is and who probably would have been bored silly with anyone who was not like her. They both needed someone who could keep them on their toes and keep up with them -- and I suspect that once they become better acquainted with each other, they loved each other every bit as fiercely and passionately as they initially fought with each other.

I haven't seen this movie, but it looks like they may have made it something different from what The Bard wrote. Kate is tamed, period. She succumbs to Petruchio's dominance and torture, and its absolutely awesome, too awesome for today.
